November Meeting

Our November Meeting will be a discussion about winter preparation and preparing trees for dormancy. Our trees are slowing down and the focus this month is to learn what that means so your trees remain healthy during our two months of “winter” weather. All trees have different needs and it is important to understand the differences between species so you continue to be successful along your bonsai journey.

As always, bring any tree you have questions about or would like to discuss to the meeting.

We will also begin collection dues for 2021 at the November meeting. Please consider joining or renewing early to make the BSF registration process easier.

October Events Recap A lot of trees found great homes this October we owe another big THANK YOU to Cathy Carter and Elaine Mancusi!!!!

All of Cathy’s trees from the October meeting found great homes and I have seen many pictures of trees with fresh new growth from the love and attention they have received since the meeting. I will be excited to see these trees next spring/summer when they are ready for some major work. Let’s make Cathy proud by bringing out the full potential in all this great material.

The boxwood collecting event was another fantastic opportunity to get some urban yamadori. Thank you Elaine for thinking of the club and allowing us to come get some great material. These were large OLD boxwoods that will make excellent bonsai specimins.

All active members should have received their copy of the Florida Bonsai Magazine from BSF on October 14th. For those that haven’t seen it (or had it sent to their SPAM folder) I have provided a link.

Soil Mixing Event The club is currently out of bonsai soil. We will be scheduling a day to mix additional buckets. In the meantime please bring back your empty buckets and lids to the upcoming meetings. The more buckets we have the more soil we can make at one time.

Seasonal Advice November care follows our theme of fall/winter preparation. With cooler weather water needs will diminish and trees should be watched to prevent the roots from staying too wet.

Pruning this time of year should be minimal. Trees shouldn’t be putting on much growth due to a combination of shorter daylight hours and cooler temperature.

The temperature should still be mild enough that plants will not have to be protected in November but, you want to get prepared. Place all of your tropical plants in one area so you will not forget any if temperatures drop dramatically. Once we start seeing nighttime temperatures of 45 or below we have to start protecting for our most sensitive species (i.e., buttonwood, black olive, etc.) other tropical trees will start needing protection once the temperatures reach the low 40’s to upper 30’s. When in doubt it doesn’t hurt to be conservative.

Brevard County Multi-Club Picnic and Auction This is a great event and great opportunity to meet members of other clubs. There are lots of bonsai related items at very reasonable prices. As with any auction, you never know what you will find.

The event is held under a huge pavilion with a lot of picnic tables. Bathrooms are readily accessible and there is easy access to parking right by the pavilion. As of now masks are required.
