MEMORABILIA can be a fascinat-ing thing.

Only last week I came into pos-session of a 1980 weekly greyhound publication, and the treasure trove of interesting article was to behold.

But what I found absolutely amazing was the array of stud dogs advertised,, all hoping to make it to the top.

Some had already made it, some super race dogs were starting to get their opportunities, and others had obviously been bypassed.

Holding pride of place amongst the stud dogs advertised was a dog called Temlee (Tivoli Chief - Te-mora Lee).

Tony Marino was advertising him at a service fee of $1,000. The advert said simply: “Greyhound Of The Year 1974. Re-cord holder at Olympic Park. Proven sire.

Pups winning classics and record holders in all states. Progeny include Satan’s Legend, HP and world record in Classic win, and the last two Ade-laide Cups, the Melbourne Cup, Sprint Championships and Distance Championships.”

It was as simple as that. Temlee, known the world over as

a legend, was well on his way to such glory.

Standing alongside him was his own son, Satan’s Legend (Temlee - Cyclone Liz) at a fee of $300.

His first progeny had already start to race and “have already won over 30 races”.

While Satan’s Legend would prove a good sire, he was hardly a great sire. One of Temlee’s sons who would become a fine stud dog was also ad-vertised.

He was Wor ld Accla im (Temlee - Clonmannon Ivy).

Bill Fletcher stood him for just $220 alongside his champion half-brother, Acclaim Star (Arctic Tiger - Clonmannon Ivy) at $350, and his sire, Arctic Tiger (Spotted Light-ning - Dallas Orange) at $220.

World Acclaim’s “wrap” was: “Sensational speedster”, and de-scribed by Les Harper as “the fastest dog he has ever trained”.

“Hampered by foot injury throughout his career, he still won on nine different tracks. including Har-old Park.”

“A proven sire at just three years of age.” ` It was extremely interesting to me that World Acclaim included in

his wins a 42.65 record run at Wen-tworth Park.

So much for stayers not making top class stud dogs!

World Acclaim was almost a year older than Acclaim Star, the champion of his time and winner of the National Sprint, Brisbane Cup and Melbourne Cup.

Time has shown us he was far from a good sire.

His half-brother, World Acclaim (by a champion sire, Temlee) became a fine sire; much better than Acclaim Star.

In fact, World Acclaim is still found in the damline of many good race dogs.

Noel Pickett and Bob Wilson were leading studmasters at the time.

Being amongst the “top” stud-masters doesn’t mean you will al-ways stand top class stud dogs.

Pickett in 1980 stood Kid Spring-dale at a fee of $300, Spot Monaro at $200 and Kelowna Prince at $150.

Kid Springdale sired Taburene, Gold Spring and her litter brother, Wild Port, who in turn sired Acacia Park.

Taburene, to a mating to World Acclaim would sire Bandit’s World, a very high class galloper.

Kanangra Kennels, put together by Bob Wilson, was standing in 1980 the star galloper, Tegimi at a fee of $200.

Alongside him were Fine Arama at $200, Wade Park at $200, First Promise at $120 and Solitary Zoom at $150.

Tegimi is found EVERY-WHERE in pedigrees, mainly via his grand staying daughter, the great brood bitch, Bay Road Queen, and the amazing Travelling Girl, who put Dennis Reid on the world greyhound map for decades.

The fact that Tegimi was out of Viola Lee, a sister to Temlee, should be lost on no one.

Whilst Tegimi “carried” Wil-son’s stud for years Fine Arama, Wade Park, First Promise and Soli-tary Zoom are virtually non-existent amongst today’s greyhound pedigree.

Ron Rudd was another leading studmaster at the time.

Pride of place at Berowra Lodge was the grand Waverly Supreme, who by 1980 was eight years old and standing at a fee of $400.

He would continue to get better and better and better as more and more great progeny came along.

He is so much a part of almost every pedigree in Australia today and

also overseas, where his link with his litter brother, Laurdella Fun is one of the world’s great crosses.

Ron had two other imported stud dogs stand at The Lodge. They were Cindy’s Speck at $200 and the “Irish Blueblood”, Westpark Marco at $300.

Cindy’s Speck would achieve a modicum of success coming through a daughter, Lady Jillaura, who was a handy Gabba performer.

His daughters would produce top class Gabba gallopers Kismet Range and Fawn World.

Try to find him today. He is best remembered today as

the sire of the SIXTH dam of Group 1 National Sprint winner, Metz Magic.

This is the “Berella” female line brought to the top by Laurenne Renner in Queensland.

John Clayton and Jim Coleman were two others with a number of stud dogs.

Clayton’s Menangle Park Stud stood Olympic Eagle at $200, Stir-ling Issue at $120 and Tivoli Fables at $150.

Coleman had champion sprinter, Ungwilla Lad at $400 and Lord But-tons at $220.

Ungwilla Lad of course would sire Black Aztec and General Jeff, but would also be found in the dam-line of Pretty Short. He too is every-where in bloodlines.

Lord Buttons, on the other hand, is almost impossible to find.

Clayton’s star, Olympic Eagle proved himself at stud and his fe-males were outstanding.

This is the same female line as Glider’s Son and Peter Glider, and also a similar line to National Lass.

John’s other two stud dogs hardly rate a mention now, if ever.

Advertised in that 1980 trade paper were such outstanding race dogs, and stud failures, as Sole Force, Smooth Keith, etc. etc.

Which all goes to prove that racetrack performances may not al-ways be the best guide to a dog’s chances at stud. Take World Acclain and his half-brother, Acclaim Star for instance.

There is no doubting Acclaim Star was easily the best race dog, but World Acclaim had the better pedi-gree.

Pedigree won out in the end, but World Acclaim was a record breaker, so he was certainly no slouch on the track. - courtesy
