What is NFC?

NFC is an acronym for Near Field Communication, a emerging technology

It is a wireless communication technology like Bluetooth, Infra Red on your mobile phones

It can be used to transfer data between 2 NFC enabled devices

NFC can be enabled on multiple daily use objects – Key Chain, Mobile Phone, Smart Card for use by consumers

NFC is commonly used in the Retail, Transit and Financial Services industries

How does NFC work ?

NFC can be enabled on multiple devices for users: E.g., Card, Key-chain etc

The service provider (E.g., a MRTS transit company, a retailer, a bank etc) installs NFC readers at the location where the service is being provided (E.g., train station, retail outlet etc)

The user carries the NFC user device with him and ‘taps’ it against the NFC reader

Since NFC is a short-range, wireless communication technology, the ‘tap’ ensures a transfer of data from the NFC user device to the NFC reader

This data (ticket information, credit card information etc) is then transmitted by the reader to the back-end processing system for further processing

Using this technology, customers can benefit in multiple ways:

a) Load ticket information onto an NFC card and then tap the card at an NFC-enabled turnstile in the MRTS station to pay for train rides. Upon ‘tapping’ at the entry turnstile and the exit turnstile, the system will automatically deduct the value of the train ride from the pre-paid currency amount on the NFC card

b) Load credit card information onto an NFC phone and then tap the card at an NFC reader at a retail outlet to pay for a purchase. The purchase amount will get automatically charged to the credit card

NFC Card – How will I apply for it?

STEP 1: Citibank will send you a direct mailer to your mailing address explaining the service and asking for your consent for the service

STEP 2: If you are interested, you will need to fill up the attached application form, sign in the consent column and return the form to Citibank

STEP 3: Citibank will process your application form, open a virtual NFC credit card in your name and send you a letter with your credit card details, an explanation of the card download process and the address of the nearest Nokia Priority outlet where you can pick up your NFC phone

STEP 4: You should then take the letter you have received along with your ID proof and visit the Nokia Priority outlet where the customer service representative will verify your identity and hand over your new NFC Nokia 6212 phone (exchange your old phone for new, buy a second phone at a discounted price through an EMI scheme)

STEP 5: You can then download your NFC credit card onto your new Nokia 6212 phone by a standard download process (explained in the next section)

STEP 6: Once your credit card has been downloaded to your phone, you are free to go ahead and use the NFC credit card to make purchases at all participating merchant outlets

STEP 7: You can pay for these credit card purchases through the normal route (online banking, by physical cheque etc)

NFC Card – How will I download my NFC credit card?

STEP 1: You will have to carry the physical letter of confirmation received from Citi to the designated Nokia Priority center and collect your Nokia 6212 NFC phone

STEP 2: The Nokia 6212 phone will have a pre-installed NFC wallet on the phone (wallet application). Upon opening the wallet for the first time, you will have to choose a 4-digit PIN which will be used to open the wallet every time henceforth

STEP 3: The wallet will prompt you to enter your credit card number over a GPRS Internet connection. After the credit card number entry, to verify the customer identity, 3 security questions will have to be answered by keying in the answers into the wallet (Date of Birth, Mailing address ZIP code and a secret 6-digit numeric code). To get the 6-digit numeric code, you have to send an SMS ‘NFC’ followed by the last 4 digits of your card number to 52484. You will immediately get a return SMS with the secret 6-digit code.

STEP 4: Once the information you have entered is verified, the virtual credit card information is sent Over The Air (OTA) on the existing GPRS Internet connection and written into the wallet. You can now open the wallet, choose the downloaded credit card and begin transacting

NFC – What are the other services being offered?

Customers will be offered a chance to download special NFC discount coupons for select merchants

These coupons will allow customers to avail of special merchant discounts of 10% off for every NFC transaction

Coupons can be used for every NFC transaction at participating merchant outlets (where coupon discounts are being offered)

Customers can re-download coupons for re-use

These special coupon discounts will be available only on NFC transactions and not on normal credit card transactions

NFC phones can hence detect these RFID tags when the phone is tapped on the poster

These RFID tags can have special content on latest offers, discounts, product descriptions etc embedded on them

An NFC customer can tap his phone on these posters and ‘discover content’
