Good-sounding Benefits for room acoustic applications

Aesthetic Acoustics

TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO combine acoustics and aesthetics in the best possible way. The aesthetically

attractive acoustic surfaces offer high sound absorption and the possibility of varying the absorption without

changing the surface appearance.

TOPAKUSTIK planks permit unlimited sequencing and make a joint-free ceiling and wall design possible.

And don’t forget the importance of wood as an acoustic design material. Wood radiates an atmosphere and

warmth second to none. TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO provide aesthetics and acoustics.

Harmony in Variations

Many TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO types are available. These can be provided with all the customary wood

veneers, all colors based on RAL or NCS and various melamine coatings (eco-collection). This broad spec-

trum of variations is sure to meet all individual décor requirements.

TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO cores are produced in MDF, fire-retardant MDF or non-combustible gypsum, de-

pending upon the fire safety specifications required.

Custom Production

TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO are custom produced in our Lungern, Switzerland factory specifically for each

order. This enables production of all formats and sizes to match your building project. The panel joints can

match the architectural installation grid spacing and a wide variety of veneers can match existing colors and

textures. A wide variety of panel edge conditions is also available.

Overture to Finale

From planning to installation, we support you with extensive services and selection.

To help you make the correct choice, we provide product samples and absorption coefficients (to ISO 354) for

all our products. For planning purposes, you will find a great deal of useful information in this brochure. Natu-

rally, our specialists are also at your disposal – from planning to installation. The installation itself is done by

the approved contractor.

Trend-setting ...

TOPAKUSTIK was developed in 1991 and has successfully been used in numerous projects since then. Groo-

ves on the visible side – perforation on the rear – a simple, refined idea, which has now become the leading

acoustic system made of wood.

n’H Akustik + Design AG has also helped conventional perforated panels to gain an attractive appearance with

the dual-diameter hole pattern (T-drilling).

Innovation is one thing, quality with regard to the material and service another. Both are guaranteed by the

qualified and highly capable n’H team from Lungern – from the heart of Switzerland.

Planks 128 mm in widthThanks to the precise tongue and groove connection, planks result in an at-

tractive surface with a joint-free effect, because the connecting joint mat-

ches the dimension of the grooves. The planks permit simple and flexible

assembly. They can be installed by stapling to a nailing strip or clamping to

a T-bar with Topakustik clips. (Assembly p. 19)

Panels from 300 mm to 1200 mm in widthPanels are used for removable or fixed ceilings and walls with visible joints.

Panels can be provided with a number of differing edges (p. 18) and are

also suited for cabinet fronts and room dividers.

T-Perforation: For high absorption

in the low to medium frequency range.

The high absorption in the low-frequency

range is based on the combination of

small holes on the visible side and larger

holes on the rear.

M-Perforation: For high absorption

in the medium to high frequency range.

TOPAKUSTIK products with M-Perforation

are suited for applications in which the

reverberation time is to be lowered

across a broad frequency band.

Reflectors: TOPAKUSTIK products

can also be used as reflectors by elimi-

nating the perforations on the rear sur-

face. The absorption figures are thus

equivalent to those of a standard reflec-

ting panel.

The refined acoustic system for wall and ceiling finishes. Many different

groove patterns are available. Narrow spaced grooves appear as a textured

surface (4/4, 5/3, 6/2, 9/2) – wider spaced grooves can be seen individually by

the eyes (12/4, 13/3, 14/2, 28/4)*. Thanks to the rear perforation pattern, the

core panel retains its stability. For example, cut-outs are possible everywhere.

The Acoustic System

All TOPAKUSTIK types are available with M and T perforations on the rear. This makes it possible for acousticians to match the TOPAKUSTIK surfa-

ce treatment with the required absorption. The absorption coefficients stated in this brochure were measured according to the ISO 354 standard

and are set up as described above. Additional absorption coefficients with other cavity depths and other porous materials in the air cavity (e.g. only

fleece, melamine resin foam, fiberglass, etc.) are listed in the TOPAKUSTIK / TOPPERFO sound absorption document (p. 23).

Measured according to ISO 354:

Please note: walls finished with lighter veneers (maple, birch) or lighter paint

(white) can because of the light-dark-contrast from surface to grooves create a

visually distrubing effect. We recommend using the TOPAKUSTIK designs with

2 mm wide groove e.g. type 6/2, 9/2 or 14/2 and/or using darker veneers or

darker paint colours.

TOPPERFO are perforated acoustic panels individually produced specifi-

cally for each project. Various panel sizes and hole diameters are availa-

ble for selection. TOPPERFO-T and TOPPERFO-Clou, developed by n’H,

are discreet in their appearance and simultaneously very effective in

sound absorption thanks to the small hole diameters. TOPPERFO panels

can be provided with various edge designs.

T-Perforation: For high absorption

in the low to medium frequency range.

The high absorption in the low-frequency

range is based on the combination of

small diameter holes on the visible side

and larger diameter holes on the rear.

The small perforations present an

aesthetic surface suited for wall finishes.

M-Perforation: For high absorption

in the medium to high frequency range.

The absorption depends on the percent

open area, the depth of the rear air cavi-

ty between the acoustic elements and

the ceiling or wall and the porous ab-

sorption in the cavity.

Reflectors: TOPPERFO products

can also be used as reflectors by elimi-

nating the perforations on the rear sur-

face. The absorption figures are thus

equivalent to those of a standard reflec-

ting panel.

To obtain a uniform distance of 16 mm or 20 mm between perforations and between the last

perforation and the edge of the panel, the center-to-center mounting grid dimension (inclu-

ding a joint separation of at least 3 mm for thermal expansion) must be divisible by 16 mm

or 20 mm.

Perforation dimensions and possibilities

The Acoustic System

All TOPPERFO types are available with M and T perforations on the rear. This makes it possible for acousticians to match the TOPPERFO surface

treatment with the required absorption. The absorption coefficients stated in this brochure were measured according to the ISO 354 standard as

described above. Additional absorption coefficients with other porous materials in the air cavity (e.g. only fleece, melamine resin foam, fiberglass,

etc.) are listed in the TOPAKUSTIK / TOPPERFO sound absorption document (p. 23).

TOPPERFO Clou for walls, ceilings and doors

The fine Clou perforation in an 8 mm grid with a diameter of only 1.2 mm can

hardly be seen at a distance. The wooden texture is therefore completely re-

tained in its natural beauty. TOPPERFO-Clou has excellent acoustic absorp-

tion coefficients in the low to middle frequency range. It is therefore ideally

suited for lecture rooms and auditoriums where low frequency control is

needed.

Acrylic absorber MPA

The micro-perforated absorbers (MPA) of artificial glass (thickness up to

5 mm) absorb sound without a mineral wool layer or fleece lamination, thus

permitting new design solutions. The MPA produced by n’H Akustik + Design

AG in coordination with Fraunhofer-Institut, Stuttgart (patent owner) excel

through high precision and a uniform perforation appearance.

TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO products are manufactured from medium density fiberboard

(MDF) as a standard. Thanks to the homogeneous structure, MDF is is well suited for this

application. MDF panels are produced from soft and hard wood fibers with added binding

agents. Only panels meeting the international emission values E1 are processed.

If there are flame spread and smoke developed requirements, special core panels are used:

Core panels with natural varnishing: All the core panels are industrially

manufactured. Color differences, even within one production batch, cannot be avoided.

The application of the protective varnish can make these differences even more apparent.

Expansion and Contraction of the core materials: Wooden materials are hygroscopic and have a balancing effect on the relative humidity of the room. Changing room humidity also causes the

shrinkage and expansion of wooden materials.

In air conditioned rooms the panel and plank dimensions can change by +/- 1 mm per 1000 mm. In non air conditioned rooms this can increase to

+/- 2mm per 1000 mm. Therefore panels and planks should be separated with joints of 3mm to 6mm depending on their size. The installation should

only be made when the normal operating humidity and temperature conditions are present. After delivery and unloading the plastic transport covering

should be removed and the panels or planks left to acclimatize for 3-4 days prior to starting installation.

The formats stated above

refer to the untreated panel

formats. For the maximum

possible TOPAKUSTIK and

TOPPERFO formats, please

consult the dimension tables

for the various types.

For Example: Black MDF The MDF is black or colored throughout and offers many interesting possibilites. For example,

black or colored Topperfo contrasts well with wood veneer Topakustik planks or panels.

TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO products are also available

in three attractive melamine coatings. All the necessary

information can be found in the dimension tables of the

various TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO types.

eco plus collection: Further melamine finishes for

quantities above 150 m2 upon request.

HPL coating: All customary HPL coatings are possi-

ble. Contact factory for details.

Natural wood varnishes:The TOPAKUSTIK products are veneered in all customary types of wood. The varnishes are processed for each order in order to obtain the

most even appearance possible for color and pattern. Further, the veneer appearance is influenced by the cut and the composition of the

veneers. For example, TOPAKUSTIK planks are, as a rule, provided with the straightest and plainest rift veneers possible. For TOPAKUSTIK

and TOPPERFO panels, patterned veneers will be cut to match the width of the panels. Since wood is a natural product, the matching of the

veneer must be done in connection with each individual order.

Please note: Book matched quarter cut veneers may reflect light differently from neighbouring bands of veneer leaf. This may result in a

noticeable colour variation (light-dark stripe effect) in some species or fitches.

The illustrations below show types of wood frequently used for ceiling and wall coatings.

The lengths stated show you limitations with regard to the maximum lengths. Ideal lengths (with regard to a wider selection of veneers) are

shorter as a matter of principle. The illustrations cannot act as a reference, either for the color or for the patterning.

A standard or specified high-quality varnish is provided on all orders. Light kinds of wood such as maple or birch are varnished with a slight

lightening effect as a matter of principle.

AUM = lightening, gloss varnish

Finishes

Color varnishing according to RAL or NCS standardsAll colors shall be specified according to RAL or NCS standards. The application is done with the latest generation spray robotics, providing a

guaranteed even application. Due to the grooves and bores of the products, the color appearance is different from that on smooth surfaces. If

TOPAKUSTIK products are finished by the client, please remember that an even paint application, even in the grooves, is absolutely necessary

for a good final result.

WEM= white matte finish (Standard = RAL 9010)

FAM = colored matte finish

Longitudinal edges with tongue and groove

If requested with groove for fitting with

mounting clip.

Transverse edges are cut cleanly and at a

90 degree angle. When planks of multiple

lengths are requested, the perforations

are visible on the front edge.

If requested, perforations on the transver-

se edges are set back. Edge varnished.

The rear stress relief grooves are neces-

sary for stability and are visible.

If requested, the first and last plank may

have a visible edge without tongue or

groove. It may also be veneered and var-

nished.

Inserts:Inserts for lighting or other installations

can be added in multiples of 2 or 3

128 mm plank widths (256 or 384 mm).

These inserts are provided with tongue

and groove parallel to the planks and can

therefore be integrated into the TOP-

AKUSTIK system without problems.

Hooks:Ceiling and wall hooks are available for

pictures and other decorative objects.

They are load-bearing up to 3 kg (6.6 lbs)

for TOPAKUSTIK products with 3 or 4 mm

slots and up to about 2 kg (4.4 lbs) for

TOPAKUSTIK products with 2 mm grooves.

TOPAKUSTIK panelsEdge details:

The front edges of the TOPAKUSTIK planks are supplied with a clean 90 degree angle cut as a standard. The length tolerance amounts to +/– 2 mm.

If requested, the planks can be supplied to a "fixed” dimension with a reduced tolerance of approx. +/- 0.25mm per m1.

Please note: by grooving and perforating, the surface area is increased by a factor of two or three, depending upon the design. In variable room

humidity conditons, the dimensions can therefore change very quickly. (see p.16 – material expansion

TOPAKUSTIK planks(For more information consult the TOPAKUSTIK assembly manual)

Mounting on wooden Battens: The TOPAKUSTIK planks are installed like conventional

tongue and groove strips. The important thing is that the compressed air pressure used for the nailing

or stapling gun is set precisely, so the staples do not protrude in the groove or penetrate too deeply.

Mounting on Metal Ceiling Grids: The TOPAKUSTIK plank is fitted to the suspended T-bar

rail with special mounting clips. This form of assembly is ideal for non-flammable ceiling finishes.

TOPAKUSTIK panels(For more information consult the TOPAKUSTIK assembly manual)

Z-System: Every other panel is inserted and can easily be removed by lifting. This system is sui-

table for all ceilings.

G-System: Each panel is easy to remove by lifting. This system is suited for panels up to about

500 mm in width.

Offset joints:The installation with offset joints permits a

slight material expansion without it beco-

ming visible. In combination with joint

widths of about 3 mm, a clear and tidy ap-

pearance of the joints result.

Formed Shapes

For ceiling clouds, curved walls and other shapes TOPAKUSTIK

and TOPPERFO elements can be used for shaped wall and ceiling

finishes without significant additional effort. For radii above 10

meters, the TOPAKUSTIK planks are assembled on the round

sub-construction in a segmented way. For smaller radii, the

planks or panels can be made flexible by deeper relief grooving

on the rear side. In this way, the panels can simply be adapted

to the curved sub-construction. Radius > 3 m Radius > 8 m

Type SW cabinet doors: For even hig-

her sound absorption, the cabinet doors are

constructed as a sandwich with a sound-ab-

sorbing insert and with a perforated cover.

The perforated cover is also set back by the

dimension of the hinges and door knobs.

Duplex cupboard doors: These have

invisible, integrated absorptive panels sha-

ring the same absorptive values as the SW

model. Duplex is particularly suited to large

hinged or sliding doors.

Cabinet fronts

Cabinet fronts or rear walls of cabinets can be used ideally as sound absorbers.

The following products have particularly proven their usefulness: TOPAKUSTIK 14/2, 9/2, 6/2, TOPPERFO-T and Clou.

Type RK cabinet doors: In interaction

with the fleece attached to the inside (RK

280), the acoustic surface ensures an ab-

sorption across the entire frequency band.

The fleece developed by n’H is tear-proof

and set back from the hinges and door

knobs.

Sports halls

Wall and ceiling finishes are subjected to high impacts in sports halls. TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO finishes, in combination with the sub-construc-

tion systems specifically developed for sports venues, fulfil the high requirements with regard to mechanical impact and room acoustics in an opti-

mal way.

Various TOPAKUSTIK and TOPPERFO products have been tested and certified to DIN 18 032 part 3 by the Otto-Graf Institute of Stuttgart University.

• Certificate 46/32676 Ball-throwing safety TOPAKUSTIK Typ 28/4

Swimming pools

For acoustic finishes in high humidity rooms, requirements corresponding to the application are to be fulfilled, e.g.:

• Ceilings and walls constructed flawlessly as regards construction physics

• Rear ventilation of wall and ceiling finish

• Use of corrosion-proof sub-construction materials

• Use of specific, moisture-resistant core panels in production

• Use of specific varnishes or impregnations

• Consideration of the (extraordinary) shrinkage and swelling properties of the core panels
