Carrie Jewell Dugo, 37, didn’t hesitate to undergo a double mastectomy to save the life of her unborn child but she did mourn the loss of her femininity. The elaborate corset tattoo, which took 90 hours over 12 months to create, has given the mother-of-three back her confidence as it covers the scars and lumps and five subsequent reconstructive surgeries. Wild Oats Record: “Wild Oats XI claimed a record eight Sydney to Hobart line -honour victories, despite the entry of newer super maxis into the race. Photographing the race from the air presented many challenges, from budget restrictions and constant weather changes to managing flight times and distances for fuel. After strategic positioning together with the pilot, I was able to capture the Cape Raoul, Tasmania, in the foreground.” Brett Costello

Rugby Rain: “In April 2015 I covered a Monday night NRL match between the Cronulla Sharks and South Sydney. A large low pressure system engulfed Sydney with torrential rain and wind gusts of up to 100km/h. The atrocious conditions forced the NRL to consider calling the game off due to player safety. Shooting this game would prove to be one of the most challenging in my 17 years as a professional photographer. ” Brett Costello

Barassi’s Backyard: “The Victorian Living Treasures portrait of AFL footy legend Ron Barassi had to capture something about his life. Barassi mowing ‘his backyard’, the MCG, was it. I started pulling the pieces of the image together over two weeks: negotiating with his publicist as well as the protective MCG ground staff and sourcing props like an authentic Melbourne Demons jersey and the classic Victa mower.” David Caird

Masa’s Funeral: “The assignment to cover the funeral of murdered school girl Masa Vukotic was one of the saddest briefs I have covered. Inside the packed chapel service, I respectfully photographed Masa’s parents and family choking back tears as they watched a parade of mourners kiss her white coffin. This included a friend in her school uniform.” David Caird
