Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven.

    — Psalm 85:12

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The L said to Elijah: “Stand on the mountain; the L will be passing by” (1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a). Psalm — Lord, let us see your kind-ness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading — To the Israelites belong the covenants, the law, and the patriarchs; and from them comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5). Gospel — As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples were terrified (Matthew 14:22-33). SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942) “Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ condemnation of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic con-verts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-practicing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one sitting, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Baptized on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ initiation into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmel-ites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecution of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifes-tation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believ-er is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Oth-ers seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Two Steps Forward . . . Why did Jesus walk on water to the disciples in the boat? Did he want to scare them? No, his first words to them were

“Do not be afraid.” While they were being tossed by wind and waves, he showed them that he was not affected by the storm. If they had had faith, they might have realized that if Jesus was safe, they would be, too. We too must make that leap of faith, espe-cially when we are afraid.

Our growth in faith is not a steady progression. For every two steps forward, we may take one step back. For example, we become ill or wreck the car, and think that God has abandoned us. But isn’t that a natural reaction?

It is natural to doubt God in times of trouble, but we are choosing to live in the supernatural when we become followers of Christ. Like Peter, we can lose our focus on the Lord. We see someone we love who is gravely sick. We make a serious mistake that gets us in trouble. Faith tells us that though apparently invisible, God is more real than anything we can see. Remember Jesus on the cross saying, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The Father never abandoned his Son and God will never abandon us. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD’S IMAGE Nature has perfections in order to show that she is the image of God, and defects

to show that she is only God’s image. —Blaise Pascal

Thank you for your continued support

This weekend, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support for the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious for-mation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more about how your gifts make a difference, visit www.usccb.org/latin-america. To donate online, visit www.scd.org/cla2020.

Our next Parent Support will be on August 17th at 8pm on YouTube. The topic for August will be an introduction to Theolo-gy of the Body by our guest speaker Andreya Arévalo from St. Mary Catholic Church in Vacaville, CA. If you have ever been asked to send your child to a Theology of the Body retreat or talk, and want to be able to talk to your child after they attend, then this is the evening for you. For more information go to https://www.scd.org/parentsupport

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Min-istry (OYYA) seeks to recruit, train, empower, and support ministry leaders to minister effectively to youth (in junior high and high school) and young adults (age 18 to 39) by accompanying others, forming servant leaders, fostering authentic Christian community, and proclaiming the beauty of the Gospel in a relevant way. And now you can find us on Facebook and Instagram @SCDOYYA!
