Submersible MIXER Theory/Applications
The objective of mixing is usually one or more of the following• Make the mixture homogeneous with regard, to for example,
concentration, consistency or temperature
• Facilitate a process requiring contact between different constituents, such as coagulation, flocculation or mass transfer
• Prevent sedimentation and loss of volume. This includes re-suspending solids off the bottom or surface, and mobilizing yield stress liquids.

The Bulk Flow concept
For flow controlled mixing duties, apply a BULK FLOW to engage all parts of the volume

The Bulk Flow Concept –
o Identify the bulk flow loop. The bulk flow loop is in most cases determined by the tank layout.
o Locate the mixers in the loop.o Allow a long jet path for large bulk flow. This often means
location in a corner of a tank.o Arrange for smooth flow deflection of low losses. This means
oblique jet incidence on solid boundaries.o Keep mixer discharges away from obstacles (pillars, pipes)

Aiming for the “quarter point” usually gives the best trade off between a long jet path and a smooth deflection and between suspension and blending

Mixer Performance –Thrust and The ISO 21630:2007 StandardInternational standard 2007:• Thrust F (N)• Electric Power P (kW)• R = F/P (N/Kw)Newton’s laws in turbulent flow:To maintain a velocity U against losses requires a (thrust) forceF is proportional to the square of the velocity
Well know in pump system design. Dynamic head and flow

Oxidation Ditch
• Perhaps one of the most popular BIOLOGICAL wastewater designs - but is full of complexity.
• As foot print becomes more expensive, and as effluent quality becomes more stringent, new ways of building these pose new and difficult challenges.
• Horizontal flow can has a beneficial effect of O2 transfer efficiency in a bottom diffused aeration system.
• BUT much less is know how intricate the art of mixing and aeration really is and how its best to evaluate as a system.
