Outline
As part of our strategic planning to manage human, financial, and physical resources in our school library, our team of professionals collaborated to develop this action plan. We have been allotted $1500 to enhance our current collection and after reviewing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), have decided as a group to focus on standards 5-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms and 5-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics. Our selections were not made hastily – we referred to professional journals and sites for reviews of informational resources before adding them here today.

Outline (continued)
Our team consisted of SALT team members and Science teachers Mrs. Kim Kanofsky and Ms. Sam Crotty, as well as our School Library Media Professional, Ms. Lindsay Zucker.

Outline (continued)
In our presentation, Ms. Zucker will cover the Next Generation Science Standards we chose and why we chose them, our collection policy, and our process when choosing informational materials.
Ms. Zucker is currently attending another meeting regarding Common Core State Standards and has pre-recorded an introduction for us.

Outline (continued)
Mrs. Kanofsky will discuss who will benefit from these selections and how they will benefit, how these new materials will meet student and teacher needs matching standards to the resources, and how we are reaching out to our community to ensure informational resources are not only in place, but also that the community is aware of how our students are benefitting.

Outline (continued)
Ms. Crotty will finish our presentation with discussion of specific informational resources that we have chosen and how they will help students achieve the highest level of understanding in these content areas.

5-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms
After meeting with our Science Subject Area Leadership Team (SALT), we determined that two standards in particular require enhanced informational resources. The first standard for which we decided to purchase informational materials is:
5-LS1 From Molecules to Organisms:
Structures and Processes
![Page 9: Next generation science standards collection development action plan](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042714/549a4ad2ac7959132e8b5b59/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
5-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics
The second standard we decided to improve upon was 5-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics.

Decisions, decisions
Collection Policy Review professional sources like School Library
Journal and Booklist Amazon, Baker & Taylor, Lakeshore Learning,
Davidson Titles, and Titlewave were our main sources for purchasing informational resources
Met with Vendors from Davidson Titles, Baker & Taylor, and Titlewave
Met as a group to review and discuss Matched NGSS standards to CCSS to
informational resources

Put Students First
In our discussions with the Science Subject Area Leadership Team (SALT), we knew that the change in studying life cycles, plants, water cycles, and ecosystems from 4th grade to 5th grade would also mean that we would need to improve our selection of materials on these topics to better serve our students. In our efforts to improve student learning, we will :
Order resources specifically for teachers
![Page 12: Next generation science standards collection development action plan](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042714/549a4ad2ac7959132e8b5b59/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Put Students First (continued)
Select appropriate informational resources for our 5th grade students
Provide students with collaborative instructional time on how to research in many platforms including databases, print materials, DVDs, experiments, and other online resources.
Incorporate CCSS requirements with NGSS Evaluate and assess progress of students
through student presentations, journal entries, exit slips, polls
![Page 13: Next generation science standards collection development action plan](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042714/549a4ad2ac7959132e8b5b59/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Community Collaborations
It is important to be involved in our community. Our school library media professional will work with the local public library to make sure that they:
carry CCSS and NGSS materials for these standards
have several databases available for use by students
have trained staff available to teach students how to use the databases
![Page 14: Next generation science standards collection development action plan](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042714/549a4ad2ac7959132e8b5b59/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Community Collaborations
Our committee will also open up the school library to the community through an Open House:
New information resources will be on display
Final projects will be on display Best presentations/representations will
be showcased and students will present them to the community
