From Father Rodney
The Rock Group, Queen, recorded the song “I want it
all” in 1989. I remember that particular song because I
was CIT (counselor-in-training) at Camp Cachalot which
is a Boy Scout Camp located in Carver, Massachusetts
when the song was released and it was the “song of the
summer” for the camp staff. The lyrics note: “I want it
all, I want it all, I want it all and I want it now!” My guess
is that is became the staff song because well, the campers
were going to do what we wanted them to do and do it
now! The lyrics written so many years ago, are
oftentimes the mantra of our daily living. We want things
right away. We have no time nor tolerance to wait for
anything. It has to be done right away and we want it
done according to our specifications.
The first reading for this 19th
Sunday of Ordinary Time
presents us with a challenge: finding the voice of God in
our lives. How often do we find ourselves saying prayers
and waiting for the response yet it doesn’t come. We
give up and turn away from God. God always listens to
prayers...unfortunately for us, He answers and makes his
presence known in His own time and manner. Elijah has
been promised by God that He will reveal His presence to
Him. He gives Elijah very specific instructions as to how
he will need to prepare himself to experience Who God
is. First there is that strong wind, but God is not in the
wind. Then, there was an earthquake, but God wasn’t
there either. We then hear that there was fire but alas
God was not there either. “Finally, God makes his
presence known. After the fire there was a tiny
whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face
in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the
cave.” (1Kings 19:12-13)
Oftentimes, we expect to find the glory of God in large
ways. We want it all and we want it now. I think that it is
safe to assume that as we have been forced to have our
lives unexpectedly uprooted due to the current pandemic,
we have realized that we can’t always have it all nor can
we have it right now. There are so many things that we
had planned to do and in the blink of an eye those plans
were dashed and we have been forced – not easily -to
accept what has come our way. This is so true even in
our relationship with God. Unfortunately for us, God
usually acts in quiet ways, teaching us that we need to
really listen so that we can hear what he has to say.
Perhaps as the dog days of summer pass, we can each
find a little bit of time to rest from our labors so that we
can be attentive to listening to the Word of God so that
He can reassure us that He truly is living, moving and
acting in our lives.

Parents/Guardian of second and ninth grade Catholic
School students: Preparation for First Reconciliation, First
Eucharist, and Confirmation is a two-year process that is
distinct and separate from any catechetical program in
the parish or Catholic school. Sacraments are parish
celebrations and while Catholic school communities are
important in the daily sharing of faith and values, it is also
necessary for young people to stay connected to their
parish communities through the celebration of Sunday
Eucharist and attendance in the Faith Formation classes.
Therefore, if you have a son/daughter attending Catholic
School in 2 nd
and 9 th
grade, please contact the Faith
Formation office at [email protected] to enroll your
child in the program.
Please note: Mrs. Corvese will be out of the office
for the week of August 9 -14.
Messages and emails will be returned the week of
August 17.

Readings for August 8 and 9
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading
A Reading from first Book of Kings
At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave
where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go
outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the
LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was
rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the
LORD—but the LORD was not in the wind. After the
wind there was an earthquake—but the LORD was not in
the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire—but
the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a
tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his
face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of
the cave.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
I will hear what God proclaims;
the LORD — for he proclaims peace.
Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,
glory dwelling in our land.
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
Kindness and truth shall meet;
justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
The LORD himself will give his benefits;
our land shall yield its increase.
Justice shall walk before him,
and prepare the way of his steps.
R. Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
Second Reading
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans
Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not
lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing
me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish
in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed
and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people,
my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites;
theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving
of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the
patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the
Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gospel
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
Glory to you, O Lord.
After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get
into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he
dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the
mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was
there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles
offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the
wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night,
he came toward them walking on the sea. When the
disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified.
“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At
once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not
be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you,
command me to come to you on the water.” He said,
“Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on
the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the
wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink,
he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus
stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him,
“O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got
into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in
the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son
of God.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
