Grady Nia Project Office phone #: (404) 6162897 http://psychiatry.emory.edu/programsniaproject.htm Nia Newsletter Issue 7 We are pleased to bring you issue seven of the Nia Newsletter, intended to be informative, inspirational, and a source of support for women who have experienced domestic violence and suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, etc. This issue features an interview with a benefactor who generously contributed to the Grady Nia Project during the holidays. It also features a poem written by a Nia client. If you have a book review, story, or poem that you would like to share with the Nia community, please let us know. Personal stories help encourage other women and let them know that they are not alone. Please submit stories to Dr. Nadine Kaslow, Grady Nia Project Director, at [email protected]. Generosity The Grady Nia Project would like to express its sincere appreciation to T.W., a nurse at Emory Crawford Long Hospital who made a generous financial donation to Nia during the holidays. The donation allowed the project to give Nia clients a retail gift card or other gifts for the holidays. The women were very appreciative. Many of the women stated, “This is the only gift I’m getting for Christmas,” or “This is the only gift I’ve gotten this year.” Some of the women with children told Nia team members, “Now I can get something for my kids for Christmas.” The donation by T.W. allowed the Nia clients to have a more meaningful Christmas this year.

Generosity

The  Grady  Nia  Project  would  like  to  express  its  sincere  appreciation  to  T.W.,  a  nurse  at  Emory  Crawford  Long  Hospital  who  made  a  generous  financial  donation  to  Nia  during  the  holidays.

The  Nia  team  was  very  impressed  with  the  generosity  of  this  anonymous  donor  and  wanted  to  interview  her  for  the  newsletter.  More  content  to  remain  in  the  background,  she  kindly  agreed  to  this  interview.    T.W.  stated  that  she  heard  about  the  Grady  Nia  Project  from  Dr.  Kaslow.    She  reported  that  she  is  interested  in  Grady  and  the  issues  that  affect  those  it  serves.  T.W.  stated  that  after  speaking  with  Dr.  Kaslow,  she  learned  that  the  Grady  Nia  Project  is  funded  in  order  to  pay  the  women  who  participate  in  the  study.  However,  T.W.  stated  that  she  was  aware  that  the  study  lacked  the  resources  to  help  for  the  women  in  other  ways.  When  asked  what  made  her  decide  to  contribute  to  the  Grady  Nia  Project,  T.W.  stated,  “I  am  in  the  process  of  changing  church  homes  and  decided  to  direct  my  donations  where  people  could  better  use  them.  It  feels  more  palpable  to  me,  even  though  I  don’t  see  it.”  T.W.  further  added,  “What  you  guys  do  to  stop  the  cycle  of  abuse  so  as  not  to  pass  it  on  to  children  is  great.”  T.W.  was  humbly  moved  by  the  attention  she  received  for  her  donation  to  the  Grady  Nia  Project  and  expressed  joy  with  being  able  to  help  others.  The  Nia  team  and  its  clients  say  “THANKS  T.W.!”      The  Nia  Project  provides  toiletries,  feminine  products,  snacks,  and  journals  to  our  clients.  We  provide  these  services  through  the  generous  donations  of  donors  like  T.W.  and  Nia  team  members  who  purchase  these  products  for  the  clients.  The  Nia  clients  are  very  appreciative  of  this  service  we  provide  to  them  and  many  would  be  unable  to  purchase  these  supplies  themselves.  If  you  would  like  to  make  a  tax-‐deductible  donation  to  the  Grady  Nia  Project,  please  call  the  Nia  office  at  404-‐616-‐2897,  or  contact  Dr.  Nadine  Kaslow  at  [email protected].
