Nexus 9

11/02/2015 – Martyn

1 Installation

1.1 Preparation The Nexus 9 runs Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and requires a Google account which in turn requires an email

address. Create an Outlook email address (http://login.live.com) such as [email protected] and then

use this when you create a Google account (https://accounts.google.com) with a personal name such as the

dummy one ‘TabOne TechFord’. Notice that you cannot use numbers in the name, only alphabetic letters.

1.2 Turn on the Nexus 9 for the first time The battery may not be fully charged at first. It’s a good idea to fully charge the battery as soon as you get a

chance. To charge and turn on your device, follow these steps:

Connect the small end of the micro USB cable to the micro USB port on the bottom of the tablet, when viewed

from the front. Then connect the other end to the charging unit and the charging unit to a power outlet. To

turn the tablet on, press the power button on the right side for a few seconds.

You see the welcome screen, so scroll down one to select ‘English (United Kingdom)’, press the yellow button

and you will see the list of WiFi signals. Touch the one you want and it will ask for the WiFi password.

The keyboard will

appear when you

touch the

password field so

you can type the

password. It may

take a short while

to connect to the

internet.

Once connected, it

detects it needs to

update it’s

software. Touch

the ‘Next’ button

and it downloads

the software for

some minutes and

then reboots itself.

Once rebooted it

asks you to sign

into your Google

account, so we can

use the one we set

up beforehand in

preparation. Sign

in by entering the

email address that

we set up

beforehand and

then used to create

our Google

account. The on-

screen keyboard

appears to let us

do this and then

allows us to type in

the Google account

password.

It asks if we want to

add a credit card,

but we select

‘Remind me later’

and touch the ‘Next’

button.

It then asks about

Google services, so

we just leave the

defaults and touch

‘Next’. When it asks

about ‘Google Now’

we touch ‘No

thanks’ and then the

‘Next’ button.

At last, we have the

welcome banner on

the ‘desktop’, but

there is a system

alert at the top,

saying there is

another update to

install. Touch the

‘INSTALL’ button

and it gives details

on the update so

simply touch

‘Restart & install’.

Finally, after

rebooting, everything

is finished and we see

the login screen.

Note the round,

turquoise ‘User’ icon

top right which allows

different users to log

in. Currently we only

have the one, default

Google account user

‘TabOne’. Log in by

simply swiping in the

middle of the screen

and it shows the

‘Home’ screen which

is the equivalent of the Windows desktop.

Every Home screen shows the Favourites tray – it's a quick way to get to your apps.

At the bottom of every screen, no matter what you're doing, you'll always find three

navigation buttons. If you don't use these buttons often, they may shrink to dots or

fade away, depending on the current app. To bring them back, touch their location

on your device.

On the All Apps screen available from the Favourites tray, notice the Settings icon . This brings you to

the Settings screens for your device, where you can adjust things like network, sound and account settings,

among many others. You can search the Settings app to find what you need quickly. Simply touch the search

icon at the top of the screen and type in your search term.

You can use Quick Settings to easily access Wi-Fi settings, change display brightness, and more. To open Quick

Settings, swipe down from the top or top-right corner of any screen.

At the top of the screen you'll find Google Search, which lets you search your phone or the Internet. Touch

Google to type your search terms, or the Microphone icon to speak them. You can also say "OK Google" and your query on any Home screen to activate a voice search or perform an action.

Many screens in apps and settings include a Menu icon . Touch it to explore additional options, often

including a Help item that provides more information about that screen.

1.3 Email app first time

Back: Opens the previous screen that you were working in, even if it was in a different app. Once you go

back up to the Home screen, you can't go back any further in your history.

Home: Opens Home. If you’re viewing a left-hand or right-hand Home screen, opens the central Home

screen. To open Google Now, swipe up.

Overview: Opens a list of thumbnail images of apps and Chrome tabs that you’ve worked with recently.

To open an app, touch it. To remove a thumbnail from the list, swipe it left or right.

Press the All Apps

button to view all

the apps. Notice that

there are two small,

white dots at the

bottom which

indicate that the list

of apps covers two

screens. Swipe the

screen to the left to

see the second

screen. Swipe to the

right to get the first

screen back. Touch

the Back or Home

buttons to go back to

the desktop.

Touch the red ‘M’

icon in the favourites

tray to run the Gmail

app. It asks you to

add an account, so we

touch the ‘Personal

(IMAP/POP)’ and ‘OK’.

You then enter your

email address on the

next screen and touch

‘Next’, followed by

your email password.

There follows some

options which we can

leave at the default

values and after

touching ‘Next’ a

couple of times,

everything is done.

Touch ‘Take me to

Gmail’ and it shows the

email Inbox containing

three emails.

Touch the YouTube

email and it opens.

Notice that there is a

‘button’ with grey

writing ‘Show

pictures’. This is a

security feature, so if

you are happy that the

email is from a

legitimate source,

touch the button and

all the pictures will

appear.

To go back to the

Inbox, touch either the

Back button or the

white left arrow on the

left of the heading bar.

Notice that the

YouTube email is no

longer shown in bold

letters, signifying that

you have opened and

read the email.

To compose a new

email, touch the white

‘pencil’ on the red

circle, bottom right.

This allows you to type

an email address to

send the email to, a

subject line and the

body of the email.

Touch the send icon

top right to send

the email and once sent

it returns you to the

Inbox screen. Some

new emails may have

appeared meanwhile.

From the Inbox, touch

the menu icon top

right to list all the email

folders. Touch the Sent

icon and is shows our

email hasn’t been sent

yet, so press the Back

icon and then the

Outbox icon.

Hey, there is nothing

there, the email has

been sent. Touch the

Sent icon and it shows

our recently composed

new email has been

sent and is listed in the

Sent folder.

second screen, then

again for the third, and

so on. Notice that there

are six small circles

towards the bottom,

representing the six

you swipe left or right.

tablet and is the main user

with their own Google

previously set up an email

set up, we receive and

email from Outlook, with a

notification at the top of

the screen. We swipe

down from the top left of

the screen to see the

notification and see it is

from the Outlook.com

Team.

Normally we would touch

that window to view the

email, except we have not

yet touched the ‘Take me

on the notification and

then press that button.

We can now bring down

the notification and touch

it to view the email.

To go from there to the

Inbox, simply touch the

white left arrow top left.
