Legs [Make four alike} Begin at top edge and using colour to match the head cast on 7 sts. Beginning with a P row, st-sf 4 rows. B & T tightly. With right side of st-sf outside, oversaw the row ends together. This seam will be at centre back of the leg. Stuff leg, then bring seam to centre of cast on edge and oversaw across the cast on sts. To sew in place Pin cast on edges of front legs on either side and 2 sts away from head, just below the P row. Sew in place as pinned. Repeat with the back legs on either side and 2 sis away from centre back seam. Shell edgingpiece use the same colour as the shell. Begin at lower edge and using a 31/4mm [No 10, USA 3] needle cast on 46 sts. Change to 3rhm [No 11, USA 2] needles and work 2 rows in Kl, Pl rib. Cast off P wise and note that cast off edge is wrong side. Oversew the row ends together, then turn right side out. Place frill on the shell, with seam at centre back. Sew cast off edge in place, just above the P row. Flower decoration Begin at outer edge of the flower and use a contrasting colour to the tortoise pieces. Cast on 16 sts and P 1 row. Note that the P row is right side of the flower. Next row: (P2tog) to end - 8 s* B & T tightly. Catch the row ends together on wrong side. For the flower centre, use the same co|our as for the head and legs. Tie a loose knot at centre of a short length of yarn, winding yarn around three times, instead of once. Pull the knot tight. Sew the tail-ends of yarn through centre of flower, on either side of the B & T sis. Knot ends securely under the flower, then trim off yarn tali-ends near to the knot. For each leaf cut a 5cm [2in] length of green yarn, form it into a small loop and glue the tel|- ends together, leaving the loop free. Trim off tail-ends, leaving a short glued length to secure the loop. Glue loops securely to back of flower, then glue flower to contra top of the shell. Beginning with a.P row, st-st 5 rows. Shape top Ist row: (K3, K2tog) 4 times, (K2tog, K3) 4 times - 32 sts. 2nd and every following alternate row: P. 3rd row: (K2, K2tog) 4 times, (K2tog, K2) 4 times - 24 sts. 5th row: (Kl, K2tog) 4 times, (K2tog, Kl) 4 times - 16 sis. 7th row: (K2tog) to end - 8 sis. B & T loosely. To make up Gather along the cast on sis, pull up tightly and fasten off. Join the row ends, then tum right side out. Stuff to measure l7cm [63/4in] around at the marked P row. Pull up the B & T sis tightly and fasten off, but do not break off yarn. Using a darning needle, pass needle and yarn through the B & T sts and the contra of gathered cast on sts. Pass needle and yarn back again to the B & T sis. Pull yarn to make a small hollow depression in the base, then fasten off. Heda Begin at neck edge and using the colour required cast on 10 sts. Beginning with a P row, st-st 6 rows. B & T tightly. Oversew the row ends together. This seam will run underneath the head. Turn right side out Yarn requirements: Oddments, in the colours shown in the illustration, or colours of your choice. S ewin g t h r e a d: Black, for the mouth stitches. Cardboard: For the garden base, about the thickness of note pad backing pieces. Glue-on wiggle eyes: Two 5mm diameter for each tortoise. Measurements: The tortoises are 4cm [11/2in] in height. The garden is l3cm [Sin} square. Knitting needles: A pair of 3mm [No 11, USA 2]. Use these for all the pieces, unless otherwise stated. One 31/4mm [No 10, USA 3] needle for the shell edging. A pair of 4mm [No 8, USA 6] needles for the garden. Stuffing: Only small amounts are required. Next row: Kl (inc in next st, Kl) to end - 34 sts. Beginning with a P row, st-sf 41 rows, slipping the first sts P wise on P rows and the K sts K wise on K rows. Next row: Kl (K2tog, Kl) to end - 23 sts. Cast off. To make up use a length of white yam to gather all around the knitted piece as foHows. With P side of st-st facing, begin at end of the cast on edge and run a gathering stitch in and out of the adjacent supped row end sts. Now gather along the cast off sts, then the remaining slipped row ends sts as before. Finally gather along the cast on edge. Pull up the gathers slightly, then lay the grass piece aside for now. Cardboard base First cut a l3cm [Sin] square of white paper. Fold it into quarters, then round off the outer corners of the square. Open up the folds. Glue the paper square onto a piece of cardboard, then cut out the cardboard level with the paper. To assemble the pieces Place the cardboard piece centrally on K side of the knitted piece, with cast on and cast off edges aligned with two opposite straight cardboard edges. Pull up the gathers tightly, so that the upper surface is stretched over the cardboard, and the knitted edges are 81\ turned to the underside. Fasten off. To neaten and strengthen the underside of the Grass piece, make another cardboard base with rounded comers, using an 11.5cm [41/2irf] square of paper. Glue it centrally to underside of the Garden to cover the gathered edges. Bushes [Make four} Note: Use 4mm [No 8, USA 6] needles. Using a darker shade of green than the grass, cast on 5 sts. Work in g-st until the piece measures 8cm [3in], then B & T tightly. Gather up the cast on sts tightly, then fasten off. Starting at one end, fold the strip in half lengthwise and oversaw the two sets of row ends together all along the length. Use a length of matching yarn and secure it at one end of the strip. Now work four uneven running stitches ail along the fength through both thicknesses, turning the strip over to the reverse side between each running stitch as you go, Pull up the yarn so that the strip bunches up to measure about 6cm [2V2in] in length. Fasten off. Pin the bush to one curved comer of the grass piece, following the curve as illustrated. Sew the bush to the grass as pinned. Repeat with the other three bushes. Flowers Notes The garden has seven flowers, arranged around the tortoise in the illustration, but make as many as you wish. Using yellow cast on 10 sts, then B & T tightly. Right side of the flower is as the sts are slipped off the knitting needle. Catch the row ends together, then sew tail- ends into back of the flower and trim off excess lengths. To co|our the flower centres, moisten tip of the red pencil and press it into the B & T centre of the flower. Change to 3rhm [No 11, USA 2] needles andwork 2 rows in Kl, Pl rib.Cast off P wise and note that cast off edge iswrong side.

Oversew the row ends together, then turn rightside out. Place frill on the shell, with seam atcentre back. Sew cast off edge in place, justabove the P row.

Flower decorationBegin at outer edge of the flower and use acontrasting colour to the tortoise pieces.Cast on 16 sts and P 1 row.Note that the P row is right side of the flower.

Next row: (P2tog) to end - 8 s*B & T tightly.

Catch the row ends together on wrong side.

For the flower centre, use the same co|our asfor the head and legs.Tie a loose knot at centre of a short length ofyarn, winding yarn around three times, insteadof once. Pull the knot tight.

Sew the tail-ends of yarn through centre offlower, on either side of the B & T sis.Knot ends securely under the flower, then trimoff yarn tali-ends near to the knot.

For each leaf cut a 5cm [2in] length of greenyarn, form it into a small loop and glue the tel|-ends together, leaving the loop free. Trim offtail-ends, leaving a short glued length to securethe loop.
