THANK YOU Parents and carers, students and staff all share responsibility for ensuring that Nilma Primary school is a positive, respectful and safe school environment. Adults have a particular responsibility to be mindful of the way in which we conduct ourselves in and around the school, noting that we are the role models that impressionable students look to. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who contribute to the positivity of our school community each and every week. Though I cannot thank each of you individually, I wish to assure you that your efforts do not go unnoticed. At the sports day recently it was so great to see the parents and staff working together coordinating the West Gippsland Small school sports and the Canteen. This was a very rewarding and positive experience for all. Thanks to Belinda Smythe, Katrina Foster and Linda Paska-Simon, along with all the parent helpers, for coordinating the canteen and the Nilma Staff for coordinating the overall event. This is also an opportune time for me to emphasise that my door is always open to discuss any concerns you may have, simply contact the Office to schedule an appointment or drop in and see if I am available. Nilma Primary school prides itself on our ability to work with students and encouraging them to voice concerns as they arise so we can deal with challenges directly, address situations and then move forward to build resilience and student voice. This is also similar with the parent body too. There is an appropriate avenue to raise any grievances, concerns or constructive criticism. It uplifts me when I feel parents feel part of building our positive school culture. As part of our 3 year cycle of reviewing our policies we currently have our School Code of Conduct being reviewed. This policy is now called the ‘Statement of Values’ which supports the promotion of healthy and respectful school communities, which is inclusive and transparent. The school council will be adopting this policy at next school council meeting early term 2. Parents feel free to direct any feedback to myself or school councillors. I want to express my sincere appreciation for the cooperation and effort put forth by the parents, staff and students of Nilma in continuing with building our great school spirit!
WGRSSA DIVISION ATHLETICS - TOMORROW! Students in Years 4-6 will participate in the WGRSSA Division Athletics tomorrow—29th March—at the Geoff Watt Track against other students from the WGRSSA cluster. Students are to be dropped at the Geoff Watt Track at 8.45am and collected by 3.15pm. More information on page 6.
NILMA PRIMARY SCHOOL FACEBOOK (OFFICIAL) CLOSED GROUP Our new Official Nilma Primary School Facebook group has been established. Thanks to all the families who have returned the Facebook Code of Conduct and permission forms. The intent of the page is to grow our schools and communities understanding of social media to make connecting with our school more convenient. We wish for our content to be more accessible and to support a platform where the community can come together to build upon connections and school culture. We ask that our community accentuates the positives and bring everyone’s attention to the little things that make our school community great! AFTERSCHOOL CARE – EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Thank you for all the feedback. In the coming week we will be sending out final information for enrolment in the program. It is envisaged that to establish the program sessions will be approximately $25. PLEASE NOTE: Check with Centrelink Child Care subsidy for your family. For example if you earn approximately under $67000 per year your family would only pay approx. $3.75 per hour. Please check out https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/child-care-subsidy to determine how much your family would pay.

This week you have been so determined to complete all your learning tasks and you have done this with a great attitude and smile as well. Fantastic work!
For showing such a positive attitude to all aspects of your learning and always considering and respecting your fellow students.
For showing initiative in completing a task outside of the classroom for a school activity involving all students. You have also presented high levels of evaluative thinking as a text response.
For the constancy in her positive learning behaviour, demonstrating skills of an independent learner who seeks feedback and acts upon suggestions

Hi, Jai W speaking to you today to ask how you would feel if all students had to play sport? It would be fantastic !! Sports will help you be fit and healthy. Sport will get you stronger muscles. If you are fit you will run faster and you will win races at the school sport. Sport will help you feel happy and proud when you win races. Sports can make you happy while playing with your friends and family. I play football with my friends at school and it makes me feel happy. I look forward to recess and lunch time because I love playing football with my friends.
Sports can make you smarter. When you play sport it helps you learn strategies like to trick other player by moving side to side. It is clear that everyone should play sport. It will make you happy, fit and smarter. Jai W
Dogs are better pets then cats. Listen to my reason they are the best.
Dogs are fantastic because they can do tricks. Some tricks you can
teach dogs are to shake your hand, go around in circles, ride on
scooters, roll over, sit and play dead. When dogs do tricks it makes
you feel happy and people will be entertained by your dog. It is cool
when dogs do tricks.
Dogs would be brilliant for scaring robbers away because you’re
precious items won’t be stolen. But you will probably need a big dog
because if you have a small dog it can’t fight bad guys but big dogs
fight and that’s good.
Police use dogs to sniff out drugs and bad people and attack bad
people. The airport uses dogs as well so the dogs can sniff out fruit.
The detectives use them to sniff out people that are lost.
In conclusion I am sure you will understand that dogs are better than
cats because police use them and the airport uses them as well.

HAPPENINGS IN OUR HOMEGROUPS!
The Green Frog Because he sits there all alone On his wet and weedy stone While his chest heaves in and out In a breathless sort of pout, You would think he’d swum a race At a fast and frantic pace And was resting to regain His strength and stamina again But actually this little king Hasn’t done a single thing Except to sit there all the while With a wide and gummy smile. Literacy – Viewing
Comprehension Skill – Inference
You may view the clip at: https://www.respectability.org/2018/12/short-film-about-playground-inclusion-wins-international-acclaim/ Learning Intention- Students make inferences about what is happening in ‘ian’ and identify the authors’ purpose for the text viewed. Success Criteria – Students are able to record their thinking, responding to the text, and identify the purpose in creating such a text.
Student Response: It’s like every time someone picks on him or bullies him he gets torn to threads. It’s like he’s living in another dimension
where he’s in a litter of puppies and the rest are white and he’s the only black one, the odd one out. The lights that are
shining on his face is yellow representing hope. They’ve all been pulled into his world and are seeing how he feels - he
feels locked out like there’s no way things are going to change. Then the fence dissolves and everyone is welcomed in,
even Ian. One of the main characters, let’s just call her “Jessica” has eyes that are a really bright green - brighter than all
the other kids. Usually when I think of the colour green I think of nature and the exit sign on doorways so life and she also
had a little heart on her dress. Which I think symbolises love and care.

CURRICULUM CORNER
MARC NEWS Students have been completing an author study focusing on Australian Literature Legends. Junior students have enjoyed reading books by Alison Lester. They have created illustrations of different animal habitats based on the stories they have read. Year 2 – 6 classes are focusing on Author/ Illustrator Leigh Hobbs. Old Tom, the super lazy, mischievous cat is the main character of Leigh’s original books, the students have enjoyed drawing and creating stories about him, see sample works below.
Enjoy Reading, Kim James
Students viewed the fictional story of ‘ian’ – inspired by a real-life person, which is presented without character dialogue.
