GAME

Kent State Golden Flashes(8-5, 1-0)Head Coach: Todd Starkey (27-18, Second Season)

Kent State vs. NIU, Jan. 3, 2018 • Page 2NIU IN THE MACThe Huskies are 167-233 all time in the Mid-American Conference after suffering a 67-65 setback at Miami in the conference opener. NIU was 33-39 during their first stint in the league (1982-86) and are 134-194 since rejoining the conference in 1997. NIU is 16-20 in league play under head coach Lisa Carlsen. LAST TIME OUTThe Huskies suffered a 67-65 setback at Miami in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams at Millett Hall Saturday. With 15.7 seconds left in the game and the Huskies trailing, 65-62, Courtney Woods nailed her first three pointer of the game to tie the contest, 65-65. However, a Huskie foul on the shot put Lauren Dickerson to the line for a pair of free throws. The RedHawk guard hit both shots to give Miami a 67-65 lead with three seconds left in regulation. The Huskies’ full court inbounds pass was intercepted and Miami sealed the victory.

CARLSEN CLIMBINGLisa Carlsen enters her third season as head coach of the NIU Women’s Basketball team. She has a 40-35 record at NIU for a .533 winning percentage, surpassing Rita Horky (1981-83), who finished with a .525 winning percentage (31-28). With the win over Loyola, Carlsen surpassed Liz Galloway-McQuitter for sixth all-time at NIU in wins and has a career record of 224-198 in 15 seasons as a head coach. She is eight wins away from passing Alice Textor (1977-81) who tallied a 47-46 record.

SERIES HISTORYKent State leads the all-time series, 20-15, however, the Huskies have won the last two meetings, sweeping the season series in 2017. NIU is 9-6 versus the Golden Flashes at home and have won the last four meeting in the Convocation Center. The last Huskie loss at home came on Jan. 30, 2010 when NIU fell, 80-71. The Huskies’ longest winning streak in the series is four, from Jan. 28, 2012 to Jan. 17, 2015. Kent State won seven straight meetings from 1998-2003.

WHEN LAST WE META staunch defensive effort, hot second-half shooting and relentless rebounding helped push the Huskies to a 93-72 victory over Kent State at the Convocation Center on Jan. 25, 2017. Five players finished in double figures with Mikayla Voigt leading the way scoring 18 points. NIU hauled in a season-high 57 rebounds and held the Golden Flashes to 30 percent shooting from the field, while the Huskies 44.1 percent of their shots, including 47.4 percent in the second half. The Huskies also posted a 98-97 win at Kent State earlier in the season.

May and Courtney Woods each recorded a double-double against Western Illinois with Woods scoring 39 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while May tallied 10 points and 16 rebounds. Myia Starks recorded her first career double-double when she scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in NIU’s game against Albany. Kelly Smith accomplished the feat when she scored 23 points and grabbed 10 boards at Chicago State on Nov. 20.

PURSUING 1,000Mikayla Voigt is 120 points away from joining her teammates in the 1,000-career-point club with 880 career points following her four-point effort at Miami. She scored a career best 380 points last year. The Huskies have never had three players score their 1,000th career point in the same season. The last time more than one Huskie scored their 1,000th career point in the same season was 1993-94 when E.C. Hill and Angela Lockett accomplished the feat.

Hot second half shooting and relentless rebounding improved the NIU women’s basketball team to 14-5 overall and 7-1 in MAC play Wednesday night as the Huskies defeated Kent State, 93-72. The Golden Flashes (10-10, 4-4 MAC) were held to a 30 percent field goal percentage as NIU amassed a season-high 57 rebounds in the game as six players reached double figures and combined for 87 points. NIU built a 29-point lead in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter after a Mikayla Voigt three-point basket. Voigt led NIU with 18 points and was one of four Huskies to dish at least three assists as well. After Kent State led by as much as six with 3:50 left in the first, a 10-0 run by NIU that included six points on old fashioned three-point plays, overthrew Kent State’s lead and kept the Huskies on top at the end of the frame, 20-19. The NIU stymied Kent State in the second quarter, holding the Golden Flashes to 11 points in the period and 4-of-20 from the field, including a nine-percent three-point field goal percentage on 1-of-11 shooting. The Huskies scored 37 points in the third, making 14 of their 21 attempts from the field, including 10-straight baskets with 6:13 remaining to 56 seconds left in the quarter. After a pair of free throws by Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic), the Golden Flashes attempted to close the gap with NIU’s reserves on the floor but were unable to escape the 20-point deficit before the final horn sounded.

Head Coach Lisa Carlsen enters her third season in charge of the NIU women’s basketball program in 2017-18 and is coming off one of the program’s most successful seasons in over 20 years. With 14 seasons of coaching under her belt, Carlsen enters the season with an overall head coaching record of 224-198, including a 40-35 record at Northern Illinois University. Instilling a fast paced, style of play and working hard to engage the community, its fan base and alumnae, Carlsen has made an immediate impact on the program. After a first season that resulted in bumps and bruises from adopting a new style of play, the Huskies found their stride in Carlsen’s second season as they advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and made their first postseason berth since 1995 with an at-large bid to Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). NIU finished the 2016-17 season with a 21-12 record, and went 12-6 in the MAC after posting a respectable 7-4 mark in non-conference play. The Huskies won eight of their first nine conference games. Led by Ally Lehman, who was named First Team All-MAC and was second MAC Player of the Year voting, NIU would overcome double-digit deficits six times during the season and finish fifth in the NCAA in scoring at 85.1 points per game.In the team’s postseason run, the Huskies found themselves trailing defending MAC Champion Ohio by 22 points in the second quarter, NIU slowly chipped away at the Bobcats and completed the largest comeback in NCAA Postseason history to advance to its first MAC Tournament Semifinal since 2007.NIU broke several records during the course of the season as Courtney Woods became just the sixth player in MAC history to reach the century mark in made three-pointers (105) and Lehman set the program’s record for assists in a season (214) and in a career (538). With two triple-doubles during the season, she fell just 10 rebounds shy of becoming just the fourth player Division I basketball history to record 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a career. In her first season with the Huskies, Northern Illinois University overcame three double-digit deficits in a game and recorded victories, the most since the 2005-06 season, and four different players - all of which return in 2016-17 - averaged 10.0 or points per game, the first time since the 1989-90 season the program has achieved that feat.Northern Illinois University’s fast-paced offense scored 80-or-more points six times in Carlsen’s first season with a season-best 92 points against Miami (Ohio) at home. The team finished second in the Mid-American Conference in assists (14.7/G) and rebounds (41.4/G).Lehman, a Third Team All-MAC pick, was a large factor for the Huskies distribution and boarding production as she finished first in the conference in rebounds (11.0/G) and fifth in assists (4.5/G).Carlsen, a highly-decorated head coach who spent eight seasons at Lewis University, was introduced as Northern Illinois University’s 10th women’s basketball head coach by NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier on June 30, 2015In eight seasons at Lewis, Carlsen guided the Flyers to a 148-89 record, four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and two Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) championships. In 2014-15, Lewis posted a 31-3 record and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament; Carlsen was honored as the 2015 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II National Coach of the Year. The Flyers started the season on a 23-game winning streak and spent five weeks ranked number one in the nation. Along with earning national coach of the year honors, Carlsen was also named GLVC Coach of the Year, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Women’s Collegiate Coach of the Year and WBCA Region IV Division II Coach of the Year.A 1992 graduate of Northwest Missouri State, Carlsen was a four-time all-conference basketball honoree while also earning all-conference and all-region honors as a softball player. During her senior year, Carlsen was named the 1992 Champion NCAA Female Athlete of the Year. She went on to earn her master’s degree from Nebraska Omaha in 1994 and played basketball professionally for the Nebraska Express of the Women’s Basketball Association from 1992-95 and was named an all-star in 1995. Carlsen and her husband, Chris, have four children; sons Jacob (20), Zachary (17) and Sam (16) and daughter Lexi (12).

A pair of Huskies reached career milestones as the Northern Illinois University Women’s Basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat Loyola, 80-71, at the Convocation Center on Education Day Wednesday afternoon.Junior Courtney Woods and senior Kelly Smith became the 23rd and 24th Huskies to reach the 1,000-point mark for their career and the first NIU (6-2) teammates to accomplish the feat in the same game as the Huskie duo scored 22 and 18 points, respectively, against Loyola (1-7). In addition to Woods and Smith, Myia Starks and Mikayla Voigt also finished in double figures. A 10-point second quarter propelled Starks to a career-high 16 points, while Voigt, who was shutout in the first half, finished with 15 points after scoring eight points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth.NIU was dominant in the paint, outscoring the Ramblers 42-14 and outrebounding them 43-30. Ally May led the way with 10 rebounds, while Woods and Smith each missed a double-double, tallying nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Loyola outshot NIU, 45.0-42.4 percent, thanks in large part to some hot shooting in the second half. The Ramblers shot 48.1 percent from the floor in the half, including 50 percent from three-point territory. The Huskies’ win over Loyola was their fifth win over a team from the Land of Lincoln this season and Carlsen’s 11th in her last 12 since taking over at NIU.
