Calla EditionsA NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

When we launched Calla Editions in 2008, I wrote: “The look and feel of Calla Editions represent the very best of the bookmaker’s craft. These are books made the old-fashioned way . . .” Appreciative

customers agreed that we had offered them elegant books with classic appeal — within the reach of even those with limited resources to own them.

Our new offering extends the range of the initial season to include contemporary subjects worthy of the Calla treatment, as well as timeless classics.

Marilyn: August 1953 unearths a nearly forgotten trove of photos shot for LOOK magazine. John Vachon’s lens captured a rarely seen facet of Marilyn’s sexual cha-risma and her ability to project radiant beauty and deep emotion almost without effort, even while teetering on crutches.

A Kingdom Far and Clear: The Complete Swan Lake Trilogy is a rare collaboration between a bestselling author of fiction and an acclaimed illustrator. This Calla Edition fulfills Mark Helprin’s long-standing wish to see the parts of his epic, multi-generational fable finally united. Evocative illustrations by award-winning Chris Van Allsburg make this book irresistible to fantasy lovers of all ages.

Hamlet: Prince of Denmark is a highly graphic depiction of Shakespeare’s conflicted protagonist by one of the masters of Edwardian period pen-and-ink illustration—combining macabre eroticism with languid decadence.

Three beautifully crafted illustrated classics echo Calla’s first season. Grimm’s Fairy Tales, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, is a perfect example—timeless stories embellished by one of the great illustrators of the Golden Age. The Arabian Nights and The Jungle Book are equally striking—with new, decorative page designs and numerous full-color plates by their original illustrators.

As always, Calla Editions are made using papers from certified sustainable forests and printed under strict environmental controls. Your customers will want these distinguished hardcover books for their own libraries, but also as gifts for discern-ing family members and friends.

Marilyn, August 1953

The Lost LOOK Photos Photographs by John VachonEdited by Brian Wallis

In the summer of 1953, John Vachon, then a photographer for LOOK magazine, drew the assignment to cover three American films being shot on location in the Canadian Rockies. In one of those shoots, Vachon captured a Marilyn Monroe rarely seen in the thousands of carefully styled photographs issued by her studio and handlers. Here is the reigning movie star of the 1950s with her guard down, giving Vachon unusual access and repeated opportunity to capture her sexual charisma as the ultimate “girl next door.” Unexplainably, only two of these magnificent pictures made their way into the magazine. The rest were filed away for nearly sixty years—until now. Facsimiles of Vachon’s handwritten daily letters to his wife and insightful original essays on both Marilyn and the photographer make this book a treasure for Marilyn collectors as well as lovers of fine photography.

• Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) rivals Elvis Presley as the most enduring pop-culture icon of the twentieth century. She is the perennial subject of countless photo books, magazines, and television biopics.

• LOOK magazine (1937-1971) was, along with its rival LIFE, emblematic of a mid-twentieth-century Golden Age in American photo news magazines. After the magazine folded, its founders donated their photo archives to the Library of Congress. Among the thousands of files of negatives stored there is a treasure of Marilyn photos taken by a staff photographer, of which only two had ever seen publication in the magazine.

• Brian Wallis is Chief Curator and Director of Exhibitions at the International Center of Photography in New York.

Photographer Profile

John Vachon (1914-1975) earned his stripes as a documentary photojournalist while a member of the renowned Farm Security Administration (FSA) group that included Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, Arnold Rothstein, and others—all now recognized as titans of twentieth-century photo graphy. After his time at the FSA, Vachon shot more than 450 assignments for LOOK magazine. His pseudo-candid sessions with Marilyn Monroe in 1953 captured a reigning Hollywood star as mere mortal (though a gorgeous one). In his ability to present her humanity without either idealization or guile, he’s given the legions of Marilyn fans worldwide a very rarely seen portrait of their idol.

Shakespeare’s tragedy lavishly

illustrated by a master of the

pen-and-ink medium

Artist Profile

English book illustrator John Austen (1886-1948) began his artistic career in the creative milieu that spawned the Art Nouveau style. His work also embraced Art Deco, and he eventually produced com-mercial advertising and poster illustration in his later career. Austen was a friend of Harry Clarke, the Irish illustrator of Calla Editions’ Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark William Shakespeare

Illustrated by John Austen

John Austen’s hauntingly illustrated edition, published in 1922, remains unparalleled among all other treatments of Hamlet to this day. An adherent of the Aesthetic Movement in England that included Aubrey Beardsley and James A. M. Whistler, Austen shifted to a much more commercial style later in his career, and Hamlet is one of the few artifacts of the early pinnacle of his creativity.

The Jungle Book Rudyard Kipling

Illustrated by Maurice and Edward J. Detmold

An otherwise modest edition of the first volume of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book appeared in 1908, distinguished mainly by the inclusion of 16 breathtaking color plates by the gifted artist twins Maurice and Edward J. Detmold. Calla’s newly designed selection of the most beloved of Kipling’s classic stories contains all of the Detmolds’ original color illustrations. The plates were scanned from a rare set of portfolio prints to ensure the greatest possible fidelity to the brothers’ original conception for the art.

Golden Age artist Kay Nielsen, a master of fantasy, lavished the text with 25 intricately detailed color and numerous black-and-white images that glow with his phantasmagorical style. With 15 stories that include the popular “Billy Goat’s Gruff,” this is one of the most stunning children’s books ever produced.
