The type K focusing screen that comes with the N6000 hasthree focusing aids:A. Split-image focusingFor precise, pinpoint focusing of subjects with distinctedges/contours, turn the focusing ring until the split-imagebecomes whole.B. Microprism focusing

For rapid focusing and for subjects with indistinct outlines, turn focusing ring until the shimmering image becomessharp.C. Matte-field focusing

For close-up photography at high magnification, or whenusing a telephoto lens with a maximum aperture of approx.1111 or smaller, the split-image may darken. Turn focusingring until image on the matte field appears sharp.

The N6000 viewfinder covers approx. 92% of the imagearea of the actual photograph so the actual picturecomes out larger than the image in the viewfinder. Notethat the picture comes out trimmed down in the case ofmounted slides or service-size prints from negatives

When using a zoom lens:For maximum focusing accuracy, focus at the lens'longest focal length setting. The shallow depth of fieldand large image scale at the longest focal length settinghelp ensure pinpoint focusing. Conversely, focusing atthe shortest focal length setting and then zooming up tothe longest focal length setting will magnify any slightimprecision in focusing and could result in unsharppictures.

    28/85

    --- - - - - - - - - -- - - - - --EXPOSURE METERING SYSTEMSThe Nikon N6000 provides two types of exposure metering systems - Matrix Metering and Center-Weighted Metering.

MATRIX METERINGThis system is ideally suited for quick operation and for themost dependable auto exposure contro l. It can also be usedfor manual metering and flash exposure control operation wi thany Nikon TIL Speed ight.In Matrix Metering, the meter automatically provides the correctexposure of the main subject in virtually any lighting situation, without requiring manual exposure compensation. The MatrixMetering sensor determines scene brightness by dividing thescene into five areas, then analyzing each area for brightnessand scene contrast.

CENTER-WEIGHTED METERINGChoose Center-Weighted Metering when you want to baseexposure on ei ther auto or manual exposure control for a cetrally located subject. Selecting e r - W ~ i g h t e d Meteringoverrides Matrix Metering and concentrates 75% of the metsensitivity into the center of the viewfinder outlined by a 12mcircle.

    29/85

METERING SYSTEM SETTING1. Slide main switch to ON.2. While pressing metering system button, rotate commanddial until your desired symbol - ::l for Matrix Metering orfor Center-Weighted Metering appears in LCD panel.

Matrix Metering is possible only with lenses that have abuilt-in CPU (such as AF Nikkor and AI-P lenses). Whena lens without a built-in CPU or no lens is used, themetering system is automatically set to Center-Weighted.In either case, if you lightly press the shutter release button, the ::l symbol blinks.

METERING SYSTEM SELECTION - WHEN TO USEMATRIX OR CENTER-WEIGHTED METERINGIn scenes with both very bright and very dark areas, these twometering systems produce varying results. For example:A. Scene containing the sun or scenes with high reflectivity

If a scene contains strong highlights, such as the sun, snow orbright reflections, Center-Weighted Metering renders the mainsubject as a silhouette. With Matrix Metering, however, the lightvalue of darker parts is evaluated, resulting in an overall wellbalanced exposure.B. Outdoor backlit subjectWith Center-Weighted Metering, a backlit subject or scene with

people against a bright sky and/or clouds may lead to an underexposed shot. With Matrix Metering, however, the camera automatically gives more exposure to darker subjects to ensure abalanced overall exposure.C. Front-lit subject against dark background

If a brightly lit off-center subject is positioned against a darkbackground, Center-Weighted Metering places too much emphasis on the dark center of the picture. So although the backgroundis correctly exposed, the main subject will be overexposed. MatrixMetering, however, automatically integrates a dark backgroundwith a bright subject to ensure the best overall exposure.

EXPOSURE MODElight reaching the film is controlled by the sh utter and aper-ture. The proper combination of shutter and aperture settingsresults in the correct exposure. The necessary settings will bebased upon the ISO speed set for the film in use and theoperation of the camera's exposure control system. The relationship between aperture and shutter is as follows:One change in shutter speed either doubles or halves the lighttransmi tted. For example, 1/500 passes half the light as 1/250and double the light of 111000. The aperture 118 passes half thelight of 115.6 and double the light of 1111. If the correct exposurefor a scene is 1/500 at 118, then we can also se lect 1/250 at f/1 1or 111000 at 115 .6 and achieve the same exposure res ults.Se lecting the exposure control mode means deciding if youwant the shutter speed/aperture to be set automatically ormanually. The Nikon N6000 offers five modes: four automatic exposurecontrol modes - Auto Multi-Program (i:d), Normal-Programmed ( f j ) , Shutter-Pr iority auto ( ~ ) , and Aperture-Priorityauto (.BJ) - in addition to Manual (111) mode. Each exposure mode has its own advantages. In Programmed auto exposure mode, as the optimum combination of sh utter speed and aperture is automatically se t by theN6000's microcomputer, you can concentrate completely onpicture composition and have greater opportunities to shoot,wi thout worrying about exposure.

In Shutter-Priority auto exposure mode, you can manually sshutter speed as desired. That is, you can freeze the actionwith sharp, clear images using a fast shutter speed, or creatmotion effects by choosing slower shutter speeds. In Aperture-Priority auto exposure mode, you can control deof field by varying the aperture. You can use a larger apertu(smaller f-number) for shallower depth of field to create softeless distinct backgrounds, or choose a sma ller aperture (larf-number) for greater depth of field. In Manual exposure mode, in addition to controlling both shter speed and aperture, you can easi ly create intentiona llyover- or underexposed photos.

For Programmed auto or Shutter-Priority auto exposuremode, use only lenses that have a built- in CPU such asAF Nikkor or AI-P lenses. With other lenses, exposuremode is automatically set to Aperture-Priority auto andthe metering system to Center-Weighted.In this case, when you lightly press shutter release button, exposure mode indicator blinks and F-- appears onthe LCD panel.

PROGRAMMED (PM and P) AUTOThe N6000 offers two programmed auto exposure modes:Auto Multi-Program mode and Normal Program mode.Picture sharpness can vary with the shutter speed used. Difent focal length lenses handle differently at slow shutterspeeds. The recommended slowest shutter speed to be usewith any lens when hand-holding the camera IS 1/focal leng(FL) of the lens. For example, with a 60mm lens, use 1/60 sas the slowest hand-held speed. Keep in mind, however, tha1/30 sec. is the lowest recommended shutter speed for blurfree hand-held shooting. The N6000's Auto Multi-Program varies the exposure progrlines according to the focal length and lens maximum aperture. The inclinations of lines in the chart are designed to reduce the possibility of picture blur by avoiding slower shuttespeeds. With Normal Program, you get a standard combinaof shutter speed and aperture.

APERTURE-PRIORITY AUTO EXPOSURE MODESelect the aperture based on how shallow or large you wantdepth of field to be. Smaller apertures will make the back-ground and foreground sharper (good for scenic pictures)while larger apertures will produce a shallower depth of field(good for portraits). Your selected aperture will determine theshutter speed which is automatically set by the camera's com-puter. When using the sma ller apertures with correspondingslower shutter speeds, remember as a rule of thumb that anyspeed below 1/30 sec. may require the use of a tripod to pre-vent picture blur due to camera shake. Also, the higher thecorresponding shutter speed, the easier it is to stop action.Adjust the selected aperture if the speed is not appropriate forconditions or the specific effect you want. 50/85

Matrix Metering provides the main subject with correct exposure in virtually any lighting situation, without having to usemanual exposure compensation. But in Center-WeightedMetering, for situations where you want to change compositions or for unusual situations such as snowscapes, backlitsubjects or when the main subject contrasts sharply with thebackground, exposure compensation is recommended. Also, in Matrix Metering, "correct" exposure is a value basedon a combination of film sensitivity, aperture and shutter speednecessary to produce a "technically correct" exposure result. We often want to vary the exposure results to create differentversions of the same picture or put creative emphasis on aspecific part of the picture. This is accomplished by usingexposure compensation.Exposure compensation can be accomplished in either one ora combination of the following ways. AE (Auto Exposure) Lock Lever Exposure Compensation Button Auto Exposure BracketingAs the results can vary depending on conditions, you maywant to experiment with each method.

Note on Close-Up Photographye ln close-up photography, depth of field is generallyshallow. Thus, you must stop lens aperture down asmuch as possible to get the greatest area of sharpfocus.e lmage magnification is so high that even the slightestmovement during shooting will cause a blurred image. To avoid this, use tripod with a cable release to activatethe shutter.

To correct both near- and farsightedness, nine lenses are avaiable from -5 to +3 diopter values. These values are derivedfrom the dioptry of both the finder and the correction lens.Eyepiece Magnifier OG-2Provides 2x magnification of the central portion of the finderimage with Eyepiece Adapter. There are two types of synchron ization:Normal Sync which fires the flash at th e start of the exposure, and Rear Sync which fires the flash at the end of the exposure.f-numberNumber which indicates brightness of film plane image. Increasing/decreasing f-number is opening/stopping down lensaperture. The f-number series is equivalent to 1.4, 2, 2.S, 4, 5.6,S, 11 , 16 , 22, 32, etc. Changing one step to th e next largernumber (i.e., from 111 1 to 1116) decreases image brightness by1/2; moving to nearest lower number doubles th e brightness.Guide numberThe number given to a flash bulb or electronic flash unit toindicate its power.
