THERE'S an old saying that goes “if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it” and in greyhound racing this also applies. If something works perfectly, why try to

change it.

That's what we have done when designing a mating with Chloe Siyan (Brett Lee-Chloe Jones). She is the unraced sister to such champions as Trewly Special,

Trew Millions, Go Forever, Borat, Fergalicious and another unraced bitch called Lankan Hope.

It was Lankan Hope that prompted us to put Chloe Siyan to Collision. That's because Chloe Siyan's full sister Lankan Hope produced to Collision a dog

called Aliwishus Jones and anyone in greyhound racing knows just how fast he was. In the space of a few weeks, Aliwishus Jones reeled of some

spectacular times around Albion Park.

He smashed the Novice class record running 29.79 and then smashed the fifth grade class record with a 29.72. Along the way he picked up the Easter Trophy.

He was something else.

The mating of Collision and Chloe Jones brings in the strong link between Light Of Fire and the similarly bred Sobbing Sal, and the strong link between Malawi's

Prince and the similarly bred Wee Sal.

It also links Centrefire with her brother Shining Chariot. You can see why we chose Chloe Jones, she just had to be mated to Collision.

TWENTY or more years ago, a very wise man I knew, who had been a greyhound breeding guru, gave me a very good piece of advice.

It was that breeders should only judge a stud dog 12 months after that dog has its first city winner.

By “first city winner” we mean one of the stud dog’s offspring that wins at Al-bion Park, Sandown or Angle Park on a Thursday night, or at Wentworth Park or The Meadows on a Saturday night.

Wait an entire year before making a judgment on the stud dog’s worth, or not.

How many greyhound breeders would listen to such advice?

I’d like a dollar for every time I hear breeders discussing how ordinary the first progeny of some young sire are, and on most occasions the first pups have never even made it to the racetrack.

Breaking-in tracks are often the worst places to get a guide on just how the pups of young, unproven stud dogs are going.

I remember, like it was yesterday, how Queensland breaking-in complexes “bagged” the progeny of New Tears when they first started to be educated.

Entire litters, it was claimed, were useless.

Ruination was on the cards for any fool who used him.

The same was said about Brother Fox, and his son, Worth Doing… how wrong they all were!

Which is why, I for one, was happy to

see Roy Galo run a scorching 30.29 when winning a Maiden Final at Sandown last week.

He is a son of El Galo and Xanadu Dancer, who scored by more than 12 lengths in the Maiden.

Okay, it might have been only a Maiden, but I remember the litter brothers Heston Bale and Bekim Bale being on the receiving end of exaltation when they did the same a year or so ago.

El Galo, his sire, has been copping some criticism for what some are saying is a slow start to his stud career.

I am not prepared to agree at all. Take the dog himself. A son of Where’s Pedro and Roxy

Reason, he raced 71 times for 44 wins and 19 placings.

He was always a promising young dog, bred by Dave and Christine Robart-son, who gave him 19 starts for nine wins in Queensland.

He made the Brisbane Cup and Ips-wich Cup finals in those first 19 starts, but never did anyone believe he could be-come an Australian Greyhound Of The Year.

His first real glimpse of greatness came when he was 28 months-old and was narrowly beaten by Tasman Queen in the Australian Cup, not long after he had been bought for the Jason Thomp-son kennel.

From thereon he went on to great-ness.

It was natural improvement.

I once heard someone say of El Galo “if he didn’t lead, he didn’t win, and that’s why I won’t use him at stud”.

Is that one of the most ridiculous things anyone has ever said!

Jason Thompson gave El Galo 52 race starts and the dog won 35 races.

He won the Adelaide Cup, Brisbane Cup, Warrnambool Cup, Gold Coast Cup, Bendigo Cup and controversially lost the TOPGUN.

In all he won $519,000. How anyone can argue against a

record like that is beyond me. But if a stud dog doesn’t produce a

superstar within the first couple of pups he gets to the racetrack, the critics all get on the bandwagon.

I believe those “critics” don’t take enough notice of what is happening on the racetrack.

More and more El Galo progeny are coming through, just like Roy Galo, and showing they can gallop.

Only a couple of weeks ago Bogie Magic (El Galo - Bogie Gem) won the Mick Byrne Memorial at Albion Park.

El Brooklyn (El Galo - Dark Marne) has already won the Warrnambool Cup, was a finalist in the Sapphire Crown and has run 29.35 at Sandown.

Olive Millie (El Galo - GoGo Sutro) made the National Futurity final.

El Fooling (El Galo - Hearts War) is a very, VERY fast sprinter.

Last weekend, Chasing Glory (El Galo - Tommie’s Placard) made the time

honoured Tweed Galaxy final. A littermate, All Tommie was beaten

a head in another heat. Then Proven Maddy (El Galo -

Proven Lily) chased home the sensa-tional Bye Bye Bucks to make this Satur-day night’s Group 1 Peter Mosman final at Wentworth Park.

City winners keep popping up all the time.

Roy Galo has a very special pedi-gree, and one I have always thought would be the best way to mate El Galo.

Firstly though, his dam was a multi-ple city winner and was placed over 600 metres at The Meadows.

From a mating to Brett Lee (grandsire of El Galo) she produced the very good Timbo and Swanky Lee.

What Xanadu Dancer brought to the mating was very similar ancestors to those found in El Galo’s damline.

Roy Galo is line bred 3x4 to Malawi’s Prince and comes in via a daughter and a son.

Malawi’s Prince, a huge speed influ-ence within pedigrees, is a dominant ancestor within the pedigree of El Galo.

Xanadu Dancer is also a daughter of Spiral Nikita, the Irish star who is found in many pedigrees today.

Spiral Nikita bitches are ideal for El Galo because they bring in a duplication of the litter brothers Curryhill Brute (in El Galo) and Curryhills Fox (damsire of Spiral Nikita).

These are all speed lines.

It’s no wonder Roy Galo can ex-plode.

Sometimes reinforcing such speed lines can work against breeders by over-riding the chances of stamina.

In Roy Galo’s case he gets 515 me-tres stamina from the fact that his dam could stay to 600 metres.

This had to have helped him. Ryan Ayre, who trains Bogie Magic

up in Queensland, has told me that he never believed Bogie Magic would run 520 metres when he first put him into training.

That all changed virtually the day the dog turned two.

Remember, El Galo started to show his very best Group form AFTER he had turned 28 months.

AND WHILST on the subject of the Peter Mosman final at Wentworth Park, the Wheeler bred and raced bitch, Grigo-rieva Bale has an interesting pedigree.

She is a daughter of Turanza Bale and the Kiowa Sweet Trey bitch, King-ston Bale, herself a multiple Meadows, Sandown and Cannington winner.

What interested me most is the fact Turanza Bale’s second dam, Miami Bale is by the Irish dog, Silver Ball (used quite often by Wheeler years ago) out of a daughter of Gwendalyn Bale.
