February is here, and the stores are flooded with roses and chocolates that have doubles in price as the month changed over from January. Valentine’s has us call to mind those we love and love in general. Love of family and friends.

That is what we do here at EDW. We take care of our families, our friends, our Churches, and our community. Through our charity we show the world the depth of our love. The relationship of the Council, the Columbus Club and the Community make our charitable endeavors possible. The Council provides our charitable outlet, the Club maintains the facilities and operates the business, and the community can enjoy the facilities and grounds.

The Church dedicated this month to the Holy Family. This year the first 25 days of February fall during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time which is represented by the liturgical color green. Green, the symbol of hope, is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. The remaining days of February are the beginning of Lent. The liturgical color changes to purple — a symbol of penance, mortification and the sorrow of a contrite heart.

The month of February is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Family. Between the events which marked Christmas and the beginning of Christ's public life the Church has seen fit to recall the example of the Holy Family for the emulation of the Christian family.

Though the shortest month of the year, February is rich in Liturgical activity. It contains a feast (Presentation of our Lord) that bridges two other seasons (Christmas and

Easter)! In addition, the faithful may receive in February two of the four major public sacramentals that the Church confers during the liturgical year: blessed candles and the blessing of throats.

The Solemnity of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd harkens back to the Christmas mystery of Light except that now, Christ, the helpless babe, is “the Light of Revelation to the Gentiles who will save his people from their sins.” Candles, symbolizing Christ our Light, will be carried in procession this day, as will be the Paschal candle during the Easter Vigil Liturgy.

"The Light of Revelation" shines more brightly with each successive Sunday of Ordinary Time, until its magnificence – exposing our sinfulness and need for conversion – propels us into the penitential Season of Lent. We prepare to accept the cross of blessed ashes on Ash Wednesday and plunge ourselves sin to anticipating the major exercises of Lent – fasting, prayer, almsgiving – laying our thoughts and prayers on the heart of our Mother Mary. She, who offered her Son in the temple and on the Cross, will teach us how to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow her Son.

I ask that you prayerfully prepare for Lent which starts in the 26th, enjoy some fish tacos or a filet o’ fish sandwich, and get to Confession when able. Please check out the rooms rates on page 5 reaffirmed at the last Columbus Club Board meeting. Save the date for the Annual EDW Easter Egg Hunt - Holy Saturday April 11th.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

BEST LENTEN IDEAS FOR YOU AND THE FAMILY

By GK John Rovinski, Jr.

Wondering What to Give up for Lent? If you are looking for things to give up for Lent, you’ve come to the right place. During the 40 days of lent, while making our preparations for Easter, you can do something to better yourself and the world around you.

A Lenten fast doesn’t have to consist of just fasting and abstinence from the things we love, but it can be adding things during this season of lent that will make our lives more meaningful.

What to give up for Lent:If you want what to give up for Lent… start here with these 10

ideas of what to give up for Lent. I have also added in some ideas of what you can ADD or DO for Lent, to better yourself and help others.

1. Don’t buy anything you don’t need. 2. Throw away or donate 40 things for 40 days.3. 40 days of home organization.4. No Gossiping.5. No eating after dinner. 6. Give up soda for Lent. 7. Say 3 nice things about your spouse and kids daily. 8. Don’t eat out for 40 days.9. Replace 30 minutes of TV with 30 minutes of prayer.10. Do not complain.

Lent is just a great time to better yourself. It is a great time to try to do something to better your spirit & your heart for 40 days. I’d encourage you to also encourage your children to try to give something up, as well. 40 days is not that long and remember it will make the joy of Easter that much sweeter. Happy Lent!

LTC IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

There are many financial consultants and retirement au-thorities who emphasize the need for a long-term care (LTC) product for estate preservation and family protection. While many commercial life insurance

companies have gotten out of the long-term care business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our members this product for nearly 17 years without a premium increase on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased an LTC plan from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk about stability when it counts.

If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your schedule to meet with us.

Remember, long-term care policies are underwritten based on your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier than you are today.

LONG-TERM CARE PLANS OFFER PEACE OF MIND

Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care policy holders in the United States, there’s an added bonus.

It’s called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network includes discounts on products, such as hearing aids, diabetic supplies, personal emergency response systems, and durable medical equipment, as well as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and adult day care.

Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus long-term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements.

If you haven’t yet spoken with us about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are a few decisions to make in choosing a “plan” — a comprehensive plan that covers care whether you’re at home or in a facility, or one that covers facility only; daily benefit amounts and benefit durations (how much and how long it will last); and the length of the elimination period (waiting period) before benefits kick-in.

Having a professionally trained agent ― and brother Knights you can trust ― to help guide you through the process is yet another valuable benefit that comes with your membership. Take advantage of it; contact us today. Robert J. Canter, Jr., FICF, LUTCF, CSA 301-952-0180

LENTEN FAST & ABSTINENCE(WWW.USCCB.ORG)

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
