VISION STATEMENT St. Raymond Parish is a family. As disciples of Jesus, we are “children of God” and “brothers and sisters in Christ.” Jesus himself says, “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother” (Matthew 12:50). We welcome all to belong to our Catholic family and to inherit with us in Christ the mission to preach the Gospel!

MISSION STATEMENT St. Raymond Parish is a community united by our Catholic Faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. We seek communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through ongoing personal and communal conversion to Christ and a deeper commitment to the mission Jesus gives each of us to preach the Gospel. The sacred scriptures and sacraments of the Church sustain us. We dedicate ourselves to Truth and strive to grow in love of God and neighbor through community, prayer, study, and service, as we work by grace to build up in one another and share freely with others the abundance of magnificent gifts God has given.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

One of our very important ministries here at St. Raymond, our Religious Education program, is gearing up for the Fall and is looking for confirmed adults and high school students to help teach religious education during the coming year (late August-early May). Religious education teachers should be members of the parish, have a love of the Catholic faith, and enjoy being with and teaching children. Volunteer teachers are needed as catechists (teachers), catechist aides, and for sacramental preparation; training and support will be provided. All volunteers must be cleared through the safe environment program of the San Francisco Archdiocese. If you feel called to this ministry/are interested, please contact Amy Jobin at [email protected] or at the parish office at 650-323-1755. Thank you in advance for considering!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR NEEDED

St. Raymond is looking for someone to join its team as the Religious Education Coordinator. If you have a passion for the Catholic faith and enjoy working with children, please consider applying! We would love to have someone from the parish join our team and be a part of this important ministry. Some of the duties of this position will include: keeping track of registrations (online), planning the year-long calendar, weekly communications with parents/families, planning for and getting supplies to catechists for their classes, being present on Sunday mornings when RE is in session, coordinating First Communion, and working cooperatively with the rest St. Raymond’s staff. This is a part-time paid position (approx. 20 hours/week) and weekend work is involved, primarily on Sunday mornings. If you are interested, please send your resume and an email to Amy at: [email protected].

Artificial Intelligence has become so powerful and sophisticated that some now claim it is on par with human beings. Some even anticipate computers will become self-conscious and demand human rights. How are we to evaluate such claims? How can we even begin to think about such matters? Are there any criteria or principles and concepts that we can use? This talk will develop arguments that show we have no reason to assume that computers will become conscious or people like us.

Fr. Anselm Ramelow, O.P., is a Dominican priest and a member of the Western Dominican Province. AUGUST 17—ST. HYACINTH OF POLAND The life of this 13th century “Apostle of the North,” known for his zeal for souls, makes him a great patron for our modern times, so much in need of young hearts fearlessly leaving all to proclaim the Gospel. Zeal such as that of St. Hyacinth is the driving force of the Order of Preachers.

If we consider the Greek etymology of the word “enthusiasm,” which means “to be full of God,” Hyacinth comes across as a figure unconditional in

his enthusiasm for preaching the Good News. Born of noble parents in Poland around 1185, he was educated in Cracow. On a trip to Rome in 1218, he met St. Dominic, from whom both Hyacinth and his cousin, Ceslaus, received the habit of the Friars Preachers. Within a few months of his reception of the habit, Hyacinth embarked on his first mission, sent by St. Dominic to preach and establish the Order in Poland.

For the next 35 years, he devoted himself to preaching the Gospel,

encouraging his followers to nurture the practice of study, and opening new Dominican monasteries. He was tireless in his efforts, soon establishing Dominican Friaries in all the major cities in Poland. These houses became known as centers of theological thought and missionary activity. He extended his missionary activity through Russia, Lithuania, present day Czech Republic and Slovakia, Austria, Bohemia, Greece, Turkey, and northern China. After crossing the Baltic Sea, he preached in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

After unceasing labors and vast journeys, Hyacinth spent his last few months of life in a monastery he had founded in Cracow. Although worn out and weakened by illness and fever, he kept watch in the service of God until his death by celebrating Mass on the Feast of the Assumption. He was anointed at the foot of the altar on August 15, 1257 and died the same day. Canonized over 300 years later, he was the seventh Dominican to be raised to sainthood.

Fight Medication Abortions at UC and CSU Campuses

California Senate Bill 24 mandates that the health centers at all state colleges and universities in California must provide "abortion by medication techniques." As SB 24 states, "All California public university campuses have on-campus student health centers, but none of these health centers currently provide abortion by medication techniques."

Archbishop Cordileone urges Californians to contact their lawmakers to express their opposition to SB 24. Time is short. The bill has passed the state Senate, has been approved by all state Assembly committees, and awaits a floor vote when the State Legislature, currently in recess, reconvenes on Monday, August 12.

For complete information on SB 24, the Novena, the California bishops' statewide initiative to defeat the bill, and more, visit the Archdiocese of San Francisco website at sfarch.org/stop-sb-24.

Contact your legislator at bit.ly/stopSB24.

USHERS A lead usher is needed for the Saturday 5:15 pm Mass. We also need additional lead ushers for all of our other Masses (to give the regular lead ushers a break once in a while). Duties include organizing people to take up the collection, bring the collection bag into the safe, find people to bring up the gifts, and manage the passing of bulletins and flyers.

If you’re interested, please contact John Sanchez at [email protected] or just find him in the church on Sunday.

IMMIGRATION RESCOURCES

Catholic Charities stands in solidarity with immigrants during these alarming and challenging times and will continue to pray for their safety, provide them with assistance, advocate for their rights, and treat them with compassion, respect, and dignity.

Immigrants have fundamental constitutional rights regardless of their status and are guaranteed due process and equal protection. Catholic Charities has compiled the below vital resources that may help keep our vulnerable immigrant neighbors safe during anticipated upcoming ICE raids. Please share these resources with all who may need them.

Know Your Rights: A Guide to Your Rights When Interacting with Law Enforcement

The information below and the guide was provided by Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. established by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

YOU HAVE RIGHTS regardless of your immigration status. You may be at risk of being deported if you are undocumented, if you are a non-citizen with a criminal history, if you are on parole, or have a prior deportation order. To protect yourself, your family, and your community you must KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. Knowledge is power. Act NOW. Do not wait. Be prepared.
