1, 2, 3 - After a year of planning and fundraising, we started work on the Rosedale Runoff Reduction Project in 2015 in eastern Homewood, East Hills, and southern Penn Hills. The RRRP is designed to reduce the amount of sewage polluted stormwater entering Nine Mile Run from a combined sewer overflow every time it rains, with a variety of sustainable stormwater management interventions.

Our StormWorks crew, working in partnership with Operation Better Block’s Junior Green Corps, began installing rain barrels and rain gardens for homes whose runoff contributes to the problem. Planning continued for the stormwater management tree pits, and larger green infrastructure sites managing streetside runoff that will be installed in 2016 to complete Phase 1.

Learn more about the RRRP, including funders and partners, and stay up to date with its progress at the website, www.rosedalerain.com. If you have any questions about the project or would like to participate, contact Director of Policy and Outreach Mike Hiller (pictured right) at [email protected] or (412) 371-8779 ext. 121.

4 - Stewardship and continued enhancement of the Nine Mile Run Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration in Frick Park will always be central to our mission. In 2015, NMRWA conducted 7 Stream Sweeps with 380 volunteers removing 151 bags of trash from the stream! We also worked with partners to hold 4 litter clean up events in our upper watershed communities. At these events, over 250 volunteers gathered 96 bags of litter that would otherwise have washed into Nine Mile Run, along with 45 tires.

6 - NMRWA’s Urban EcoStewards continued their work in the Nine Mile Run restoration area, removing invasive plant species, picking up litter, and combating erosion. They also had the opportunity to attend various monthly workshops and trainings offered by the Urban EcoStewards program. Two of these were hosted by NMRWA: Stream Flow Monitoring, and Invasive Plant Identification & Removal Techniques.

7 - We continue to see urban forest improvements as central to restoring the ecosystem in our urban watershed. During 2015, we surpassed our proposed tree planting goal and doubled our tree care goal. Approximately 100 volunteers helped staff complete 8 tree plantings, resulting in 55 trees planted in the upper watershed communities of Wilkinsburg, Swissvale and Edgewood. During the same time window, 154 volunteers helped staff to complete 11 tree care events, resulting in 334 trees tended.

5 - NMRWA held 7 interpretive walks, engaging 154 people, and staff made 3 presentations to community groups and students. In addition, we reached more than 4,800 homes twice during the year with our printed newsletter, about 3,000 individuals with our monthly e-newsletter, and thousands more watershed supporters through our social media campaigns. 5

7

8 - In 2015, we implemented an expanded protocol for monitoring of water quality and habitat in the restoration area, and made our first forays into monitoring of green stormwater infrastructure in the upper watershed.

Civil and Environmental Consultants donated a highly technical longitudinal survey that will help us track future structural changes in the stream.

Watch for the release of our first Report Card on the state of the stream in 2016, based on the data we have been collecting since 2006!7

NMRWA’s financial goals are closely aligned with its strategic goals, as well as pursuing opportunities for on-going organizational sustainability. Income for the organization is generated in large part from the generous contributions of the local foundation community, as well as significant support from individual members, and from the Board of Directors. Additionally, NMRWA earns income from its StormWorks program as well as reimbursements and consulting fees from partners. These sources of income continue to grow on a total dollar basis from year to year.

From 2013 to 2015, between $0.84 to $0.87 of each dollar raised was spent directly on programming, including education, outreach, and advocacy activities, tree planting and maintenance, and monitoring and stewardship activities in the Nine Mile Run restoration area in Frick Park. 2015 saw the initiation of Phase 1 of the Rosedale Runoff Reduction Project, designed to reduce excess stormwater and bacterial pollution in the stream; this project includes some large capital investments in green stormwater infrastructure. Additionally, a sizable investment was made to design a new rain barrel, “The Hydra” in support of both the Rosedale Project and StormWork’s regional activities. Finally, the organization commits resources to on-going fundraising and administrative activities in support of its dedicated staff and volunteers.

Connect with us! A rain barrel fit for PittsburghBuilding on Nine Mile Run’s many years of experience during the Rain Barrel Initiative, StormWorks has now been providing rain barrels for five years, field testing new designs and experimenting with accessories to create a product that homeowners want and will use. This process revealed the need for an affordable rain collection system designed to fit the flat surfaces and tight spaces of many Pittsburgh homes, versus a large cylindrical shape, leading to the introduction of the Hydra in 2015. With a slim, modern design that can fit in narrow spaces between houses, shared walkways, or behind shrubbery, it’s

ideal for a city setting. Currently made from 100% recycled plastic resin, the Hydra will soon be available in several colors, made from virgin resin.

We are currently installing 200 Hydras through the Rosedale Runoff Reduction Project (see page 2). Previously, 400 were provided in the East End as part of Project 15206. Outside of Pittsburgh, we have partnered with the District Department of the Environment in Washington, D.C. to provide the Hydra in support of their rain barrel/cistern program and will ship a total of 350 Hydras to the D.C. area this year. See page 4 for more information on Stormworks’ efforts.
