Message from the President and the Chair

This year, as we celebrate 24 years of providing award-winning leadership programs for Latinas, we reflect on what we’ve accomplished, prepare to continue to crack the glass ceiling for Latinas and reaffirm our commitment to shaping the next generation of American leaders.

We’ve accomplished so much with your support.

2010 marked the launch of our new program targeting nonprofit Latina leaders, Advancing Latina Leaders in Nonprofits program (ALL IN) designed to help Latinas 25-34 years of age develop their leadership and management skills, find their voices as effective community leaders, and build external networks to support their continued professional and personal growth. The women participated in an eight day training program at Georgetown University‘s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership in the nation’s capital where they earned a certificate in nonprofit management; and attended two exclusive webinars to complete the program. The 22 fellows, from 14 different states, reconvened during the 2010 Executive Training Conference in November held in Miami, Florida.

The Executive Leadership Program (ELP) brought together 20 Latinas from 12 different states to complete a rigorous curriculum over a nine month period in four separate locations: California, Havard University, Center for Creative Leadership and Washington, D.C. The 2010 fellows raised a record-setting $35,000. Fund raising efforts included special events such as Inspirational Latinas Nights held in eight different cities across the country.

Averaging 150 viewers for each of the nine sessions, the Webinar series continued to deliver lunch-time, desk top training seminars. Training topics spanned the range of personal and professional development.

Latinas Learning to Lead (LLL) brought together 22 Latinas from 13 states and 21 universities for an eight day leadership training program in the nation’s capital. Highlighting the week was living in “A Day in the Life of a Congressional Member” and participating in non-traditional activities such as changing the oil on a car and playing tackle football.

Miami, Florida was the site of our Annual Executive Leadership Conference and Mujer Awards Gala, once again providing leadership development training led by top-level Latinas from across the country.

NHLI acknowledges the support received from corporate partners, the work of the Board of Directors, the dedication of the NHLI staff and alumnae from the ELP, ALL IN, and LLL programs. Join us in pledging to be part of the future success of NHLI. Si se puede for Latinas!

Executive Leadership ProgramGraduating 20 impressive Latina leaders from 12 states, the Executive Leadership Program (ELP) had an amazing 23rd year. After a week of self-reflection and working on communication skills in San Juan Bautista, CA, the women completed prestigious week-long trainings at the Kennedy School at Harvard University and the Center for Creative Leadership before ending their ELP experience with policy briefings in Washington, DC. While the program curriculum stayed mostly the same, the women set a new record for fellow-fundraising, raising more than $35,000 for NHLI through events such as the Inspirational Latinas Nights held in eight different cities.

I have discovered a side of me that I always knew was there but did not acknowledge due to fear. I stand proud to be an immigrant and a community leader. Now, I walk and dress in a different way. The four weeks changed my life and my career. Helen Arteaga Landaverde, 2010 Fellow.

Latinas Learning to Lead ProgramTeaching young Latinas “ to dream big and be persistent,” as participant Cruz Olivia Gallegos-Huitron described it, the Latinas Learning to Lead Program fostered the leadership skills of 22 outstanding Latinas from 13 states and 21 universities during an eight-day leadership training in Washington, DC. They lived “A Day in The Life of a Congressional Member,” learned financial literacy and public speaking and even participated in “non-traditional” activities for females, like playing tackle football and changing a car’s oil and tires. Most importantly, the experience opened up a network of Latina role models for these women.

I gained a sisterhood of professionals I never thought was possible to attain with Latinas like myself... I know I can reach out to anyone we’ve met to seek counsel and advice in career decisions. Candis Nikolic, 2010 Fellow.

Advancing Latina Leaders in NonprofitsNHLI launched the nation’s first leadership training program for emerging Latina nonprofit leaders. The Advancing Latinas Leaders in Nonprofits program was designed to help Latinas 24 -34 years of age develop their leadership and management skills, find their voices as effective community leaders, and build external networks to support their continued professional and personal growth. After an eight-day training in the nation’s capitol in which the women earned a certificate from Georgetown University’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership and two exclusive webinars, the 22 Fellows from 14 states reconvened for a one-day Nonprofit Institute in November in conjunction with the 2010 Executive Leadership Training Conference.

Being part of NHLI’s ALL IN program was truly transformational. The training provided me with great insight about myself and managerial styles that will allow me to grow as a leader in my nonprofit and my community. [Additionally, the] program instantly provided me with a network of hermanas that I know I can count on to support me in my future endeavors. Mareth Flores, 2010 Fellow.

Latina Empowerment Conferences & WebinarsBringing NHLI trainings to Charlotte, North Carolina, and Portland, Oregon for the first time, NHLI trained over 800 participants across the country during its one-day Latina Empowerment Conferences (LECs) in 2010. LECs also took place in Fort Worth, TX; New York City, NY; and Denver, CO between March and August 2010.

For those needing a cure to the mid-day blues, NHLI’s webinar series provided lunch-time access to trainings from the comfort of people’s own desks, for an average of 150 viewers each time. With topics ranging from people-centered leadership to financial literacy, from Latina entrepreneurs to time management, the nine webinars supported both personal and professional growth for the over 700 individuals who logged on to watch. As one participant put it, “The speakers were great, knowledgeable and entertaining, and gave me the tools to be confident moving forward in my career.
