On second thought, one thing that could be better than the act of taking photos is having your own home based photo lab to develop your photos. When people think of a photo lab, they think of dark rooms. A dark room is a room that is designed to be dark. The purpose of the dark room is to develop photos using materials that a very sensitive to light. The first dark room was used around the 19th century. Due in part to digital photography, the use or need for dark rooms has declined considerably. A lot of pro photographers no longer use them but many that love this art as a hobby welcome the use of dark rooms as an added bonus and fun. Developing their own photos, gives the hobbyist a sense of fulfillment from knowing they developed and printed the pictures themselves. Below are a few tips to consider when you're building your own dark room. 1- Try to pick the best room in your house. Try to pick a room that does not have any windows. Maybe a spare bathroom or bedroom would be the best place for your dark room. 2- Be sure that you have good ventilation in the dark room. This will be your work space so make sure it is comfortable for working. 3- Be sure you cover any area of the room in which light can shine through. 4- Go to your local camera supply store and purchase the needed supplies for your dark room. A few of the things that you'll need will be: trays, tongs, a easel, fix and solution for developing as well as an enlarger.
