Nightwood Theatre's 2013-14 Season BrochureTRANSCRIPT
Since 1979 Nightwood has been making space for women, giving voice to the myriad of stories that compose our lives. In a world
where women’s experience is historically under-represented in the cultural narrative,
Nightwood is a beacon.
We are thrilled to bring you another dynamic season of theatre filled with provocative and
insightful work by women. This year’s fare includes plays from both Canada and abroad,
and though extremely different stylistically they are both deeply human stories that touch us.
In Free Outgoing, by India’s Anupama Chandrasekhar, a daughter’s
scandal envelops a single mother in shame, and the barriers of her gender leave her
reeling in crisis. In The Carousel by Quebec’s Jennifer Tremblay (playwright of our critically acclaimed production of The List, 2010-11)
the imminent death of a mother makes a woman confront the silent strain of her
family to find a truth she wasn’t expecting.
These remarkable plays resonate from both a personal and political place, exposing deeply relevant issues in
our lives. We are so pleased to share them with you.
Welcome to our 2013/14 season.

One message is all it took. When a young girl is fi lmed during a sexual
indiscretion, the video clip spreads like a virus infecting her community and then
the entire country with a burning moral outrage. Free Outgoing sets the rampant technology of the modern world against
the conservatism of traditional India, and asks the universal question, how can we
protect our girls in the digital age?
