Bill had broken all of the scoring marks in the tournament’s first two days and his third round 64 would stand as an NFCC course record which was to last 10 years. Harvey had played the course with the swashbuckling bra- vado of a Mississippi riverboat gambler. He also proved him- self an amiable, sociable fellow not averse to staying up late for a party. But Brother Bill was in trouble for most of the final round at Lewiston Heights. He couldn’t get a putt of any length to go in the hole and was eventually caught by husky Charlie Smith, a two-time Walker Cupper from Gastonia, NC. After 72-holes, Harvey and Smith were all even at 274, six strokes under par and seven strokes under the tour- nament record set the prior year by Ed Tutwiler. The first playoff in Porter Cup history would be needed to determine the Champion. Harvey would outlast Smith in the resulting duel by scoring a par-4 on the 459-yard fifth extra hole, their 77 th of the tournament. CHIP SHOT... Jack Nicklaus once said this about John Konsek, “Had John turned pro instead of pursuing a career in medicine, he definitely would be in the Hall of Fame by now.
