NIGHTSESSION NIGHTSESSION 1. synopsisWithout specific reason, four guys drift through the nocturnal city of Munich on their skateboards. Why?‘Cause that’s what they are up for!
Their names are Jonas, Tom, Sergio, Pacel. Man, do they love their skateboards. They spend one night in Munich, city of riches, and take the bourgeois streets back, scratching their surfaces, rims and angles. Museums piazzas, garages and closed hardware stores are their playground in this nightsession. And that is purely enough for outstanding cinema. The element of passion, and the readiness to do what you want and break some rules in a playful way (and maybe an ankle or a shoulder if the „impact“ of street and body comes to quick and hard).
Director-Producer Philipp Dettmer has turned back to his own youth as a skateboarder, bringing together some of the most promising young athletes on board from southern Germany in this work of heart. His film is a hybrid: both directly observing documentary of a lifestyle and a fictional account of one crazy night out. The scenes that take they guys from one place to another, the streets to bars and back, were actually shot within four nights. The cultural codes the four skate-boarders use and the way they speak come from the very core of the subculture – offering a poignant glimpse into this world rarely accomplished with such natural ease. By the time the sun comes up, the skateboarders have definitely had a night to remember.
„Nightsession“ is a film for skateboarders, obviously, but equally for people who have never stood on these four wheels. Because it tells us about the pure, un-compromised fun that life can be – and delivers this feeling in a wonderfully laid-back way.

NIGHTSESSION NIGHTSESSION 5. FAQs to Philipp Dettmer1 What does the film title „Nightsession“ mean?
When you go skateboarding with your friends, you call that a “session”. A “Nightsession” is the common expression for a nocturnal skateboarding session.Like jam-sessions in music, a skateboarding session is dominated by spontaneity and a process-like flow - I wanted to transfer and translate these characteris-tics onto the production process of the film and thus defined and understood the shooting as a process, and not as the “simple” execution or attention handling of a (non-existing) screenplay.
As we shot “Nightsession” like a session, I really like the title’s second meaning.
2 How did you come up with the idea to „Nightsession“?
At the age of 16 some friends and I spontaneously took the last train to Munich in order to go skateboarding. At night many places and spots of the daily life are deserted and thus appealing to skateboarders (not taking the securities into account...) In Munich we just drifted around, rode from spot to spot, had a beer in this bar, a beer in that bar and just did whatever we wanted to - everything felt so harmonic and peaceful, we just lived in this very night, without yesterday or tomorrow. When we took the first train home the next morning, we were pretty tired and seriously drunk, but incredibly happy!
And even though nothing spectacular had happen that very night, it was one of those rare “magical”, “perfect” nights. And as skateboarding was the central and triggering element of that night, I wanted to create my personal memorial to that sport, that has been part of my life for the last 25 years.
3 What tempted you the most directing “Nightsession”?
Being a passionate skateboarder, I wanted to capture the fascination of skateboarding, without using the common clichés and stereotypes. Especially for “out-siders” it is nearly impossible to understand this culture - you got a couple of funny looking people jumping around, talking in cryptic terms and using incompre-hensible codes. With all those hindrances it is impossible to develop a comprehension or sympathy for the skateboarding-scene. But skateboarding is not only an amazing sport, but also a wonderful attitude towards life, whose fascination, beauty and ease I wanted to capture and communicate in an honest and entertain-ing way to the audience.
The “act of drifting”, the fact of just cruising from spot to spot and figure out, what the night has to offer - these elements were perfect for my intention!
NIGHTSESSION NIGHTSESSION
On a film-theoretical level I was obsessed by the attempt to create a highly authentic film, that manages to let the audience not only become part of the action, but also to “honestly” entertain it, without using the known dramaturgical means. Meaning: a film without any “classical” dramaturgy, without any theoretical superstructure, without a “hero’s journey”, without any “call of adventure”, etc. Indeed I got many warnings in advance, cautioning me not to leave dramaturgy aside and recommending me to create more drop height, to dramatize the scenes, to evoke conflicts, etc. But in order to keep the film as authentic as possible, I decided to leave such artificial interventions aside! My personal nightsession back than also took place without any master plan and did not contain any “spec-tacular” elements, but nevertheless became a magical night. A night, that only life itself is able to “write”. And that was exactly what I wanted to achieve with “Nightsession”.
And in this way, my concept for directing corresponded structurally with the thought of action of “just drifting”, without using any dramaturgical superstructure.
4 You shot „Nightsession“ without using a screenplay – were you afraid of ending up with an unwatchable film?
Due to all the warnings I received upfront regarding shooting such a topic without a screenplay, I obviously started thinking about the accuracy of my decision, but also got pretty incited about it. Since my own nightsession back than I am persuaded, that also easy, supposed unexciting stories can have a strong impact, as long as you got the right protagonists, respectively that they do allow the viewer to participate in the action and allow her/ him room for her/ his personal identification.I had no doubt that this would be the case with Tom, Sergio, Jonas and Pacel! Every one of them disposing of a pronounced, open and loveable personality and an incredible wit. The four of them together were not only unbelievable harmonic, but the most hillarious construct I have seen in a long time! A bunch of young people I couldn’t withdraw myself from!
The second challenge for me consisted in creating an entertaining film from the material we shot over the five nights. A film that would impress the viewer with its unagitated narrative thread – here, „Nightsession“ is in stark contrast to all those incredibly fast and „loud“ films and clips, all screaming for attention. With its mantra-esque narrative thread and its unobtrusiveness, I do understand „Nightsession“ as antithesis to the omnipresent eventisation that surrounds us ev-erywhere and every time.
In the editing process my editor, Frank Brandstetter, and I distilled the footage over and over and tried to show and draw the boys’ individual personalities, as well as their group’s dynamics in the way I understood and valued it.
While watching the first rough-edit I already knew, that we would reach this goal, and while watching the second edit I was persuaded that my fascination for the boys could be transferred to and capture the audience!
NIGHTSESSION NIGHTSESSION
5 This means that „Nightsession“ is a sociological experiment?
As skateboarding disposes of an incredibly strong social component and as I am deeply fascinated by human behavior, I defined „Nightsession“ also as my per-sonal sociological experiment.
The four guys knew each other from the local skate-spots, not much more. Accordingly „bumpy“ was the group’s structure and their talks in the beginning. When you compare the first with the last day of shooting, the difference is enormous – the four became a sworn in team, the talks within the group got more and more personal, familiar and intimate and real friendships were created. After the shooting I invited the boys over to my place to watch the first rough-edit together – that really felt like class reunion! We couldn’t stop laughing and talked about stuff that happened throughout the shooting til very, very late. Imagining the boys meeting again occasionally in the distant future, I am sure that they’ll immediately start talking about their „Nightsession“, back in the later summer 2014.
You can’t produce such incidents with a pre-written script/ screenplay, this would end up in an artificial pathos – which I absolutely wanted to avoid! I thus preferred to re-produce the situations of such a nightsession in the shooting, than to let the boys play a pre-defined role. The guys were really experiencing these nights, I created a surrounding in which more or less authentic actions took place. A Petri Dish, in which, over the course of our five nights of shooting, the film could develop the same ways as the friendships between the guys. Editing and post-production finally assorted all these elements to the finished film, an image of one night.
6 Is „Nightsession“ a documentary or a feature film?
For my understanding, „Nightsession“ is neither a classical documentary, nor a classical feature film, but a conscious and planned walk on the border between reality and fiction – a border that has been interesting and fascinating me for a long time.
Knowingly omitting a screenplay and collaborating with not even amateur actors did allow me to focus on „smaller“, supposed less important things – landed tricks, situational comedy, discussions without a deeper meaning, outside influences, etc. All these details, which we captured using a very documentary-style camera, grant the film in their sum a certain magic. And within the sum of all its parts, there lies the transition from experiment to a very subtle, discreet narra-tive level, in which the above mentionned magic arises.
A magic, that has its source in „real“ life, a magic that can be felt by the viewer and lets her/ him become part of the story. That’s why I understand „Nightses-sion“ as my personal definition of „magical realism“.
NIGHTSESSION NIGHTSESSION
7 How did you find your four protagonists?
The casting-process was very long and very intense! First of all I was looking for skateboarders belonging to a younger, for me unknown generation than myself. Secondly I have a pretty clear vision of the boys’ characteristics. And finally I was looking for technically advanced skateboarders.
In a first step I Iaunched a nationwide casting-call with the support of Monster Skateboarding Magazine – a call that let to an enormous response. As none of the applicants could convince me a 100%, I continued searching magazines and blogs. In December 2013 I discovered an article about the „Favorite Skateboards“ skateboard team – on a photo you had all the riders, one of them wearing a very nice mustache and looking ultra-bored but ultra-funny into the camera – I immediately knew that I had to meet this guy! Thomas Eckert and I met only one week afterwards. I told him about the project, which he immediately understood and loved. He also told me to check out Jonas Rosenbauer, one of his team-mates at Favorite Skateboards. Jonas dug the project, too, and recommended meeting Sergio Grosu. Sergio wanted to participate himself, too, but was worried about his thesis, that he had to write in the same time. But finally we all somehow talked him into leaving the thesis aside for a couple of days.Pacel, the youngest of the guys, came through my DP Chris Behnisch. When I met Pacel, who was just about writing his final exams in high school, I met an open hearted, very funny guy, who wanted to be part of this undertaking, too. He even postponed his holidays for the shooting of „Nightsession“, a fact I still appreci-ate very much!
8 How was it working with „amateur“ actors?
As I wanted „Nightsession“ to be as authentic as possible, it was obvious for me to work with „real“ skateboarders. Normally you would cast actors, pretending to know the skateboarding-culture, who would learn the scene’s codes, words and movements and would be doubled when it came to riding the skateboard. This was exactly the kind of approach I wanted to avoid! I mean, the audience is not stupid, they’ll feel the difference, that’s for sure!
Working with the boys was hillarious! Before actually shooting we met a couple of times – to talk about the story on the one hand side, but mainly to get to know to each other.
As the boys did not only not have any film-experience, but were also unfamiliar with my way of working and directing, I was afraid that they would somehow start acting arfificially in front of the camera. I knew that I had to be on the same page with them and that the only way of getting the material I wanted was to create mutual trust. I therefore came up with some rules like: “Whoever is feeling uncomfortable with one scene let’s me know immediately!”
As I also wanted them to understand their on-screen appearance, I invited them to watch the dailiesand offered them to delete scenes they thought were embar-rissing for them. This fact really impressed them and created the mutual trust between us.
NIGHTSESSION NIGHTSESSION
It was really impressive to watch and feel the boys grow together as a team – a process you could feel from day to day.The honesty and respect within the group lead to this naturalness and serenity of the boys – which you can feel by watching the film only for a couple of min-utes. For me, it feels like being part of their crew, drifting through the night on a skateboard with them!
9 What did the work on „Nightsession“ teach you about directing?
I once again became aware of how much I appreciate „external circumstances“ in the process of creation – irrelevant if these are incidences or ideas while working on the story, pure coincidences, unpredictable events or adversities while shooting – all these constant challenges of „external circumstances“ are something very demanding and tiring, but also something very unique and challenging and somehow my personal kick. And as we shot „Nightsession“ without a serious budget, we could not complain about too few „external circumstances“...
10 How was „Nightsession“ financed?
Broadcasters, private financiers and funding institutions were interested in the basic idea of „Nightsession“, but finally did not want to go for it. As I’ ve been haunted by this story for a couple of years now and as I am persuaded, that there are people out there wanting to see this film, I financed „Nightsession“ out of my own pocket.
11 What are your plans for the near future?
Firstly I will take good care of the festival and commercial exploitation of „Nightsession“ and sincerely hope, that many people will like and appreciate the film. Perhaps „Nightsession“ will motivate former skateboarders or even people who never skateboarded to jump on a board nearby? Or motivate them to simply let them drift through the night? This would be amazing!
As a director I want to continue working on my „magical realism“ and re-examine the border between reality and fiction – but by focusing on a horror-film! I am really fascinated by fear as such and artificially created fear to an even greater extent. Further more I am persuaded that the horror-genre does allow – besides milestones like „Blair With“ or such – a further push towards reality and thus towards scarying the audience even more.
Besides being passionate about film, I am into architecture and do run a small architectural office together with my best friend. And we do have two highly inter-esting projects I can’t wait to realize.
NIGHTSESSION NIGHTSESSION
11 What are your plans for the near future?
Firstly I’ll take good care of “Nightsession” and hope, that many people will enjoy the film the way I do. Perhaps the film even manages to re-activate former skateboarders or push “normal” people to start this amazing sport or at least motivate friends to simply drift through the night? That would be amazing!
As a director I will continue with “my” “magical realism” and re-investigate the border between reality and fiction. But this time in the horror-genre - I am really fascinated by fear as such, and artificially created fear (by films) is even more challenging! Further more I am persuaded, that, besides milestones like “Blair with”, there is still room for a more intensive and longer lasting fear.
And besides being into film, I run a small architecture office with my best friend and we do have to really nice projects I can’t wait to realize.
