202020202020Director’s Desk
Ushering of new year 2020 gives an opportunity to glance at the successes of the preceding year and set new goals for the future. We are delighted to share those with you.
Established in 1995, ICAR-NIANP is on the threshold of completion of 25 years. Year “2020” is being celebrated “Silver Jubilee Year of the Institute”. I am pleased to share that the institute was conferred with the “Swachhata Pakhwada Award-2018” (First) among all the ICAR institutes for its commendable efforts in keeping its premises clean along with planting of saplings and awareness activities undertaken at nearby villages under Swachhata Pakhwada programme.
Feeding has a direct effect on the growth, production and health status of the livestock. Feed and fodder availability are the major factors that determine the profitability, successful and sustainable livestock farming. As we are aware that the feeding cost is the major expense in the livestock production system. Therefore, balanced nutrition is highly essential to sustain the optimum performance of animals. The balanced nutrition ensures sufficient quantity and quality of essential nutrients such amino acids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. Further, dietary supplementation of certain nutrients such as arginine, glutamine, zinc and conjugated linoleic acid may favor the metabolic pathways that enhance animal performance, fertility, immune function and feed efficiency. The balanced feeding management in ruminants may maximize profits and minimize losses, enhance feed efficiency and animal productivity with reduced methane emission. ICAR-NIANP is working on this line to address the issues of farmers by developing various farmers friendly technologies such as Reprofat - a supplement to address reproductive issues and low milk fat syndrome and Harit Dhara - an anti-methanogenic supplement to reduce enteric methane emission in ruminants.
The institute organized a short-term training programme for the African Nationals on ‘Feed and fertility management in livestock’ sponsored by the India-Africa Forum Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt of India. In addition, ICAR sponsored 21 days winter school on ‘Livestock production and climate change: impact, adaptation and mitigation’ was organized for the scientist and teachers of ICAR institutes, SAUs and SVUs. A model training course on ‘Integrated nutrient management strategies for smallholder crop livestock production system’ was organized for the extension functionaries, working in agriculture and allied departments of states sponsored by the Directorate of Extension, Dept of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, New Delhi. On
ththe occasion of National Milk Day on 26 November, 2019 NIANP hosted a technical seminar on ‘Farmer friendly technologies and quality milk production’ in collaboration with IDA, South Zone and Karnataka Milk Federation. Further, we have international collaborative projects with Germany, France and Hungary, Australia and International Livestock Research Institute in which the scientists of the institute get opportunity to exchange ideas on cutting edge research areas in the field of animal nutrition and physiology.

A comprehensive study was conducted to
evaluate the efficiency of nano zinc as feed
supplement on growth, nutrient utilization and
immunity in goats. Nano ZnO (NZn) was
synthesized at our laboratory by chemical method
with an average particle size of 74 nm (Figure 1).
Twenty-four male goats (18.7±0.33 kg) were
randomly divided in to four groups and control
group was fed with only basal diet (concentrate
and finger millet straw @ 50:50). Whereas,
treatment groups were supplemented with
inorganic ZnO 50 mg/kg (IZn-50), nano zinc 50
mg/kg (NZn-50) and 25 mg/kg (NZn-25),
respectively in addition to basal diet. Feeding trial
of 120 days revealed that the average daily gain,
total weight gain and feed conversion ratio were
better (P<0.05) in NZn-25 than control, without
affecting their feed intake. The blood profile
indicated more absorption of zinc (mg/dl) in NZn-
50 group in comparison to IZn-50, NZn-25 and
control. The graded doses of NZn had no
influence on the individual and total volatile fatty
acid profile in goats, but the soluble zinc content
was higher in NZn-50 than NZn-25 and control.
The addition of zinc had no impact on metabolic
hormones (T3 and T4), however increases the level

supplementation of NZn-50 boosted the cell
mediated and humoral immunity which was
confirmed by immunophenotyping. The feeding of
NZn at the rate of 25 and 50 mg/kg improved
sperm motility and velocity in goats (Figure 2).
Further, NZn at the dose of 50 mg/kg as per ICAR
standard promoted growth, FCR, immunity, mineral
retention and sperm motility parameters as
compared to IZn-50 and control. However,
supplementation of nano zinc at 25 mg/kg (half of
ICAR standard) enhanced health status, productive
and reproductive performance of goats as that of
50 mg/kg inorganic ZnO. Therefore, nano zinc is
more effective in augmenting animal health,
productive and reproductive performance at half
the dose of inorganic zinc.
