We would like to welcome everyone to the newsletter ,
striving to achieve new breakthroughs, particularly in the critical area of
accumulation and dissemination of knowledge relating to the value and
impact of researches conducted in Zoology, focused on moving biological,
environmental and health researches into action. Through
we pledge to work tremendously hard in order to set new research and
academic priorities and strategic direction for the department.
T h e aims to prepare a knowledge workforce compa-
rable to the best in the world, laying emphasis on group projects so that
our students learn to be cooperative and productive team members. Our
struggle is meant to support a vibrant community of excellent researches,
capacity building and knowledge translation initiatives.
These are exciting times for scientific community and we welcome partici-
pation of all concerned in the endeavor. It is not a new movement. It
started decades ago by Professor Babar Mirza and his associates, who in
1920, laid the foundation of an Urdu newsletter Risala-e-Haiwaniyat , then.
The journey since has never been smooth. The major obstacle was and is
even now, the lack of consistent financial assistance to the newsletter. In
between, there has been sincere but abortive attempts to revive the historic
‘Risala. The inaugural issue of put on record the
services of all those efforts. And hope that success can only be derived
from Allah. We express the appreciation of diligent efforts of all students,
scholars and faculty members of the department of Zoology to revive the
attempt yet again. Hopefully, would serve the best
way to test for context bias and research applicability findings with a re-
porting issue.

The Messages
It is a matter of great pleasure for me to know that the Zoological Society of the Depart-
ment of Zoology is striving for a de novo effort in bringing out the news letter „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟.
I hope that publication of such a magazine would provide an opportunity to the young creative
minds to exploit their potential to the fullest and augment well for enlightening modern and latest
researches in Zoological Sciences.
I take this opportunity to congratulate the entire team of „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ specially the
editorial team and hope that it would be a great success laced with academic, literary and creative
achievements.
Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis
I am happy to learn that the Zoological Society of the Department of Zoology is preparing
to bring out a Newsletter „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ after a lapse of about twenty long years. The effort is
really praiseworthy. I congratulate the editorial board members of „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ for making
the dream come true. I am sure „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ will be a remarkable addition to the literary
work.
I wish „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ a great success.
Prof. Masood Ahmad
I feel pleasure to announce that new effort has been made to revive the Zoological Soci-
ety. The Department of Zoology is coming up with another novel approach to achieve this aim
through „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟. Ever since the Risala-e- Hawaniyat started with Prof. M. B. Mirza in
1930, it met with uncertainty of publication for want of funds. An effort in 1987, also had the
same fate. I hope that funds will not come in the way of its publication anymore.
There is always a necessity to tap the literary talents of the scholars community and to
record for posterity the academic achievements of the department. In this light the entire editorial
board is to be complemented for their sincere efforts in bringing the „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ and I
hope that it will be a regular feature in the coming years.
I wish „NEWZ'OOLOGY‟ every success.
Prof. Irfan Ahmad

T he Department of Zoology was instituted as a constituent
section of the MAO College in 1906 and was upgraded
as an independent unit, imparting teaching at B.Sc. level in
1922 with Dr. M. Sharif as its first Chairman and Dr. A. Jab-
bar Farooqi as the only other member of the teaching staff.
The services of Dr. Sharif were later acquired by the Zoologi-
cal Survey of India and therefore, he left for Calcutta in 1925.
Professor Mohammad Babar Mirza joined the Department as
Chairman in January 1930. His arrival ushered in an era
which augured well for future monumental developments.
Professor Mirza moulded the destiny of the Department dur-
ing a long 30 years of his tutelage, into what it is today.
Through his ceaseless efforts he placed the Department on the
zoological map of the world and installed the sublime tradi-
tions of teaching and research. Soon after the commencement
of post-graduate teaching in 1930 and shifting of the Depart-
ment to its present premises, he even instituted the specializa-
tion of Entomology and Helminthology in 1931 and 1932; and
later Parasitology and Ichthyology and Fisheries in 1951 and
1956. He retired from the service and left the Department on
stable and sound foundation in 1961.
Subsequently, Professor M.A. Basir took over the
department and remained as Head till October, 1966, when his
tragic demise took him away from us. During this short span
Professor M.A. Basir founded Plant Nematology as a distinct
discipline for postgraduate teaching and research and firmly
established and made certain to recognize this field nation-
ally.
Professor Shah Mashhood Alam succeeded Professor
M.A. Basir in October, 1966. He served the University with
devotion and dedication for about 38 years. During his tenure
the Department made all round progress, created the largest
cadre of highly qualified teachers and developed effective
teaching and research facilities comprising fully equipped
laboratories. His other achievements included: a field station,
a newly constructed animal house and an exquisitely designed
Insectary. The Sections of Entomology, Parasitology, Ichthy-
ology and Fisheries, Plant Nematology and Genetics acquired
prominence during this period. Professor Alam, completed his
long tenure and gracefully retired.
Thereafter, Professor Nawab Hasan Khan, a distin-
guished scholar and the doyen of its alumni, succeeded Pro-
fessor S. M. Alam in July, 1981 as Head of the Department.
In between, Prof. Khan also acted in a similar capacity in
1973 breifly and had given a reflection of his pragmatic capa-
bilities by establishing the Sections of Plant Nematology and
Genetics as distinct disciplines for postgraduate teaching and
research. Professor Khan gave a new dimension to the aca-
demic and administrative spheres of the Department. He was
also entrusted with the reins of the Faculty of Science as its
Dean, and his continued stewardship provided hope and
promise for academics and research. Thereafter, many chair-
men strived for new heights and research excellence of the
department. All are greatfully acknowledged for their efforts.
During these 90 years, the Department has contributed
to the national and international academic obligations to the
biological community. From a small one-room offspring, it
has grown into a well developed institution, with all the essen-
tial requisites for advanced teaching and research. Its schools
of specialization in Entomology, Parasitology, Ichthyology
and Fisheries, Plant Nematology and Genetics have attained
new heights and acquired international recognition. Hope-
fully, the trend continued to be uninterrupted.
