CHICAGO NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DANCE MASTERS
SPRING 2018 NEWS
CNADM’s Artistic Achievement Award goes to Nick Pupillo — a dancer and creator in one – inspiring people of all ages with his vision and craft.
Founder and Artistic Director of Visceral Dance Chicago… and renowned choreographer for many works… Nick is now the guest of honor at CNADM’s 106th Annual Awards Banquet!
Nick graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science in Ballet, and in 2001, he joined the acclaimed Giordano Dance Chicago where he toured nationally and internationally for three years. In the years following, Nick worked with other groups performing and choreographing, including Dance Chicago, Schaumburg Dance Ensemble, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and more.
It wasn’t until after Nick received “The Dance Chicago Outstanding Choreography Award” (for the first time) in 2005, that he began to work towards his biggest creative venture yet. It was then, in 2007, when Nick founded Visceral Dance Center.
Visceral Dance Center provided the Chicago community with a new venue for artistic and technical growth. This facility continues to be a Chicago dance landmark. TimeOut Chicago lists Visceral Dance Center as “A bustling, well-appointed facility...with instructors from top companies and in-demand guest teachers.” Utilized by a number of Chicago-based companies, Visceral Dance Center is home to its resident company, Visceral Dance Chicago.
Nick founded Visceral Dance Chicago in the fall of 2013, of which he is currently the Artistic Director. Through the dance company, Nick presents his vision of choreography, exploring new ways of dance in contemporary movement.
For Visceral Dance Chicago, Nick created five signature works, including Impetere, Senza di te, My Realm, Sum Noir and She Three, and continues to commission choreography world premieres around the globe. Nick has helped create such premieres by Sidra Bell, Banning Bouldin, Monica Cervantes, Brian Enos, and Robyn Mineko Williams.
Nick is frequently invited to conduct master classes in the U.S. and around the world. He has taught for organizations such as the Jazz Dance World Congress, Chicago Dance Connection, and CNADM.
Many may recognize Nick as an instructor favorite at CNADM, teaching classes on ballet, lyrical and contemporary dance.
We are excited to have Nick Pupillo back for CNADM’s Summer Workshops, and proud to be presenting Nick with CNADM’s Artistic Achievement Award. Congratulations!

Dear Members,
On behalf of the CNADM Board of Directors we hope that your 2018 is off to a great start.
A non-dancer colleague recently asked me, “What is CNADM?” Throughout my explanation,
the words “education” and “opportunity” continued to arise — and I realized our 106-year-old
organization is exactly that!
Education: From the certification programs that are offered to teachers to the “How
to Teach” that is presented to them in Training School; from the educational opportunities
for their students in the Student Honors program to the training that students receive as
we prepare them for a life outside the dance studio in our Dance & More and Ballet Forum
programs - education is the foundation for every activity at the CNADM Workshops.
Opportunity: Teachers are able to dance and take classes, attend business and
networking sessions, and observe their students during our student sessions.
Then, our workshop closes with a Competition and a Wrap-up Rally. It’s clear to see that
CNADM has something for everyone!
Over the years, each of our Principals — whose job it is to hire faculty — have selected
a wide variety of wonderfully trained, talented, dance professionals, and this summer is no
exception. Our newest principal, Terri Sinani, MDE, will put her spin on this year’s summer
workshop, where we offer many educational opportunities for all!
We look forward to you joining us!
Sincerely,
Julie Bodle, MDE

The 20th annual Choreography Festival was celebrated at the McCallum Theatre, Palm Desert CA, with the event highlighted by a Lifetime Achievement Award given to noted tap dancer Savión Glover.
The competition’s dancing varied from modern to jazz to ballet, and ranged from the simplest staging and lighting, to complex and emotional
performances such as Freeman’s in which the dancers were clad in unitards embellished to look like wetsuits that complimented the ocean theme of the dance.
Of special interest were the Master Classes taught by Mari Meade of the Mari Meade Dance Collective in Brooklyn NY, and Jenn Freeman, New York-based performer, choreographer and teacher.
Savion Glover’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognized his career that began in childhood and includes a Tony Award, Broadway and film credits and even the choreography for the films “Happy Feet” and “Happy Feet 2.” Glover paid tribute to the genius of tappers and musicians who preceded him including Jimmy Slyde, Gregory Hines, Isaiah Lon Chaney, Buster Brown, Dianne Walker, Chuck Green, Sir Slyde, Ralph Brown, Ivery Dan, Henry LeTang, George Hillman and John Coltrane.
