(SBHS) Chieftains will host South Haven for the 2014 Football Homecoming Friday night in Kiowa, Kan. Homecoming had to be moved from its original date due to injuries of the opposing team, which had to forfeit. South Barber's football team also has numerous injuries this season on their squad, which plays eight-man.

Friday homecoming festivities begin with a parade downtown at 2:30 p.m., followed by a pep rally in the Kiowa Auto Parts parking lot. The parade marshall is Harold Cantrell, a longtime Chieftain fan.

Three young women from the senior class were nominated by their peers to vie for homecoming queen. The queen coronation is prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, so get to the football field by 6:30 p.m. so you don't miss it.

The queen candidates are Riley Denton, Paige Koblitz and Taylor McCullough. Senior escorts are Bryce Roberts, Dylan Allison, Peyton Yandel and Hugo Cardenas. One will escort last year's football homecoming queen, Lauren Hitchcock.

Class attendants and their escorts are juniors Caitlin Jacobs and Kolton Pavlu, sophomores Emily Rugg and Gavin Doherty, and freshmen Kacee Hostetler and Joseph Bowden.

Queen CandidatesRiley Denton was nominated by

the student council (StuCo). Her grandparents are Bob and Ginny Stark of Kiowa.

Athletics are an important part of Denton's high school career. A member of the Lady Chieftains basketball team, she's been named All-League and All-State. She

qualified for State Tennis two years. She's also a longtime member of CH Dance Productions competitive dance team.

At SBHS, Denton is senior class treasurer and StuCo secretary, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She's earned her gold, silver and bronze honor pins.

Upon graduation, Denton plans to attend the University of Oklahoma.

Paige Koblitz was nominated by the football team. She is the daughter of Justin and Shelly Koblitz and a member of Kiowa's United Methodist Church youth group.

commissioners conducted their regular meeting on Monday morning.

Alfalfa County commissioners meetingBefore approval of the minutes, the

commissioners reviewed the specs on the request to go out on bids for a new tanker truck for the Nescatunga respond-ers. They decided that the tanker should have 400 horsepower or more, then ap-proved the county clerk to go out on bids.

The commissioners then approved the county clerk to go out on bids to add on to the county building for Helena Rescue.

The commissioners then reviewed the minutes from last week’s meeting before approving them. They also ap-proved the payroll warrant for payment, M & O warrants for payment, road cross-ing permits and monthly officer reports. There were no blanket purchase orders.

Other items on the agenda that were approved by the commissioners:

• Henson Constructions payment on EMS building for the amount of $205,519.00,

• Guernsey Engineers payment for heat/air and generator in the amount of $23,668.66,

• Request from District No. 1 to re-move David Phipps as requisitioning of-fers and add John Cutright,

• Option period dates to begin on Oct. 23 and meet between each individ-ual districts and LegalShield.

The commissioners then adjourned the meeting.

ObituaryJANE STEWART

Jane Stewart, 87, was born in Utica, N.Y., and passed away on Sept. 25, 2014, in Chino Valley, Ariz. Jane was married to Danny Ray Stewart who passed away on Nov. 24, 1999. A private service will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014. Wharton Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Venosdel Sr. will be Thursday, Oct. 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Chuck Lightfoot officiating. Burial will follow in Alva Municipal Cemetery. Wharton Funeral Chapel is in charge of

Harry Lee, son of Alice Irene (Anderson) and Issac Edward Venosdel, was born on June 30, 1932, at the old Alva Hospital. He passed away at the Enid St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center on the 28th of September at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 28 days.

He attended Liberty Bell Rural Grade School and graduated from Alva High School with the class of 1950. On April 21, 1953, he joined the U.S. Army at Oklahoma City and was discharged on April 20, 1955, at the Presidio of Monterey, Calif.

While in the service in California Harry met Maurice Winifred Ready. They were married Jan. 9, 1955, in Vallejo Calif. To their marriage a son, Michael Lee, was born. She died in an auto accident near the family farm on May 8, 1956.

On June 1, 1957, he married Glenda Ann Parker in Alva. To this union five children were born, Harry Lee Jr.; Julia Ann, born on June 14, 1960, and died on June 18, 1960; Brian Kent; Angela

Kay; and Glen Edward, born and died June 2, 1969.

Harry farmed and ranched and was a custom harvester and carpenter, raising cattle, wheat, chickens and gardening. He enjoyed bowling and was an active member of the Moose Lodge.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Beulah Paris, Wilma Venosdel, Virginia Venosdel and Betty Lou Kitchen; and two brothers, Dan and Edward.

Harry is survived by a special friend, Loretta Bails; three sons, Michael Lee and his wife LeaAnn, Harry Lee Jr, Brian Kent and his wife Janet; daughter Angela Kay and husband Timothy Nelson; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Helen Venosdel; a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives; and friends.

Contributions in his name may be made to Alva Moose Lodge #2100 Endowment Fund.

Arrowhead West, Inc. (AWI) is inviting everyone to join the fun at the third annual Monster Dash, 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run being held on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Medicine Lodge. The event will benefit the AWI Client Assistance Fund.

Registration opens at 1 p.m. on the day of the event. The 1 mile fun walk will begin at 3:30 p.m. followed by the 5K run (walkers welcome) at 4 p.m.. An awards ceremony will be

held immediately following the race at approximately 5 p.m. Medals will be given to the winners in each age category and overall winners.

Participants may preregister at the Medicine Lodge AWI office at the junction of 281 and 160 or in Pratt at 10315 Bluestem Blvd. To have a registration form emailed to you please call 620-886-3711.

zombie costume and most creative team will be awarded. We will also have a zombie creation station if anyone needs help getting zombified.

All proceeds from the Monster Dash 2014 benefit the AWI Client Assistance Fund. This fund provides financial assistance to AWI clients who need equipment, treatment or supplies that they cannot afford. Some examples include sensory items, dental examinations, clothing, food, Life Line service and basic home repairs.

AWI serves children and adults with developmental disabilities and has touched the lives of 1,143 clients in the past year. The mission of AWI is to empower people to live meaningful and productive lives.

silver and bronze honor pins. She is a member of the National Honor Society, co-president of the Kansas Association for Youth (KAYS), and is senior class secretary.

Koblitz earned her way to State Track two years and also State Tennis two years. She's played on the Lady Chieftains basketball team, was injured last season, had surgery and physical therapy. She's been accepted to Kansas State University and plans to major in pre-physical therapy with a secondary in athletic training.

Taylor McCullough was nominated by the senior class. Her parents are Michael and Alisha Schmidt.

McCullough was crowned Miss South Barber late last spring and will represent her school in the Miss Cinderella Talent Show and Pageant during Northwestern Oklahoma State University's homecoming Oct. 16-18. A three-year member of forensics, McCullough will present a humorous monologue for her talent.

At SBHS, McCullough has lettered in volleyball three years. She is a StuCo representative and member of FFA. She plans to attend college and major in physical education.

RANDY NICKEL – DISTRICT #3 ALFALFA COUNTY COMMISSIONER

As a life long resident of Alfalfa County, I am excited to bring my fellow neighbors, friends and

associates an unending work ethic. I am Randy Nickel, father to two wonderful sons - the late Jacob Ray, (dec.

2012) and Jared Jesse. I am an active member of the Helena United Methodist Church where I play the bass guitar

with the praise and worship band and I have enjoyed volunteering to coach the summer baseball program for 10

years. I have resided 1 ½ miles South of McWillie for almost 45 of the 50 years I have lived. My parents, Eldon and

Carol Nickel along with 4 of my 5 sibblings all own farms within District #3. I am and will be dedicated to District

#3 of Alfalfa County with my knowledge, perseverance, and patience.

During my childhood I attended Helena-Goltry Schools. I was salutatorian of my class, a Boys State delegate, selected a

member of “Who's Who In American Athletes”, and also a Alternate All State Pitcher. I was a member of the 1982 Enid

American Legion State Champion baseball team. . Keeping true to my ability I attended N.W.O.S.U. and graduated with a B.S.

Degree majoring in Industrial Education, and a double minor Industrial Education and Psychology. I also played baseball for

N.W.O.S.U.

After graduating college I was employed by a bridge construction crew as a welder, and also helped with

the dirt work, steel work, and pouring and nishing concrete. I than went to work for Mabar in Fairview, Oklahoma, where I

was able to learn and become diversied in and out of the ofce. My work entailed being a fabricator, extended the truck

frames to proper length for dump body mounting, welded the hinges, hydraulic hoists, and mounted the dump bodies to the

chassis. The company at that time was expanding and needed help in Engineering. I was fortunate to be asked to join the

internal workplace and become their cad designer. Total Truck and Trailer and FlowBoy out of Norman, Oklahoma were

sister companies at that time. The main engineering was done at Mabar, some of the product line consisted of eight axle

trailers with live bellies used for asphalt spreading. I was promoted to Head Engineer and worked another 5 years. I was

than offered a opportunity as Project Manager working to develop a Skip Loader Tractor starting with a proven drive train

from the Caterpillar 416B backhoe. This was a collaborative effort between Caterpillar and local manufacturing companies.

By having the support of caterpillar engineering at my disposal and the manufacturing of Mertz out of Ponca City,

Oklahoma this product line was developed and sold exclusively to Caterpillar. I was than offered the Chief Engineer position

at Pendpac in Fairview, Oklahoma.

After 3 years at this position I decided to take my part time computer business and become self employed.

Being blessed with small town and county afliates I have been enriched with a thriving business. I was also subcontracted

by AKSLC to do all eld installs and service calls for their wireless internet service. Going on my eighth year, AKSLC, which

was owned by AEC, KanOkla, and SCTelcom, was bought out by KanOkla..Whether it be major law rms, surrounding coops,

churches, abstract ofces, CPA's and many individuals; I thank them all from the bottom of my heart and want them to know

that I will always be available to keep them “up to speed” or “in touch” with society.

I have been the bottom man, the top man, and the only man in companies. Being blessed by working with

several gifted managers and work associates, it has aided me in many ways, from managing people, to conducting multi-

million dollar meetings with major cities in the United States. I am very familiar with this county, and know and understand

many of the residents, along with their needs, wants and priorities. I will use what qualities I have to enhance this area and

fulll the responsibilities of The District #3 Alfalfa County Commissioner. Please allow me to work for you to achieve this

goal. I sincerely appreciate your time!!!

Oklahoma border communities geared up for centennial celebrations of the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1893, fundraising efforts were a high priority.

Little did a small group of ladies in Kiowa, Kan., know that their garage sale fundraising idea would become Kiowa's General Store that grew into a successful organization that would be going strong over 20 years later.

Selling a shirt, a pair of earrings, a knick-knack, often for a quarter at a time, Kiowa's General Store, run by a group of volunteers, raised enough money that they'd given away over $400,000 by their 20th anniversary. Board treasurer Lyla Cropp said their donations totaled $62,155 in 2013.

The volunteers have a board who affiliated with the Greater Kiowa Community Foundation. This enables the general store exemption from income tax but to charge sales tax and donate to other 501 (3) c organizations.

The General Store supports community and area projects, youth, purchases equipment for the hospital and so many more entities. They've helped people in need, such as those who've had house fires. Their giving is endless.

Alva's Cherokee Strip Museum Adding Convention Center

The General Store's latest endeavor goes back to their roots of supporting the Opening of the Cherokee Strip. They made a $1,500 donation to Alva's Cherokee Strip Museum recently.

Housed in the old Alva hospital built in 1932, the museum boasts one of the best collections of pioneer exhibits and Indian art and artifacts in the state. It features 40 rooms displaying the history of Alva and the Cherokee Strip, such as an old school room, drug store (from

Virgil's of Amorita), kitchen, Indian room, presidential room, Army room and a prisoner of war camp.

Last month, Woods County Court Clerk Della Dunnigan (right) sub-mitted a notice to the Woods County Commissioners that she wished to retire on Jan. 1, 2015. This week, on Monday, Sept. 29, Della had asked to be on the commissioners’ agen-da to make a recommendation for an appointment to fill the unexpired portion of her term. She recom-mended that 20-year office veteran Staci Davey be appointed. Judge Dean Linder, along with most oth-er county officers, was present and he also spoke briefly saying that he believed Staci Davey would be an excellent appointment. By Marione MartinA Cherokee man is facing several

misdemeanor and traffic charges following a wreck in Alfalfa County.

Jeffrey Scott Harmon, 51, of Cherokee has been charged with driving while under the influence, displaying an Oklahoma driver’s license after license revoked, and driving while license is revoked, all misdemeanors. He also received traffic citations for towing a vehicle with improper constructed towing device and towing a trailer with an improper stay chain.

According to court records, on

Thursday, Sept. 18, about 6:45 p.m. Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Darin Lancaster was notified by Troop J Headquarters of an injury accident on State Highway 11. On the way to the location, he made contact with Alfalfa County Sheriff Rick Wallace, who said the EMTs had observed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage about the driver.

Harmon had already been transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid so Lancaster contacted Troop J to have a Garfield County trooper go by the hospital to interview the driver. Trooper Trey Matthews went to the hospital.

Lancaster proceeded to the scene, 3.2 miles east of U.S. Highway 64 on State Highway 11. He saw a trailer house on its wheels in the north ditch facing west and a maroon pickup lying on its passenger side facing south in

the westbound lane. The driver of the 2002 Ford F-150 pickup was identified as Harmon.

Trooper Lancaster walked through the scene and saw that the vehicle had departed the roadway to the right, which started the trailer whipping. The trailer came uncoupled from the pickup prior to the pickup rolling one-quarter time. He observed that the trailer hitch was a 2 and 5/16 inch coupler but the pickup had a 2 inch ball on the receiver. He also saw that the safety chains had not been connected to the pickup.

Lancaster checked with Troop J Headquarters on learned Harmon’s license was under revocation. The driver’s license he was holding was a replacement that Harmon was somehow able to get. Trooper Matthews told Lancaster he believed Harmon to be under the influence and placed him under arrest at 7:57 p.m.

Kiowa District Hospital Board of Directors met for its monthly meeting with all mem-bers present: President Zack Odell, Jim Parker, Chantae Simpson, Lori Schrock and Brenna May (who arrived late due to another commitment), hospital Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steve Da-vis, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Janell Goodno, other hospital personnel and members of the public.

The board started an executive session at 6:30 p.m. and didn't open the regular 7 p.m. meeting until about 7:10 p.m. The board held another executive session at the end of the meeting.

Following that final executive session, the board renewed John Hagood's local pharmacy contract. They also approved the bad debt accounts. During the regular meeting Goodno requested uncollectibles (bad debt) be discussed in executive ses-sion. The board also approved the monthly risk management/quality assurance re-ports.

Regarding the bad debt, the hospital/manor comparative balance sheets for Au-gust showed accounts receivable (AR) at $773,268. Less allowances of $336,001, total net patients accounts receivable were $437,267. Goodno said that is the lowest AR since she became the CFO in October of 2011.

Donate Item for Manor Bake Sale Fri-day

New Manor Administrator Kim Bald-ing said the manor will hold a bake sale this Friday starting at 9 a.m. on the front lawn. She welcomes anyone who wants to contribute goodies or donations to the bake sale. Be sure and stop by and satisfy your sweet tooth.

Proceeds will benefit the Barber Coun-ty Community Childcare located in Ki-owa. Balding said she plans several bake sales at the manor throughout the year to benefit various entities in the community as the need arises.

Hospital Financials and StatisticsBefore Goodno presented the hospital's

August financial and statistical reports she explained reasons for the large contractu-al adjustments fluctuations from month to month.

August was a high volume swing bed skilled day month, she said. While that is positive for cash flow, when Kiowa Dis-trict Hospital (KDH) volume for inpatient and swing bed days are high for the month the contractual allowances have a negative impact on the operating statement. When inpatient and swing bed volume is down for the month, there's a positive impact on the operating statement but a negative im-pact on cash flow.

The hospital's auditing firm BKD sets the Medicare allowance adjustments. Goodno said those were not set high enough for 2014 and were recalculated for August. She said the adjustments were based on 2013 data.

As a result of all of the above, CMS/Medicare changed KDH inpatient acute re-imbursement rates from $2,405 to $1,564 and swing bed rates from $2,170 to $1,531.

Goodno said she sent the financial in-formation to BKD for review. “We want to file our interim cost report to get our (Medicare reimbursement) rates as soon as possible. Our financials will look much better then.” After the KDH interim cost report is filed Medicare will adjust the hos-pital rates again before year end, Goodno explained.

“Contractual adjustments made August look bad,” Goodno said. The hospital oper-ating statement showed contractual adjust-ments totaling a negative $515,681. The bulk of that was Medicare adjustments. The bad debt provision was $72,963.

Due to a busy month, the hospital's Au-gust revenues were increased from 2013 by about $55,000, at $268,922. Despite that increase, the hospital showed a net pa-tient loss of $246,758. That's the impact of the negative $515,681 contractual adjust-ments.

$384,464, the hospital showed a net from operations loss of $631,095. Even with $81,572 tax revenue added, the hospital showed a loss of $549,494 in August.

When reviewing expenses, board members learned that utilities at the new hospital are three times higher that at the old smaller building.

Manor Financials and MoreThe manor showed net patient revenue

of $101,901 for August and an addition-al $1,118 in other revenue. Total operat-ing expenses were $143,625 for a loss of $40,606. An addition of $5,000 tax reve-nue made the manor's overall August loss $35,566.

Balding said the manor had 23 total residents as of last Thursday. She intro-duced the manor's new director of nurses, Donna Renner.

Hospital, Foundation Financial UpdateCEO Davis received direction from the

board to possibly have Sam Spicer put the

old hospital building up for auction after gathering further information.

The search for a new administrator/CEO has not yet been successful, Davis said.

Friends of the Hospital and Man-or Foundation President Judy Schrock thanked everyone for their part in the Jeans and Gems fundraiser that raised nearly $31,000.

Now the foundation needs just over $100,000 for its part to pay for bricks and mortar of the new facility. Goodno said they still owe MW Builders $175,000 for the new hospital. She said MW agreed to a partial payment by the end of Sep-tember and the remainder by the end of 2014.

Schrock said she is pursuing more grant applications and awaiting the re-sults for some grants the foundation ap-plied for earlier.

Most of the opportunities to name a

room in honor or memory of someone at the new hospital are gone. However, Schrock said two patient rooms remain. Cost is $30,000 per room.

Other Hospital BusinessDooli Rugg, head of radiology, ap-

prised the board her department is in need of an expensive piece of equipment: basically her “developer” that changes information from analog to digital imag-es. She said the piece is slow and doesn't work well.

The cost is major at $90,175 to make the department digital. If the equipment should quit working, Rugg said they could be without x-ray for three weeks. The board did not take action, but are having Rugg gather more information.

Davis spoke of the need for updated anti-virus software. The board directed him to get more bids.

The next board meeting is Wednes-day, Oct. 29.

build a convention center that will seat up to 275 people. It will be built to the north of the museum, which is located at 901 14th St.

Smith said this additional space will allow the museum to have traveling exhibits and educational seminars. “We hope to collaborate with the area public schools and NWOSU,” Smith said.

The new facility will be open to the public to use for gatherings, such as receptions. Smith said it will be fully equipped with tables and chairs. The general store's $1,500 donation goes toward the purchase of the new sound system for the facility.

Smith said their goal is to raise $650,000 for the building project. Thanks to the generosity of museum supporters, the Charles Morton Share Trust, and Alva's Tax and Tourism Committee, Smith said they've raised about $500,000 since fundraising began in June. Any donations are appreciated, Smith said. She credits volunteers Rose Blunk and Freddie Brown for their tremendous fundraising efforts.

F.M. Erickson is constructing the building and will begin soon, once the blueprints are approved by the state. Smith said estimated completion of the new center is early next spring.

Smith said excitedly, “We have lots of plans for this next year.” She said children can look forward to a lantern walk (as is

traditional for German children) during the Halloween season. Early November there will be a book signing for local authors. The traditional Festival of Trees highlights the holidays.

Moving the old Cedar Grove Church building to sit near the museum's one-room school house is in the process. Past museum board member and volunteer extraordinaire Rose Blunk said, “It's so important to preserve school and church.” On supervised outings, school children visit the museum and have “school” as their great-great-grandparents did in the early days. They even learn to square dance.

“We are a hands-on museum,” Smith said. Of the rooms full of interesting items with ties to this area, Smith said, “They are all donated by locals. We are proud of the museum and want to make it even better for the community.

Suspect in murder-for-hire plot bound for trial

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma City man charged with try-ing to hire a co-worker to kill his preg-nant girlfriend was ordered to stand trial.

Preston Rhoads on Tuesday waived his preliminary hearing in Oklahoma County District Court on two counts each of solicitation to commit murder and attempting to kill another person. His next court date, a pre-trial confer-ence, was scheduled for Nov. 26.

The 31-year-old Rhoads has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Prosecutors say Rhoads asked a for-mer co-worker to help him poison his girlfriend with ricin to kill both her and her fetus. The former co-worker notified the FBI of the alleged plot.

Rhoads is to remain jailed without bond.

According to a court affidavit filed in the case, Rhoads contacted the for-mer co-worker and later produced a vial filled with ricin, a deadly toxin extracted from the seeds of the castor bean plant.

Rhoads told the man that he wanted him to use the ricin to poison his preg-nant girlfriend in order to kill the fetus, the affidavit states.

“Rhoads stated that if the girlfriend were to die in the process, Rhoads is okay with the result,” according to the affidavit.

The co-worker notified the FBI of the alleged plot, which was never car-ried.

called saying that the tank battery was on fire at site north 1 mile to correction line west 4 miles then south to site, ad-vised Helena Fire Department.

5:21 a.m. Information, respondent stated that the stop sign east of Carmen on highways 11 and 45 down, advised DOT.

4:11 p.m. Trespassing, BNSF ad-vised there is a company boring under the railroad, they do not have a work permit, respondent advised they are tres-passing and wants deputies to come out.

7:50 p.m. Information, Cherokee Po-lice Department advised they received two 911 calls from two little girls, one is screaming and one is crying, Cherokee Police Department gave the location, of-ficer advised call is coming from County Road 600 on Fifth Street on left side of road, deputy advised and en route, dep-uty advised there are no houses on the directions given, negative contact.

a strong gas odor in Burlington School, school has been evacuated, advised they have added odorant to the gas lines and the gas crew is checking on it, there is no leak, made contact with city crew, school is clear, guys ran a meter through the school.

8:40 p.m. Officer assistance, Woods County advised of a husband that kicked his wife out of the car, husband is now trying to run her over with a blue SUV, Woods County says not sure if she is east or west of the four-way on Highway 11, Woods County advised the woman is in Grant County, a man stopped and picked her up, is taking her to the gas station in Medford, Woods County advised the husband's destination is Alva, Woods County advised husband pulled over on the side of the road and she got out, he did not push her while vehicle was roll-ing, he is driving without a license.
