Monitoring Is Designed To Protect Against The Threats You Cant See
Without The Proper Support Vital Processes Just Cannot FunctionYour critical systems are the lifeblood of your operations. If something should happen to them, you are simply out of business. You need to monitor and control your entire facility protectioninfrastructure to ensure maximum availability and continuous productivity.
Vital computing, communications and industrial process control facilities all depend on theoperation of power protection and mission-critical air control systems to maintain these operations. If a problem develops in the ability of any one of these support systems the performance of the entire facility is at risk.
These systems may be located close byor on the other side of the country. No matter wherethey are located, problems can and will develop. The difference is whether or not you will beable to react to these problems before they become disasters.
The Reasons For Monitoring Are ManyExpose unknown threats Leaking water, developing equipment problems and other undetected conditions can shut down critical systems without any warning.Enable proactive management A developing problem that goes unreported could signaltrouble ahead for a vital piece of computer support equipment. Knowing the up-to-theminute condition of these systems allows preventive measures to be taken in the most efficient and effective manner.Reduce expenses Electronic monitoring alerts you to problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. It also requires less manpower, reduces downtime and provides detailed information for easier troubleshooting.Keep equipment operating The ability to eliminate previously unseen problems by graphically viewing the operation of support systems in real-time helps prevent downtimeand promotes productivity.Solve the right problem Unrecorded data involving an operational event might cause you to miss the real trouble spot. Having access to the right information provides the abilityto properly diagnose the source of the problem in the first place and helps to prevent repeat occurrences.
-
Undetected. Unnoticed. Unseen. Unrecorded. Unreported.
what is happening inside your critical facilities,
unavailability.
If you dont know
the end result will be
Can You Really Afford Not To Know?
The price you pay for not knowing what is happening within your facilitymay be too large to pay. Loss of productivity due to system downtime andthe associated costs are a direct result of the inability to react to problemswithin your operations.
Because of the major investment youve made in critical facilities and thesystems to support and protect their operation it just doesnt make senseto be in the dark about whether or not your information and communicationsystems are functioning properly.

You Have To Know There Is A Problem Before You Can Correct The Problem
There are any number of points within a critical facility where an unseen small problem can develop
and lead to much larger and costlier disasters. These examples show the types of occurrences that
can develop and what can happen if they are not responded to in a timely manner.
Battery SystemYou have a weak cell in yourbattery string. Too bad youwont find out about it until itfails five minutes into the nextpower outage.
Enclosure SystemsRacks and cabinets are a great way toconsolidate and protect equipment. But by nature of a cabinet, problemsdeveloped inside can be concealed.
UPS SystemsYour UPS has an internalfault and has been onbypass since Sunday. Noone knows about it now but they will if you lose utility power.
Automatic Transfer SwitchesYou have a utility power outage. Your UPS is supplying battery power to your computer equipment and your back-upgenerator just came on-line. Life is good, right? Wrong! If the ATS does not transferthe load to generator power, then your network is still going to go down when you run out of battery power. Too littleknowledge can be a dangerous thing.
Critical Mechanical SystemsThe good news is that you had aredundant pump so that whenyour primary pump failed yourcooling system stayed on-line. The bad news is that you are down to one pump and you never know it.
Liebert MonitoringSolutions Fall Into These Seven Categories:
Third Party Monitoring System Connectivity
The use of open protocols allows you to interface Liebert units and monitoringsystems with other types and brands ofcontrol equipment including BMS, NMS,SCADA and fire alarm systems.

Power Conditioning UnitsA grounding problem in your power conditioningsystem causes small voltage disturbances. Youmay not even realize there is corrupt data or damage to other systems until bigger problemsoccur months later.
Water LeaksYour data cabling is lying in a growingpuddle of water under the raised floorbecause of a plumbing leak. It is just amatter of time before that affects youroperation. Who knows how long it will take to track down the cause of the problem.
Breaker and Power DistributionSeveral circuits are on the verge ofoverload. If one of these breakerstrips, servers will crash. Too bad youare not aware of the situation.
DC Power SystemsAn overvoltage condition in anessential DC power systemcauses an alarm to sound.Problem is, no one is there to hear it.
Liebert providesthe right people.the right information to
UPS SystemsYesterday the UPS failed its automatic batteryself test. Today the UPS failed to carry the loadduring a momentary power interruption, halt-ing a critical process. The problem isnt the UPSor the weak battery. The real problem is thatyou didnt know that the UPS failed a self-diagnostic test.
Static Transfer SwitchesA transfer switch fails totransfer when your primarypower feed goes down inthe middle of the night. You wont know about it,though, until tomorrowmorning when there are no sales reports, no e-mailsand certainly no one conducting normal business.
Environmental HVAC SystemsHigh head pressure, compressorshort cycling, dirty filters, pump or fan failure these are just a fewof the problems that can cause mission-critical air conditioningsystems and other HVAC equipmentto go down and temperatures togo up. One more problem? Notknowing that these troubles aredeveloping in the first place.
Generator OperationThe good news is your emergency generator cameon-line during a power failurelast night and kept thingsrunning for several hours. The bad news is that the fuel tank is now almostempty - and no one realizesit, leaving you unprotectedfor the next outage.
Intrusion AlarmThe entrance of unauthorizedpersonnel into a remote shelteris a big problem. The real problem is that the person whoneeds to know this is happeningis unaware and possibly isnt inthe same building or even thesame state.
Surge ProtectionThank goodness you installed that surge protector. It has protected your sitethrough many thunderstorms. Too badit self-destructed protecting you fromthat last surge and you dont know thatit needs to be replaced.

IT ManagerThe person responsible for the operation of the computer system must also be very aware of the threats to its operation. This makes getting key operating information to this individual a critical objective of any monitoring plan.
Who Needs To Know?We understand that in any critical application, there will be different usersrequiring different types of important information that can be critical to the operation of your facility. But if the right piece of information doesntget to the right people in a timely fashion it may end up being worthless.Problems can be solved in many ways, but the best solutions usually startwith good information delivered quickly.
What Type Of User Are You?
Different people in your organization
need to know different things about
the operation of your critical facilities
based on their levels of responsibility:
Network Because a network can be contained in just one facility or spread across numerous locationscoast-to-coast, managers must be able to monitor the performance and operating status ofkey support equipment no matter where it is located. These systems should also be able tointerface with an existing network management system for expanded monitoring capability.
Data CenterThose responsible for the operation of large data or telecommunications centers must beaware of all protective infrastructure within these facilities. They need up-to-the minuteinformation that will allow them to keep systems operating no matter what the situation.
FacilityThese people are interested in the performance of critical operations in the context ofan entire facility. Events in one area of a facility can directly affect operation of critical systems in another and vice versa.
EnterpriseMultiple sites mean multiple responsibilities for those in charge of an enterprise-widenetwork and communications system. They need to know the status of many remote locations in order to keep the entire organization working smoothly.

How Deep Does Your Monitoring Need To Be?
Important facility operational and status information needs to be communicated by different means with
varying levels of importance. This is why Liebert gives you so many ways to supervise your enterprise.
Critical Information Takes Many FormsMonitoring can range from a simple remote panel that provides basic operating informationfrom an air conditioning unit all the way to full-scale monitoring and control of a critical facility including trending and data analysis.
Your requirements will vary according to the specificity of the information you need. You mayrequire no more than a local readout of a units operating status. Or you may need the abilityto control its operation and receive alarms.
These information requirements may also go beyond basic monitoring and control. You mayneed the ability to analyze performance data in order to pinpoint trouble spots so that thesame problems dont happen again and again.
It may also be necessary to share information with an existing building management system(BMS) or other supervisory controls.
What Exactly Do You Need To Know? You need enough information to guard against anything that can keep your critical supportsystems from being able to protect the operation of your computing and communications systems. Knowing where and what the problem is thats the first step to keeping it frombecoming a disaster. No matter what you need to know about the operation of your facility and the essential systems inside, Liebert has a product that will enable you to do it.

Liebert Battery Monitoring
Full-Scale UPS Battery Testing And Diagnostics
Liebert offers the latest in UPS battery monitoring technology with products by Albr a leader in the field
since 1972. Albr technologies by Liebert are designed to prevent battery failure, optimize useful battery life,
reduce maintenance cost and increase safety.
A Variety Of Solutions For Testing Flexibility Liebert offers a variety of battery monitoring system sizes and capabilities to meet a wide range of applications. These include monitoring and diagnostic units for UPS battery cabinets and largemulti-cell configurations, as well as telecom and stationary battery systems. Handheld testingdevices combine maximum portability with full-featured battery data measurement and storage.
Early Warning For Battery Problems Like an ultrasound for a battery, this technology lets you "look inside" and assess its true state of health. Liebert battery monitors use a patented Internal DC resistance test method that bypasses the limitations of outdated AC based impedance testing. By tracking internal resistance, the system can predict and report failing conditions prior to complete failure. A time-to-go estimate algorithm, which uses discharge parameters and internal resistance readings, assists in predicting remaining battery life. It is essential to detect deterioration at an early stage to prevent catastrophic failures.
Other battery monitors internal ohmic readings become inconsistent as the UPS load variesbecause of variations in AC ripple on the battery. The Liebert DC resistance test method is not influenced by ripple and thus provides data that is repeatable and reflects the true condition of the battery.
Optimizing Useful Battery Life Sealed batteries are sensitive to temperature and float voltage settings, which means battery life can be extended by optimizing these conditions. A battery monitor provides the user withinformation such as temperature and cell voltages, allowing for cost savings by optimizing usefulbattery life. Instead of waiting for an inevitable failure or replacing batteries prematurely to prevent problems, you can continue to utilize your batteries longer and with confidence by knowing the true internal condition.

The Liebert Monitoring Group can provide multiple paths for
integrating Liebert equipment into your existing Building or
Network Management system. Through strict conformance to
Open Protocols like Modbus, BACnet, SNMP, Liebert can provide
robust and effective integrated solutions.
Building Management System InterfacesBuilding Management Systems maintain a vital role on overall operations or facilities and buildings. Simply stated, Building Management Systems (BMS) create andmaintain controlled, energy-efficient environments for all types of premises. This includes the management andmonitoring of core aspects of each facility, from powersupply, temperature, and humidity, to fire, access and security.
Generally speaking, most BMS systems contain the ability to communicate to Modbus and or BACnet devices. These languages or protocols are considered "Open" fromthe standpoint that they do not require special tools inorder to integrate these devices into a BMS system.
The Liebert Monitoring Group supports Modicon's Modbus and ASHRAE's BACnet definitions.
Network Management System InterfacesOne of the main purposes of deploying a NetworkManagement System (NMS) is to maintain data availability. This includes access to data and applicationsvital to business critical operation. One of the key elements of an NMS operation is that devices or unitsreside on a network infrastructure. All of the devices thatreside on the network require space and manageability inorder for professionals to successfully manage the entirenetwork. This implies that network performance is critical.
The Liebert Monitoring Group supports SNMP v1, v2cand MIB II structures.
Third Party Interfaces
SiteLink modules integrate 4 or 12 Liebertunits into a single device. The SiteLink has the ability to stand alone and act as aModbus or BACnet slave through either aEIA-232 or EIA-485 (2-wire or 4-wire) configurable port. BACnet over IP can beaccomplished by adding a SiteGate. See the Advanced Monitoring Solution sectionfor more details.
Output to Building Management Systemsusing Modbus and BACnet MSTP.
The Site TPI-E product can be used to intelligently communicate to non-Liebertunits within your infrastructure. This allows you to effectively monitor critical equipment with SiteScan Web. See theAdvanced Monitoring Solutions section for more details.
Input from non-Liebert units that use Modbus, BACnet and other non-standard protocols.
The Liebert IntelliSlot 485 Card w/Adapterprovides SiteScan Web or BuildingManagement Systems monitoring and control of your UPS. The card deliversModbus or Liebert's Proprietary protocol via the EIA-485 port.
The Liebert IntelliSlot Web/485 Card withAdapter bridges the gap between Networkand Building Management systems with its ability to communicate to BMS systems with Modbus, as well as communicating to NMS systems through SNMP and Web. All interfaces can operate concurrently.
Output to Building Management Systemsusing Modbus over EIA-485.Output to Network Management Systemsusing SNMP and Web.
The Liebert IntelliSlot Web Card communi-cates to network Management SystemsSNMP. As the name infers, the card also produces a Web page which allows users toget real-time data through their Internetbrowser.
