INTERVIEW

Cut CapersCut Capers are an eight-piece band that formed in Bristol in late 2011 with a style based in hip-hop, swing, ska and roots reggae. They have burst onto the UK circuit, particularly in the last two years, playing gigs and festivals up and down the country including Boomtown, Shambala and Secret Garden Party. They’re also regulars on the Bristol gig scene, so there’s no good excuse not to catch them on their ascent, as the lively group look headed for similar success as popular live-hip-hop-with-brass acts like The Mouse Outfit and Lazy Habits.

Cut Capers’ high energy shows combine tight grooves and a big sound, featuring a dynamic 3-piece brass section. Described as a ‘great party band’ (Boomtown), Cut Capers bring the party to crowds all over who are looking to jump up and down in a frenzy to a fresh new sound, which channels elements of all the great ska, swing and hip-hop.

How would you describe your musical style? “Kind of ska / hip hop.”

“Ska / hip hop / swing?”

“Bits of everything. A bit of Latin...”

“We try and throw in all the styles of music we like, I suppose. It’s quite an eclectic set. We try and blend it together as well so it make sense, but generally I’d say hip hop/ ska.”

“Anything with energy that we like, we’ll steal!”

I suppose you don’t fit into any genre too easily. How do you guys fit into the Bristol music scene?

“The horn section works really well here. Bristol has that sort of brass scene; that kind of Bristol sound for bands with a brass section, like Babyhead, First Degree Burns... ”

“We grew up listening to those bands years ago and there’s loads of new bands around now like Mad Apple Circus. We try and go as many live shows in Bristol as we can and we just learn something from every set we go to and then try and do our own take on everything.

Who and what do you draw your inspiration from?“Lazy Habits - we’re big fans of theirs.”

“Cat Empire. Anything kind of groove based with brassy hooks is pretty much what we like!”

“Cat Empire are a really big influence in the way they write songs. And when you see them live they’re really energetic.”

“They manage to melt so many elements together, they make it seem like pure music; just fundamental music.”

“And also we’re into the bands we’ve watched come from years ago, like Lazy Habits started out as quite a small band and they’ve got tighter and added more horns. Same with Mouse Outfit. It’s quite nice to watch other bands doing the same things as us, so we can learn from people like that as well.”

“Also old guys like Benny Goodman.”

“Yeah, jazzers from back in the day!”

Do you only play originals during your live shows, or do you covers as well?

“It’s mostly originals and then we throw in sections that are covers. Like now we were just saying about Benny Goodman, we’ve got our main song ‘Pinstripe Tux’ and we play through it, but then we add a section that’s a Benny Goodman cover, ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’. Or we tag Roots Manuva covers on at the end of songs. Well, not so much just covers - we try and make it different.”

“We do a couple of covers, but it’s definitely our own take on it. ”

There are 8 of you all together, how do you manage to write and perform as such a large group?

“We don’t! I think we write as a small group, usually a select few of us. It’ll be either Nick or Mark will come up with a riff or some lyrics and they’ll come to rehearsals with an idea and then we’ll go from there with it. Or they’ll go over to Eloy’s and record some stuff and do it all on the computer first and send it to all of us and we’ll learn bits.”

“The best ones we’ve done have been where we do that and then figure out the rest as a group. So, put the finishing touches on and get it sounding like a whole thing with everyone there, with everyone suggesting various bits.”

“It varies really, sometimes people will come to practice with ideas and other times we’ll come up with stuff while we’re there. I think it’s always useful to go to practice with an idea, but it’s also good to just jam stuff out while we’re there.”

“The longer we’ve been together as an 8-piece, the more it’s been writing together as a group. Like, ‘Say What’, one of our most recent songs, that was all of us together and that’s one of our favourites, so we were really pleased with how that worked out.”

“Yeah, it sounds like that as well. It comes across that we all wrote it together as a group and I think that’s why we’re all so happy with it. Hopefully, more and more that will be the case.”

How often do you manage to get together and practice?“Once a week...” (Cut Capers laugh)

“Over the summer it’s been pretty hard because when you’re gigging at festivals and stuff, you want a bit of a rest in the week. So we try for once a week, but obviously if you’re gigging three times in one week, then you can kind of get away with just doing the gigs. But then in the winter we try and do almost twice a week and if we’re recording, more.”

You’ve played a tonne of big festivals this summer including Secret Garden Party, Boomtown and Shambala, and last month you supported legend Jimmy Cliff at the O2 Academy. What’s been your career highlight?

“Being asked to support Jimmy would definitely be one of them!”

“I think all of us really loved Tiverton Balloon Fiesta. That was a really stand-out gig. We played there last year and they really enjoyed our set, so they got us back this year to headline the Saturday. And it was just really busy and everyone really loved it.”

“When we got Boomtown last year I had a real mental high about that. All my friends were buying tickets and I was like, “yep, we’re playing”. That was a big thing for me.”

“I would agree with the Tiverton thing though, as far as playing, that was our first taste of several thousand people and we’re the headline band. It was wicked.”

You’ve been described as a ‘great party band’ (Boomtown) and your live performances are full of energy - what is it about you guys that gets everybody in the crowd so hyped up?”

““We have loads of fun, basically. I’ve been to see live bands before and I don’t like it when they don’t look like they’re having fun. You’ve got to enjoy it or the crowd won’t enjoy it. We enjoy it so much that the crowd get that and join in with it.”

“And loads of crowd banter.”

“We all jump up and down - the whole time!”

“I think we learn as we go as well. We had our set a year ago, or whatever, and we watch the bits people enjoy or go down well, or what we enjoy most on stage that gets everybody else going. We’re not afraid to drop stuff and move on and that definitely helps. It’s a constantly evolving set. ”

“Yeah, we won’t keep a tune just because we might like it. If it bombs on a set then we’ve got to get rid of it.”

You released new track ‘Say What’ earlier this year. It’s taken a bit of a swingier direction than your previous tracks, why is that?

“We just like swing. It’s another element that we all like so we thought, try it out.”

“I think electro swing has been getting bigger and bigger, and I think Caravan Palace has always been a bit of an influence of ours. So we thought we’d see if we could do a tune like that kind of ilk.

“And we’ve always loved Benny Goodman and Django Reinhardt, that kind of Parisian jazz.”

“One of our first songs, Pinstripe Tux, that’s actually a bit swingy; it’s like swing/ ska. And that’s one of our favourites so we wanted to do another one in that style with more singing.”

So is it a new direction you’re taking or a one-off?“Good question. We don’t know...”

“We just kind of write songs and they sound different. We’re not ever taking a direction as such, we just wanted a snappy hook and we liked the way it sounded when we came up with it in practice and then we just came out with it.

“We want to keep it quite broad and still incorporate lots of different things.”

“I don’t think we ever want to be one genre. Ever.”

“We want it to sound like us, but with what we’re enjoying vat that moment brought into the mix.”

We’ve heard rumours of a new EP in the works... Can you give us a bit more info?

“We’ve released a couple of tracks off it already (‘Lighter’ and ‘Walk Away’), so there’s a couple more tracks to release but we’re going to do them all as singles and then release the EP for download at the end of it.”

“We’re recording videos for each tune as well. Then we’ll re-release everything together.”

ORGAN3MANAs an unusually dynamic instrumental organ funk trio, Organ3man have redefined the boundaries of imagination with their first two albums. This is largely because the recordings don't exist. Now touring material from 'DEA' and 'Organ3man got the blues', the band are a combination of influences from the financial fluidity of post depression Detroit, to the creative grounding of Sunra and the Solar Arkestra.


MAT SIBLEY QUARTETMSQ are a Bristol based band with sax/guitar frontline featuring Mat on sax and Andy Christie on guitar. Expect some jazzy tunes with a funky vibe by the likes of Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny,Herbie Hancock and more.


LOST 11Lost Eleven are a five-piece band playing Electric Country Blues. Their entertaining set comprises a varied mix of well-known and not so well-known melodies - lively rhythms and catchy lyrics are despatched with three-part harmony vocals and driven along with slide-guitar and banjo. A back-line of bass, drums and keyboards completes the line-up. Familiarly different.


THE BAD HANDSThe Bad Hands know that funk fusion should get feet tapping, heads bobbing and with a healthy dose of virtuosity to top it off! With an eclectic mix spanning Stevie Wonder, Jeff Beck, John Scofield and Herbie Hancock these guys can certainly throw it down! The group comprises celebrated UK guitarists Stuart Ryan and Jason Sidwell, Bristol drum legend Marco Anderson and bass maestro Martin Dupras.
