Rev D1 and G Current Status

Rev D1: SBS CDet • >2k ch = 185 cards requested • First 28 @JLab to instrument 1st module (June 2016) • Jan 2017 further 160 cards produced to complete instrumentation (8 spare)

• 160 testing in Glasgow on-going • 84 good, 20 of which delivered to JLab (April 2017) • 30 awaiting re-test/fix (NINO fine):

• most require replacing faulty capacitor on LV supply line • some high-freq noise check (power cycling/flat ribbon connect both outputs)

• Aiming to complete testing/repairs by end April 2018 (testing will end in couple weeks) • Currently ready to ship another CDet batch when required (64 ready)

Rev G: BB GRINCH (35 cards); Hodoscope (12 cards) • Require MCX/RG179 custom input cables

• 35 cards and 560 cables @JLab for GRINCH, currently instrumenting prototype

• Most hodoscope cards faulty (4 good, 11 bad - mostly input connector issue, would require re-seating at company Zot)

• Upcoming production will replace faulty cards (faster) • 200 x 1.5m length co-ax cables @JLab • Expect procurement and complete testing of new hodoscope cards by Summer 2018

• Procured all components for production of 210 more cards • 150 x Rev D1; 60 x Rev G

• Will provide spares for detectors currently using cards • Rev G for BB hodoscope faulty card replacement • Cards available for other detectors if needed

• Production outsourced to Zot • Components currently being sent to Zot - production starting soon • Production time quoted 6 - 8 weeks (in past more like 2 - 3 wks) • Expect delivery Glasgow end April 2018 (latest), expect complete testing by end winter

NINO Summary

• 64 cards immediately ready to ship for CDet when required • Soon production of a further 210 cards will begin (150 Rev D1, 60 Rev G)

• Expect production complete by end April 2018 latest • NINO cards for BB hodoscope can be tested by end May 2018 • These will act as spares/replacements for current detectors and be

available for any other detectors wishing to use NINO FE cards

• High precision timing info for 2-arm (e,e’N) measurements • (pulse height (NINO ToT) information; high efficiency for MIP

over BB momenta range; hit position information may assist high occupancy tracking)

• Set-up: • 90 vertically stacked scintillator bars • Light guides at each end, alternating straight/curved • Single channel PMT readout at each end (x180) • Custom designed PMT bases and NINO readout

• Original assembly modified for new shorter PMT • After July 2017, returned collars to Glasgow to re-bore for

wider bases • 200 collars now machined

• Procured set screws for fixing PMT base in collar • Plan to fix collar in Al case using fast set epoxy • Looking at possibility of springs to fix Al case to light-guide

Light-Tightness: • Heat shrink and o-rings for added light-tightness • Huge leaks in base/PMT glass bottom, filling base with

Low and High Voltage Supplies, Distribution and Cables

• HV and LV distribution panels should be as close to hodoscope as possible • HV and NINO LV distribution panels - design and construction is needed (2nd half) 2018

• Agilent high-current PSU for NINO LV available from Glasgow • 1 more LV supply (low current, ~20mA) for NINO external threshold needed (2nd half) 2018

• HV: CAEN SY1527LC mainframe, 4 x A1932A 48-channel HV distributers w/ individual channel control (1x SY1527LC; 8x A1932A available from Glasgow)

• HV output on 52-pin connector - an option could be multiway HV cable, with Cu braiding - design and construction of HV cable is needed

• Connect multiway cables to a distributer panel; individual HV cables to PMTs needed • For HV cables urgently need to find connectors to match PMT bases (originally came from

JLAB from BaBar DIRC PMTs). They are not in Glasgow. • All HV and LV distributer panels, cabling, connectors, and final HV cable lengths will need

design and construction asap (2nd half) 2018

NINO Signals

• NINO cards must be situated as close to hodoscope as possible • 200 co-ax signal cables for PMT to NINO are currently @JLab, 1.5m length

• Space is required on BB frame for 12 NINO cards • (Area NINO card 76mm x 122mm, with minimal thickness ~30mm for each card

with cables attached)

• Expect ~60m cables from NINO to readout should be long enough • Use an existing LVDS to ECL converter from JLab for NINO digital signals

• Enough flat ribbon available in Glasgow for LVDS signals • Cables/connectors can be made in Glasgow

Proposed Roadmap of Tasks - Hardware

Immediate timeline for assembly: • March 2018 ship components to JLab • Spring/summer 2018, install 90 bars, 180 PMT assemblies in BB

Proposed Roadmap of Tasks - Software

Required for commissioning: • In-house help from JLab required to set up slow control (EPICS) of LV and HV, via

ethernet connection, and CODA DAQ for readout (2nd half 2018)

Initial Software: • Towards end 2018, after installations, cabling and DAQ set up, main task is to develop a

basic display for online running • Had something similar to this during prototyping in Glasgow • This will include analysis and display of e.g.:

• For calibration runs: QDC spectra and ToT calibration and time-walk correction • For data runs: channel TDC spectra, channel ToT distributions, bar mean times, bar

time differences

Scripts for further analysis required before running includes (develop in 2019): • Hodoscope hit position reconstruction • Scripts to analyse correlation of hodoscope to other detectors • Analysis for mean time corrected for flight-path length and beam bunch correlation

Hodoscope Summary

Post-Production Tests

• Production outsourced to Zot company • Cards received from Zot tested in Glasgow before shipping to JLab

• Test procedure repeated for every card; logging: - current (NINO & threshold circuit supplies); noise; LVDS height/widths;
