    NIEHS Summer Internship Program

     The Summer Internship Program at the NationalInstitute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)provides an opportunity to spend a summer workingat the institute, side by side with some of the leadingscientists in the world, in an environment devotedexclusively to environmental health research.

    Summer internships at NIEHS are awarded tooutstanding high school and undergraduate studentsinterested in pursuing education and careers in thebiomedical or biological sciences. Students will work onan environmental health research project that involves

    exposure to the latest biochemical, molecular, andanalytical techniques.

    Scientific disciplines in which interns may work includethe following:

    • bioinformatics

    • biophysics

    • cancer biology

    • clinical research

    • computer modeling

    • DNA repair

    • developmental biology

    • epidemiology

    • gene regulation

    • genetics

    • molecular toxicology

    • neuroscience

    • pharmacology

    • pulmonary biology

    • reproductive biology

    • risk assessment• signal transduction

    • statistics

     The Summer Internship Program is highly competitive,and interns are chosen by mentors based on academic

    achievements, educational goals, demonstration ofan interest in the biomedical or environmental healthsciences, and letters of recommendation. It is an intensiveeducational and research experience, and summer internsare expected to spend 8-12 consecutive weeks workingfull time within the May-September time frame.

    Eligibility

    Applicants must be:

    • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

    • Currently enrolled, full time or part time (at least half time

    in a diploma- or degree-granting program. If you are agraduating senior, you must be enrolled in an upcomingfall semester at the next higher level of education.

    • At least 16 years old on start date.

    Stipend Information

    Stipends for trainees are adjusted yearly. The amountreceived depends on prior experience and level ofeducation. For further details, see Stipend Informationat www.training.nih.gov/programs/sip.
