By Jim Kasuba The News-Herald WYANDOTTE  — Altho ugh a p opular downtown restaurant and nightclub was destroyed in a fire Sunday night, it could have been worse. A lot worse. City officials are credit- ing strong fire codes and the success of mutual aid among communities for saving a block of buildings on Biddle Av enue between Elm and Oak from a fire that gutted Lions & Tigers & Beers, but caused just mini- mal damage to neighboring businesses. Jeffrey Carley , who took over the fire chief’s position this year, had been tested by several major house fires that sprang up over three weeks, but so far in his brief tenure in the department’s top position he had not witnessed a fire of the magnitude that broke out at 2929 Biddle Ave. just before 7 p.m. Carley was nowhere near the city when the fire erupted at the popular restaurant and sports bar. He was on his way home from Kalamazoo, where he had attended a gradua- tion party. Michael Brandt, the department’s senior cap- tain, oversaw operations until Carley arrived at about 9:45 p.m. Firefighting duties were coordinated by Brandt, with the assistance of Trenton Fire Chief Bruce V ick, coordina- tor of Downriver Mutual Aid. It took the resources of about 100 firefighters from more than a half-dozen communities at least eight hours to put out the fire that filled downtown with smoke throughout the night and early morning. Patrol Officer Vincent Weir was the first to respond to a residence in the 1500 bloc k of Garfield Av enue. The girl was breathing by the time Fire Department paramedics arrived moments later . The girl was taken to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detr oit, where she was held over- night for observation. Police Chie f Thomas Karnes said the girl was on a flotation device in a backyard pool, with other children and her mother nearby . He add ed that i t is not clear if she was secured or how she fell into the water. “That will be looked at as we proceed on,” he said. “As a reminder to all parents ... it only takes a fraction of a second for a child to wind up at the bottom of the pool.” Police will examine the case for any possible child neglect, he said, but did not say if there was any evidence to indicate that was the case. Water can be a danger to children in numerous places, he said, including small ponds in backyards or even a five- gallon bucket. “You hav e to be mind- ful of where kids are at all times and know these things are hazards for them,” Karnes said. He said the quick response averted tragedy for the family. “Of all the things tha t officers are involved in … there’s nothing that will get them moving faster than a child not breath- ing,” Karnes said.
