RachelCainehascreatedanurbansciencefiction story following the life (or rather,afterlife)ofBrynDavis,anex-armyfuneraldirector.Thestorystartsoffratherbenignly,but the action arrives swiftly as the maincharacter finds herself embroiled in thegreedy schemes of her boss, and is killedbeforetheendofthesecondchapter.Don’tworry, that’s not a spoiler! Bryn is revivedby a top secret new drug called Returne,the same drug her boss has been sellingillegally.The company who make Returnethink that Bryn can find the leak in theircompanyanddiscoverwho is responsibleforsellingitontheblackmarket.

Nowthisiswherethingsgetalittlemorbid,fortheeffectsofReturnearenotpermanent.Itneedstobetakeneverysingledayorthebodybeginstodecay.Brynisgivenadeadlineoftwoweekstofindtheleak,orthecompanywillstopgivingherthedrugandshe’llbegintofalltopieces…literally!

ThisnovelisdefinitelyNOTsomethingtoreadwhileeatingassomeofthescenesarejustplaindisgusting-adescriptionofmaggotsandfliesfeedingoffaliquefyingcorpsewasthemostrevolting,althoughsomehowstillveryreadable.FromtheperspectiveofBryn,thehorrorissomehowdimmedandyoudon’tgettrappedinthegorinessofthescenario,sothatwasactuallyoneofmyfavouritescenesinthestory,eventhoughIusuallycan’tstandhorrificscenesinbooks.

ThereisalsoabitofaJamesBondfeelingtothisstory.Thetwomenassigned by the company to assist Bryn are typical spy characters:charismatic, good looking and deadly. As a character, Bryn wasn’tinstantly as likable as some of the protagonists who Rachel Cainehasusedinherotherseries.Bryninitiallycomesacrossasahelplessvictim,aftergettingkilledandthenpanickingaboutbeingdead.Butshe comes into her own pretty quickly, accepting her new afterlifeand the few benefits it provides. Bryn possesses a good balance ofgentlenessandpracticality;thechoiceofherasacharacterseemedtoworkperfectlyforthenovel,whereasamorebrashnaturewouldhaveclashedtoomuchwiththestrongmaleleads.

An excellent start to a new series and I can’t wait to see what willhappeninthesecondinstalment!Chrissi(Pb$19.95)

omittedfromthepreviousandoriginalversion,withFeiststating“itisessentiallythebookIwouldhavewrittenhadItheskillsIpossesstoday.”

It is clear to any reader why this book is counted among the mostclassic of modern fantasy. The magic of this novel centres on therift between the worlds of Midkemia, a European-like place, andKelewan,seeminglyinspiredbyancientJapan.Feist’sworld-buildingis unparalleled. The cultures, beliefs - even so far as the resourcesavailable - are incredibly detailed, even in this first novel of the RiftWar. He does not get swayed to info-dump, but almost every wordandparagraphinextricablylendsitselftothestory.

Thecharactersinthistalearenotbiggerthanlife,butarehumanswithfaults,capableofmakingmistakesthatcanstartorendawar-affectingentireworldsbydoingoneortheother.Therearecrossroadsforeverycharacter;thedecisionsaredifficultandnotalwayspredictable.

Feistisavisionaryofmodernfantasy,breakingawayfromtheconstantstreamofnear-reproductionsbyotherauthorsofTolkien’sepicseries,particularly in the era in which Magician was written. There aresomecommonsignsoffantasy,withelves,dwarvesandaEuropean-inspiredmedievalworld,buttheworldsandplotsarestrongerthanthetypicalclichés.

For me, Feist remains one of the best fantasy writers of all time.Nyssa(Pb$21.99)
