“When you enter the land which I am giving to you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the first sheaf of your harvest to the priest…” (Lev. 23:9). Kibbutz celebrations originated in the 1920s and 1930s as an attempt to recapture the "ancient Hebrew" – mainly the agricultural – character of Jewish holidays. An omer festival based on biblical and mishnaic sources was inaugurated, symbolizing the harvesting of the first ripe barley grain. On the eve of the first day of Passover, kibbutz members and their children formed a procession and went singing and dancing to the fields. A number of ears of grain were ceremonially cut, to be placed in the communal dining hall as part of the Passover decorations.

From the Rabbi: Dear NHC friends,

As you know, I have been very concerned about the education of children in East Ramapo, where private school parents have taken over the public school board and, according to a state report, "recklessly mismanaged" the district and has diverted funds to private schools.

The state can get involved if a new bill passes the Legislature. This would help bring "justice for all".

Therefore, I ask that you add your support and please sign on to the petition here: www.strongeastramapo.org.

B'Shalom, Rabbi Paul Kurland [email protected]

We invite you to participate with us in these “walks” in support of fellow NHC congregants:

From the Co-Presidents:

One year ago, our congregation made the bold decision to eliminate mandatory dues. We were uncertain as to how everyone would respond but optimistic that our congregants would support the new structure at Nanuet Hebrew Center to the best of their ability. Fast forward one year and we now know that moving to a voluntary Self-Directed Pledge system has proven to be the right decision. Together, we are helping making Judaism more accessible to everyone.

Within the next few days, you will be receiving a more detailed update from us, and asking for your self-directed (voluntary) commitment for the upcoming fiscal year.

We hope you will consider a pledge of at least the same amount as last year. And, if you are able, we ask that you please consider an increase in your pledge of perhaps 10% or more. Your continued support to NHC is essential for us to maintain and manage our synagogue’s operations. We can’t thank you enough for your continued support and participation.

March was another exciting and meaningful month at NHC, with something for virtually all ages and interest. In addition to our daily minyans and services, we had lively Purim celebrations (including Megillah reading, a special Pre-K – 3rd grade program, carnival and two performances of the Purim Spiel), fundraiser art auction, GALIM, USY and Kadima programs, Tot Shabbat, “Pre Passover” Mommy and Me Program, an inspiring talk by Gil Tamary (Washington Bureau Chief for Israel’s Channel 10 News; sponsored by the Rockland Federation), and an equally wonderful interactive discussion with Timna Mekaiten (Rockland Federation’s Community Shlicha / Israel Emissary) on recent American / Israel relationships, held at Rabbi’s adult study class.

Looking forward, the following are a few upcoming save-the-dates. Details on these events, and more, are found in our weekly announcements, flyers at NHC and in the Bulletin, website (www.nanuethc.org) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nanuethc):

Sunday, April 4th: 6th Annual, 2nd Night of Passover Family Friendly Community Seder. Open to the Community; free for everyone under 21; only $25 for adults 21 and over. (Gather at 8:15pm.)

Sunday, April 12th: NHC’s 75th Anniversary Journal Event and Reception (11am at the Rockleigh Country Club). In addition to celebrating our rich history and founding and longtime families, we will be honoring Linda Russin as recipient of the Stanley Blumenthal Community Service Award. We hope you will pay tribute to NHC and our honoree with an event or journal ad sponsorship, as well as joining us at the celebration!

Sunday, April 26th: NHC’s Jeff Schragenheim will be honored at Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs’ Man of the Year Awards Brunch!

Tuesday, April 28th: NHC’s Ellen Rifken will be honored by Women’s League for Conservative Judaism at their Torah Fund Dinner!

Sunday, May 17th: Designer Handbag Bingo comes to NHC!!!

L’Shalom, and wishing you a Chag Pesach Sameach (Happy Passover), Bruce Pollack and Adam Sayer, Co-Presidents

ANTISEMITISM

John H. Lang Toward the end of last year the Rockland Holocaust Center sponsored a talk on the rising tide of antisemitism by Dr. Deborah Lipstadt. Unfortunately, she shed no new information on the subject other than saying what we already knew, that today’s antisemitism is not state sponsored. Her talk was akin to driving past a burning building and saying “look, there’s a house on fire.” What was not said was, who the perpetrators of these vicious acts were. For years now, Western Europe and Scandinavia, have experienced a growing Muslim population. In many of these lands their population has reached critical mass. Therefore it should come as no surprise that the hatred for Jews and Israel has exploded into violence. Unlike the Shoah, this Islamic fanaticism against us is like a hydra. You never know where or when the next despicable act will take place. By now we certainly know that Jews are not the only targets. The Christian community has paid a heavy price to practice their religion. Every American Jew should be outraged by our President saying that the attack and murder of French Jews at the Kosher deli was a “random act against a bunch of folks in a deli in Paris.” Likewise the gruesome beheading of Coptic Christians in Libya was described as “Egyptian citizens.” The enemy we face is Islamic Extremism. I am reminded of the time during late 1940 when I arrived in America. Jews generally did not want to hear or believe what was going on in Europe. So, I ask in these vicious times, where are the voices within our community and its leaders? The sounds of silence are deafening.

Sisterhood Update Lisa Green

As many of you already know, my Co-President Renee Leffler is relocating and is therefore resigning from the presidency. We all wish Renee well in her move, and thank her for all the hard work she did for Sisterhood. Purim is always a wonderful time at the synagogue. It is so nice to see the little ones dress up, and hear everyone make noise to drown out Haman’s name. In recent years we have put on a Purim Shpiel, and I have to thank Mindy Sayer for all her hard work. Everyone did a fabulous job in the Shpiel, and it seemed that the entire cast enjoyed the experience. With Purim Sisterhood had its annual Mischloach Manot fundraiser. This year we had more people participate than ever. One reason is the Happy Purim program we tried out. Thank you Helene Kornstein for researching and implementing the program. Also thank you to Sheila Reiter, Roz Hurwitz, Naomi Newman, Renee Schnurr, Ilse Spatz, and Gail Kaiser. Mischloach Manot fundraiser takes a lot of hard work, and I am glad the members of Sisterhood are always up to the challenge. Also, thank you to all the volunteers that helped pack the purim bags and deliver them. We couldn’t have done it without you. Sisterhood had a busy winter. We had a pottery painting program, and a cake decorating program led by our very own Nathan Gross. We also had a wonderful sisterhood Shabbat followed by a full day of activities for the Shabbat experience. Thank you so much to Nathan Gross, Joan Bash, Karen Schragenheim, and Mindy Sayer. We are looking into a painting program in the spring. Keep a lookout for the flyer.

Sisterhood of the Nanuet Hebrew Center

Book Discussion Group We all agreed that Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali was not great literature. However, this book sparked one of our most interesting discussions. It is the autobiography of a Somali woman whose arduous journey from the land of her birth to a life in the Netherlands is filled with horrendous experiences. As a Muslim woman, she grows up regarded as a second-class citizen. In addition, the family is poor, her father is imprisoned and the family has “one foot in the remote past and the other in the modern world.” An enforced marriage pushes her over the edge and she confronts her doubts about her life and her religion. Our group discussed the radical differences between the cultures of East and West. How can we ever come to terms with the differences? How does this affect the prospects of peace in Israel? How will this affect the future of our country ? We saw a direct connection with the book and in events happening today. The book produced much food for thought and certainly sparked a lively discussion. Please join us Wednesday, May 13 as we discuss A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith. Marilyn Brenner

Report on Purim Fundraiser

This year's Purim Fundraiser was very successful. Many people played an integral role insuring that all aspects needed to coordinate every necessary part of this large project came to fruition. Please know that Lisa Green, Roz Hurwitz, Gail Kaiser, Sheila Reiter and Ilse Spatz helped make everything work smoothly from collecting monies, compiling lists of names and addresses on the computer to writing out and planning delivery routes. Kari and Missy, our wonderful staff members also helped insure the best possible outcome for our Purim holiday celebration.

Everything went smoothly on Feb. 22, 2015 because of all the volunteers, too many to mention, that helped us on the assembly line and helped fill each and every bag. We could not have done it without you. On behalf of Sisterhood, we would like to wish you a happy Purim celebration. We hope we brought a festive mood to your home for the holiday and of course we especially hope that you all enjoyed the Humantaschen. Helen Kornstein, Naomi Newman and Renee Schnur

Remembering Passover

Marilyn Brenner

My earliest memory of Passover is a navy blue spring coat. As a child, I got a new navy blue spring coat every Passover. I wore it to the Seders no matter what the weather was (snowy or Miami-like). I also got new shoes and a new dress. They varied in style from year to year, but the navy blue spring coat was a constant.

Although, looking back, I realize that my mother must have worked very hard to prepare for the holiday, I don’t remember her seeming rushed or harried. Cleaning the house was done constantly, so I don’t think the Pesadik cleaning was a great chore. Of course, all the cooking had to be done at the last minute when the house was “kasher l’Pesach.” I loved our Passover dishes and looked forward to seeing them every year. The white butter dish decorated with red horses was a favorite.

The Seders were spent with my paternal grandparents where Zeidy would drone on (what seemed to me) in an endless reading of the Maxwell House Hagaddah. Before the Seder began, Zeidy would have a glass of slivovitz. As a child, I thought that this must be a very potent drink available only to old grandfathers. Later on, I learned that it is a plum brandy. I think some people actually drink it today.

The Pesadik food seemed very exotic—matzoh brie, hard-boiled eggs in salt water, Mom’s delicious home-made gefilte fish. However, the most delicious thing she served on the holiday was a honey-walnut-farfel concoction. She would boil this all together and then spill it on a large platter. When it cooled and hardened, we would scoop it up with a large spoon.

As a young child, I think that the thing that impressed me most about Passover was not the things we had, but the things we could not have. Of course, there was no bread or bread products. But there was also no gum, potato chips, ice-cream and any number of foods that we could have on non-holiday times. Did we talk about missing these things? Sure! But they did make the holiday special in a way that probably doesn’t exist for today’s kids. They can have their dry-cereal for breakfast, have a sandwich on a Passover roll for lunch, and have ice-cream for dessert for dinner. All this and still observe the holiday.

I wonder if the present generation will have the same warm feelings about Passover as my childhood memories generate in me. Maybe they will remember Grandma Marilyn’s chicken soup and matzoh balls fondly and wonder what Holiday memories they can produce for their own grandchildren.

USY / Kadima News As March gives way to April, and winter to spring, NHC's Youth looked toward both the past and future. In March, we continued our traditions of the Purim carnival and teen congregation, and also looked ahead to next year as we hosted our first pre-Kadima event for the fifth graders. In the spirit of celebrating the old and the new, the pre-Kadima attendees were treated to pizza bagels and the remake of the 1980s classic, The Karate Kid. To celebrate Passover, USY, Kadima, and Pre-Kadima also hosted a dessert bake off as well. For April, we have chapter and regional events planned as well. We are looking forward to capitalizing on the coming of spring, as many have requested an outdoor games event, which we hope to have. Stay tuned for other events and announcements as well. In Our Mailbox

Dear NHC Family: Thank you all for all the leagrams for my birthday. I really appreciate them and you. Claire Dear NHC Family, Thank you for all the special birthday wishes! It is nice to know so many people are thinking of me. Kari   Dear Rabbi Kurland, I’ve just learned of your thoughtful contribution to the American Society for Yad Vashem and I want to thank you so very much. The vital importance of keeping the memory of the Shoah alive for generations to come is very clear. Yad Vashem makes sure that we all remember. Thank you again for your commitment to the American Society for Yad Vashem. Sincerely, Leonard Wilf Chairman Frances Melamed wishes to thank the many congregants who sent their good wishes for her birthday. It was most gratifying to hear from so many. You are all in my heart. Thanks again. Dear friends, Thank you so much for your support of People to People as we work to feed Rockland’s hungry. Your donation for People to People during the year of 2014 resulted in 136 pounds of food donated to our food pantry. The federal government values every pound of food at $2.70 cents so your donation to People to People is valued at $367.20. In 2008, when I first became Executive Director, People to People distributed $526,000 worth of food; last year, we distributed $1,703,257 worth of food. Last year, People to People distributed nearly 15,157 monthly food packages; that’s up from the nearly 7,000 households that received food in 2008. Thanks to food donations such as yours, People to People is able to provide significantly more than the nine meals per week suggested by the Regional Food Bank to our struggling neighbors in needs Thanks to you and your efforts on behalf of People to People, we are able to provide more food to struggling Rocklanders. And, for that, we are so very grateful to you. Again, thank you so very much. With all my heart, Diane Serratore Executive Director

Dear Rabbi Kurland, Thank you for your contribution to The Koby Mandell Foundation. Your support helps us provide programs that encourage those struck by the tragedy of terror and other trauma to cope with their pain and sorrow, and to heal. Our programs use a unique combination of fun, formal and informal therapy, and community building to foster an environment of emotional support. Participants learn to draw strength from each other and create long-lasting bonds of friendship and a community of survivors. Thank you again for your partnership and generosity. Sincerely Yours, Rabbi Seth Mandell President of the Board Dear Rabbi Paul, On behalf of The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, we would like to thank you for your recent donation to the USCJ Sprit Series Campaign. Without your support, we could not renew our commitment to formal and informal Jewish education experiences through our Kehillot that transform the lives of youth and seniors alike, and reaffirm our commitment to Israel. We want to thank you for your compassion and wish you well. Sincerely, Jonathan Boiskin Chief Development Officer

2015 Purim Carnival

As we look forward to Passover, I want to take a look back to Purim and once again thank everyone for their participation in NHC's Youth led Purim Carnival. As you know, it is the largest and most important fundraiser of the year for our USY and Kadima groups and an annual highlight that our Hebrew School children look forward to. It was wonderful to see the room filled with kids laughing and smiling as they competed in GaGa, generously donated by Gate Hill Day Camp, eating hot dogs and chicken nuggets prepared by our expert chefs, redeeming their tickets for prizes arranged by our Prize Team, playing homemade games run by our older Kadima and USY members or just hanging around talking with friends. Thank you to our sponsors who generously donated services, gift cards or cash: Gate Hill Day Camp, Alex Gromack, Dukes of Oil, Alisa Silverberg, Dr. Sobler, Shirley Lasker, 16 Handles and Stop and Shop of New City. Of course the carnival would not be what is it without the team of adult volunteers who come together to make it happen. We are always looking for new ideas and people to help implement them. If interested in joining, please leave a message with Kari in the office. Happy Passover.

Tzedakah/vesm

Tzedakah received and recorded by the 10th of the month or the first business day after, will be acknowledged on these pages. If the office is closed because of holidays falling on these days, only donations received before the holiday will appear. Please also note that acknowledgment or lack thereof on these pages

does not constitute an official receipt of your donation by the shul. In the event that acknowledgment of your donation does not appear, please let the synagogue office know and we will print it in the next issue of the Bulletin.

Planning Ahead Now is the time to start the planning that enhances the work of the congregation by raising the necessary funds so dues need not be raised. Our ongoing fundraisers include the Rabbi's Walk and the Tree of Life. To reserve a brick on the Rabbi’s Walk or reserve a stone or a leaf on the Tree of Life, call Estelle Eisenkraft in care of the office at 845-708-9181.
