Its purpose is to facilitate communication andcooperationbetweenmappingprofessionals,to minimizeduplicationof effort,todeUmninemappingprioritiesfor the Stateof New Jersey, to communicatethose prioritiesto the USGS, and to facilitatethe realizationofmappingpriorities in the state.

INTRODUCTION

As we have come to recognize the lasting environmental impacts of human activities, the need to documentandreview past land use patterns and practices has become critical. Environmental awareness and regulatoryrequirements necessitate that government agencies, housing development companies, industrial developers,engineers, and environmentalgroupshave historicalinformationat their fmgertips.One of the best ways to evaluatepriorlanduses is throughhistoricalaerialphotography.

While we have seen the use of aerial photos more than double in the past tea years, information on availabilityofphotos has remainedhardto fred. This directorywas proparedin conjunctionwith the New Jersey State MappingAdvisoryCommittee to fill a pressingneedfora complete listingof New Jerseyserialphotography.

The entries were compiled from questionnairessent to all aerial photo companies we know of operating in NewJersey and to Federal, State and County agencies likely to hold aerial photos. Inquirieson paflicularnegatives orphoto sets shouldbe directedto the sources indicatedin thelistings.

The directory is organized by geographic area and date of photography. While most of the information isself-explmmmry,the following points shouldbe noted:

1)The soaree (column3) w.fersto ;he"Sourcesof NewJelly AerialPhotography"listings (pages2 and3).

2) Scales are nominaland may be slightlydifferentthan listeddue to variationin alfitodeand pitchand roll"ofthe aircraft.

3) For fdm type,B/W standsforblackand white, Colorfor naturalcolor, andIRCfor infraredcolor.

4) In manycases the sourcehas photographyavailable for examinationonly or has an enlarged pn3dnctformakingbleeline copies. If original-sizeor custom copies areneeded, they would have to be preparedfromthe originalnegatives.

We realize that some photographymaynot have been includedand would appreciatenew or unintentionallyomittedphotographybeing broughtto ourattentionfor inclusion in futureeditions. Additionalphotographyis listed in thefederal Aerial Photography SummanyRecord System (APSRS), maintainedby the U. S. Geological Survey.
