2012-13 SEASON
Women are extraordinary creatures. Courageous, passionate and caring; our impact is profound. But women
suffer, even as we succeed. We live in varying degrees of inequity. Violence is
pervasive. We are used to sell things from organic beer to fast cars. Women
are commoditized and reduced.
This is why we tell stories: to mitigate the message. Theatre can awaken us,
help us unlearn, and redefine what humanity is capable of. At Nightwood, articulating
our place in the world is the purpose; making essential theatre is the goal.
This season we return with Margaret Atwood’s wildly successful
The Penelopiad, premiere Jordi Mand’s razor sharp Between the Sheets
and develop the formidable Judith Thompson’s Who Killed Snow White? for
The New Groundswell Festival.
Welcome to the 2012-13 Season: Theatre for everyone. Made by women.

Between the Sheets
What begins as an ordinary parent teacher interview unravels into
a gripping and raw confrontation between two women on the brink
of disaster. One woman is fighting to protect her family. The other is fighting for the family she always
wanted. With razor sharp intensity, Mand has crafted a rollercoaster
ride of high stakes drama.

Following its wildly successful sold out run, The Penelopiad returns
to the stage! In Atwood’s daring response to Homer’s The Odyssey,

Be one of 10,000 to give $10 to support women’s voice in the arts.
10,000 WOMENHONOUR A WOMANIN YOUR LIFE!
Did you know:
• 72% of theatres in Canada are run by men. • Of the 1006 credited playwrights produced in Canada in 2010 only 288 were women. That is only 29%. • Only 33% of the plays produced are directed by women. • Approximately 70% of audiences attending the performing arts are women. • Nightwood showcased the works of 10 Canadian woman playwrights this year alone.
Equity in the arts is still an issue for women. In response and as a call to action, we are embarking on a 10,000 WOMEN campaign in support of women’s voice in the arts. For every $10 you donate, we invite you to honour a woman of your choice. When we hit our goal, we will recognize in print these remarkable women.
