The Efik-Ibibio is located at the coastal southeastern Nigeria. Efik-Ibibio language is spoken in Akwa Ibom State and Cross RiverState. It has various dialects such as the Annang dialect, Orondialect, and many others.

The Efik-Ibibio people are blessed with various edible vegetables.Their food is popular throughout the entire Nigeria including thepopular Afañg soup, Edikang Ikong soup, pepper soup, Ukwoho,Atama,Eritañ, jeloff-rice, etc.

Igbos

Third largest ethnic group Igboland is the home of the Igbo peopleand it covers most of Southeast Nigeria. This area is divided by theNiger River into two unequal sections – the eastern region (whichis the largest) and the midwestern region. The Igbos, who are mostly Christians. Their traditional religion isknown as Odinani. Socially they are led by monarchs known asEze Igwes.

Hausa/Fulani

Largest ethnic group The Hausa and Fulani are two ethnic groupswhich were formerly distinct but are now intermixed to the extentof being regarded as one inseparable ethnic nation.

Although found throughout the grassland belt of West Africa, thebulk of the Hausa/Fulani population is concentrated in NorthernNigeria especially in and around the centres of Sokoto, Kano andKatsina which were important market centres on the southernsection of the trans-Saharan caravan trade routes in the past.

Being the largest ethnic group in Nigeria, Hausa have always beensome of the main players in Nigerian politics since Nigeria wasgranted independence from Britain in 1960.

Yoruba

Second ethnic group Yoruba people live mostly in SouthwestNigeria. They have developed a variety of different artistic formsincluding pottery, weaving, beadwork, metalwork, and maskmaking. Most artwork is made to honour the gods and ancestorsand since there are more than 401 known gods to the Yoruba thereis much sculpture and artwork made.

Yoruba are usually identified as Christian or Muslim, although alot of Yoruba still uphold traditional aspects of their ancestorsreligious practices and beliefs. This ethnic group upholds manycultural traditions, including music and culture festivals, traditionalYoruba art, and conventional architecture. The Yoruba culture hashistorically relied on large populations in a centralized location andan Oba (King).

Ijaw

The Ijaw live in the Niger River Delta area of Nigeria andconstitute around 10% of the population of the country. The Ijawhave historically had tensions with the rest of the Nigerianpopulation. The lands in which the Ijaw inhabit are extremely oil-rich.

Kanuri

The Kanuri people are found in northeastern Nigeria. Theirpopulation is believed to be around 4% of Nigeria (approximately4,000,000). The regions in which Kanuri live are largelyimpractical for outsiders to reach. Kanuri people are predominatelySunni Muslims.

Fulani

Since the Fulani War (1804-1808), the Fulani people have beenintertwined with the Hausa of Nigeria. This is largely due tointermarriage and Fulani living among the Hausa population.Fulani and Hausa together make up approximately 29% of thepopulation of Nigeria.

Ibibio

The Ibibio, mostly found in southeastern Nigeria, have a rich oralhistory passed down through generations. These people have livedin this part of Nigeria for several hundred years. This ethnic groupnumbers approximately 4.5 million which is equivalent to 3.5% ofthe population of Nigeria.

Ibibio people in the region also inquired (with the British Crown)to become their own sovereign nation within Nigeria (pre-independence). Today, Ibibio predominantly identify themselves asChristian. Ibibio has an amazing artistic culture, most known forcreating intricate wooden masks and carvings.

Tiv

The ethnic group known as Tiv are well known for theiragricultural produce and the trading of this produce. This is one ofthe only sources of income for the group. The Tiv people all tracetheir ancestry back to an ancient individual also named Tiv, whohad two sons. Some Tiv people identify as Christians, even less asMuslim.

The traditional religion of Tiv, based on manipulations of forces byhumans who have been entrusted by a creator God, remains strongwithin the Tiv populace. Tiv only make up 3.5% of the Nigerianpopulation, making them one of the smaller ethnic groups withinthe country.
