From The Founders! When you’ve come far enough to not go back, but not far enough to reach where you’re supposed to be you start asking questions:• What am I doing here? • Did I miss God and make a mistake again? • Am I going the right way? In any case, these are very good questions unless the result of these questions are not answered and only leave doubt. Matthew 21:21 - Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have FAITh, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this moun-tain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

This magazine is the first of many things God has called my family and I to do. I pray that it touches and inspires you to take immediate action on any unction God has put in your heart. Please enjoy and give us your feedback on what you believe we can improve, change, include or just give us a testimony if this magazine has helped improve your life in any way.

Thus far in my career, I have travailed in newsrooms giving birth to stories on deadlines; donned busi-ness casual attire and some heels to till corporate cubicle farms; and molded the spongey minds of 26 fourth graders. Look at your life. Do you see a dead end? Do your hopes and dreams seem to be nothing, but passing thoughts speeding by you? Do you feel like nothing good is happening and nothing good will happen?

Then your life journey has taken you to a place where there is noth-ing left, but God.

During these trying times many people seem dismayed. It seems that what they have lost is all they see. Many have lost jobs after their 10th, 15th or 20th anniversary at their company. Many people are in debt up to their ears. Many have lost cars, houses and even loved ones, but this is not the time to lay down the towels or cover our head in bed. Nor is it the time to allow our imaginations and thoughts to control the way we feel. God’s word tells us to, “cast down im-aginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ,” as stated in 2 Corin-

thians 10:3-4. In Philippians 4:8-9, the Apostle Paul tells us to replace the negative thoughts with posi-tive thoughts or imaginations and reminds us to think on things that are true, honest, pure and lovely. So, in the middle of negative imagina-tions you must make a conscious decision to think positively.

My beloved, if we allow our thoughts, feelings and our emo-tions to dictate to us our next move we will not be ready for what lies ahead. If we are not careful, we might start thinking and act-ing crazy making wrong decisions physically, spiritual and in other ar-eas of your life. God’s words teaches us to think first, then react (James 1:19, Proverbs 18:12, Proverbs 3:5). So, beloved if there is a cold Mon-

day morning in your life this will be the time to put on your shoes and tie them tight, put on your coat

and button it up, and focus on the word of God that is already hidden in your heart and stand on it. God said that he would write his word in our hearts and in our minds, and we will not have to ask anyone what he had said to us in that day, because we all will understand him (Hebrews 1:8-10; 10:16). God wants all of us to understand him when he speaks personally to us, so his word will come with simplicity, and it will always line up with the scriptures. No one will be confused, but we all will be able to hear his voice and understand him so we can turn to him anytime. When nothing is left for you to do, or when all hope is gone, God really wants you to turn to him. The story of Job was centered on a man that had everything one could ever hope for in life. He lost it all in a very short time. He lost his lands, houses and children, his wife and friends, his career seemed hope-less. But, Job refused to lose hope in God. Job lost his health, but he held on to his sanity. When nothing else was left, Job turned to God. It states that Job said, “If God was to take his very life that he would still serve him” (Job 13:15). Job knew the source of his strength. He knew the author and the finisher of his faith, and he chose to trust him to

the very end. Speaking of the very end, Job received everything he had

lost back. God restored all that was taken from Job (a new wife, more children, lands, houses, health, re-spect, etc.), proven that he wasn’t the one that had destroy (wrecked) Job’s life, but the enemy (Satan) was the one that came to steal, kill and de-stroy Job.

Jesus said, “He came that we might have life and that we might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). So, when nothing else is left, but God, we still have him. God will always be there for us. He will never leave us, because of his love for us. You know the story, “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son (Jesus) that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have ev-erlasting life. For God sent not his Son (Jesus) into the world to con-demn the world, but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:16-17).

CHEF BOBBY JONES SHOWS US HOW TO MAKE:

SHRIMP VEGGIE TEMPORE OVER FRIED RICE {next issue}Article By: Patrick Gilder & Photograph By: Lamar Rashaw

I have worked in corporate Marriott hotels in my early days for over 12 years. Starting at a low position as a station attendant, not having one idea as to what I was getting myself into. My first two years felt like hell, especially when I didn’t have a clue how to cook. Within two years I real-ized I was good and really had a passion and could hang with the best temper flaring, knife throwing chefs, whomI came to respect and learn from. There were over a dozen very talented Executive Chefs from dif-ferent parts of the world. Growing up in San Diego with a “South of the border” flare and with a southern cuisine background with the help of my mother and family, it opened my eyes and palette to a South meets West with an explosive French twist. Hey lets face it, this country is one big melting pot, which should be reflected in the way we eat. Chef Bob Anthony - [email protected]

My husband and I Love to go out and drive, drive, drive and look at small mansions in great neighborhoods, and dream bigger together.

WWW . K I R E N EG I L D E R .COMTime To Worship Coming Soon 2011

ONE ON ONE WITH

KirEnE GildErInterviewed By: Editor

NVi: Why do you believe God choose you to fill this task? kirene: I believe that God has called me for such a time as this; to minis-ter to people that may not be reached by other music. He knows that I will never give up, and Luke 4:16-22 is what he gave me to stand on.

NVi: What is Time to Worship about?

kirene: Time to worship is focusing on Worship, whether it’s your walk, or you spending more time in prayer, or taking your worship to another level. I believe Worship is your com-munication with god, telling and showing him that you do love him, because you’re doing everything to be made holy, set apart, and uncom-mon for him. So when you here a time to worship; stop and think “Are you living blameless before God?”.

NVi: When did you decide that you wanted to be a Christian artist?

kirene: I always knew that I would be singing in some shape, form, or fashion. But diffidently after God revealed my calling, that is when I started to become serious about my

craft that God gave me. Last year is when I took the assignment that God had called me to do, to lead the lost to Christ through music .

NVi: As a profession there are cer-tain qualities that you posses that other artist may not, what tips would you give an inspiring artist?

kirene: I believe that when writing any worship or praise music that it ministers to you first. And when it ministers to you and really touches you, it will be easier to minister to

others. But if the songs you write have no meaning to it, or no truth in the words then it

will not be able to deeply break those prison chains that imprison some people, and they stay in bondage. So basically I am saying “believe in what you do!”.

NVi: What kind of Women in your life have inspired you, and helped you develop as a woman of God, and as a artist?

kirene: My close aunts really made sure me and my sisters were en-couraged in the Lord and to stay in church. Growing up they were our spiritual influence and I love them thank God for them being there for us. Many women from my home church Faith Christian Center have helped me to become a better per-son. A lot of my understanding of being a woman of God first comes from Minister. Erica Moore who re-

ally nurtured me and was really hard on me (laughing) giving me what I needed and not what I wanted, but always pointing me back to Jesus. I love her so much and really thank God for having her in my life! She always tells me she is committed to see me win!I don’t know anyone personally who is an artist but my inspiration really started with Hillsong… Darlene zs-chech, Brooke Fraiser and band re-ally inspired me and helped me to look out side the box with my mu-sic. When I first started to listen to Hillsong I was first introduced by the song “Hosanna”, I really fell in love with that song. The anointing on Hillsong’s music really guided me to worship with my heart. I love Hill-song!!!!!!Also, Israel Houghton and New Breed…. His music is anointed and beautiful as well.

NVi: Being a artist is going to put you in the spotlight, and could get difficult at times. What do you and your husband do to help relax?

kirene: My husband and I Love to go out and drive, drive, drive and look at small mansions in great neighbor-hoods, and dream bigger together. Well, At least I know I love it! (gig-gling). Or we lock our selves in the house and have movie night and piz-za with our fam bam! When we get lucky with baby sitters we go out on a wonderful date. I love my hubby!!

NVi: Well kirene we thank you for your time and will be in agreement with you as you continue on in what God has called you to do.

ivine encounter of the call. The most im-portant aspect of this subject I believe is the confirmation of the call. And I’m not talking about the confirmation that comes by way of the human agency be it prophetic utterance, word of knowledge, etc that may come by way of the fivefold

order that God has established to edify His body. Basically speak-ing we refer to the human sphere or arena. This confirmation must be experienced by the individual man, woman, boy or girl through a divine encounter with God in whatever way He chooses to manifest this encounter. “You have to know,” that you know that God has called you to the ministry. I implore you to seek God’s confirmation to the call never move off the human sphere alone. The encounter of Moses (Exodus 3:1-12) and the encounter of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:4-5). demonstrates genuine and unmis-takable encounters these men had with God concerning their indi-vidual call. That is not to say yours will be the same. This is why I said earlier this will come by whatever way God may choose. The bottom line is that the human sphere confirmation should

always be a confirmation to the divine encounter.

EMBRACING THE PREDESTINED CALL TO MINISTRY AND SERVICE

Even when you know you are called, you will still struggle with the why-me, or look-at-me syn-drome defined as looking at all the evident things that you believe disqualifies you as the called of God. But I want you to remember something: You are never at your beginning what you shall be at your end. In the fourth chapter of Exodus, Moses began to speak to God out of his own self-rejection saying, “They won’t believe me or listen to me.” He even went on to say that he had no eloquence of speech to qualify. This is typical of every servant called of God. We all have mental, emotional and spiritual conditions that God will process through all of us. In the first chapter of Jeremiah, the prophet had similar speech of self-disqualification when told that he was called. He said that he was a child and could not speak, but in verse eight of the same chapter, God addresses the real issue saying “be not afraid of their faces.” Fear was the real issue.

You must understand that all you are to be and all you will need is in the call. God asked Moses, “What is that you have in your hand?” and he sent Aaron with him. He touched Jeremiah’s mouth for the speaking of the word. The Word of God states in Romans 12:2 we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. In the Greek, transformed means metamorphosis. And my friend, that is a process. This is why I say again, you are never at your beginning what you shall be at your end. So in your current condition you won’t likely see any manifested evident qualifications, but they are there. As you walk and live out your process in the call, they will become manifest to you. But be patient, because the process will take time and you walk it out first by faith, then by yielding to the Holy Spirit. So be patient, because faith is never in a hurry because it knows its destination. We are only successful in this process to the degree that we yield ourselves to the work of the Spirit.

THE WHY ME, SYNDROME?

Vision/Purpose: The word of God proclaims in Prov-erbs 29:18 that where there is no vision, the people perish; but he that keepeth the Law happy is he. Web-ster’s New World Dictionary defines vision as the abil-ity to imagine or foresee what cannot actually be seen. According to the Word of God, we know that is the eye of faith at work. The scripture gives us to know in

Romans 8:28 that all things are working for good to those that love Him and are called according to His purpose. Again 2 Timothy 1:9 tells us that we have been called with a holy calling according to His pur-pose and grace. This word purpose as seen in Strong’s Concordance is proth’-es-is which means a setting

forth, proposal (intention). Continue on page 32...

EMBRACING THE PREDESTINED CALL TO MINISTRY AND SERVICE

Therefore, as God processes you out in the call, you should began to understand that the promises of God produces faith remembering faith cometh by hearing. Now, faith moves you into vision and by vision you began to see the purpose of God as he has set it forth what he proposes His intentions. This is most important because if you can-not understand the general will and purpose of God, how will you understand through your pro-cessing when he is imparting vision and purpose in your personal life? That being said, all vision should began and end in and with the Word of God, which has his purpose (set forth/what he proposes/his intentions). For there is one king-dom already established and ever expanding, this is the one He has called you on behalf of not to build others. Your uniqueness is cure for rejection. Psalms 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fear-fully and wonderfully made. There is something I would like for you to consider. We talked to you earlier about the places God will process you through both souls and spiritual conditions to be dealt with. Did you ever consider the truth of how unique you are? You are the only one of you in God’s economy. His call of you is specific and with your uniqueness in mind yes, right down to your DNA, fingerprints, iris you are set apart from any other individual on the face of the planet. By these things, even with twins, quads and so o, God keeps producing unique humanity. God created you to be an original, not a copy. So no man or devil qualifies to reject you. Accept the truth and

reality that this call is connected to the individual original God has made you to be. This revelation came to me at a rather young time in my own ministry. I had the divine encounter with him say-ing, “I call you a teacher in my body; also I have placed in your spirit the gifts of healing.” Now, when he told me this he also told me that I was to go to my pastor and tell him what he had said. Then, he wanted me to separate myself two weeks alone with him. During the time I was away from the church, I needed to go see my younger sister. Now, this happened to be at her home church. While there the pastor of that church, who knew me, asked me how things were going. Well, excit-edly, I told him about my call to ministry. He said, “Well what are you doing now?” I told him that I had been away from the church at least a week as the Lord wanted to minister to me. He instantly barked at me, “Boy! You better get yourself back over there under the wings of your pastor. That’s what I always say you young ministers are always trying to make your own way; that’s not God.” He said other things, but if there was a mouse hole in the wall, I felt I could have walked in to it. Anyhow, I left that place rejected, dejected and confused and now tears were rolling down my face. That’s when I heard the Holy Spirit while I was driving, “Well, if you can’t endure that, you might as well go on home and forget it.” My tears dried up like turning off a water faucet, and I said, “Forget what Lord? Forget going to heaven? For-get the ministry?” Silence. He said nothing. When

I got home he directed me to I Timothy 1:8-12. Verse 11 is where he stopped me and said, “Son, I have committed my gospel to your trust.” I contin-ued to read verse 12; he said, “I have enabled you. I have counted you faithful, and I’m the one who put you in the ministry.” He told me to never again worry about what man would have to say about my calling. He began to talk to me about humanity and my uniqueness in his plan for my life; how it and the call were connected. I pray that the same Holy Spirit who touched me also will edify you as you answer and accept the call of ministry on your life.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

I come from a cross-cultural background… my fa-ther was black and my mother is white. My mother became pregnant at the age of 17 in Waterloo, Iowa. Obviously, it was a bad situation during the early 70’s in a small Midwestern town. Her parents gave her two choices: either have a back-alley abortion or be disowned by her family. Thank God she chose life. Ultimately, she was disowned and abandoned by my biological father. She ended up moving to San Diego, California. There she was, eight months pregnant, alone and thousands of miles from home. One day, while walking down the street, this lady pulled up to her in a Volkswagen Bug.

Israel Houghton says his name testi-fies to the goodness of God…

Looking back at Israel Houghton’s life story, it is plain to see that without God’s intervention, he might never have been

born. Here is Israel’s testimony in his own words.

The woman got out of her car and respectful-ly, yet boldly began to share the Gospel with my mom. Words of life and hope began to overtake the words of rejection and abandon-ment she had grown accustomed to. There on the street corner, she ended up on her knees where she cried out to God and committed her life to Jesus Christ. The lady gave my mother a Bible and my mom began reading at page one.

She saw the name Israel all through it. That’s how I got my name! My mother even-tually met and married my stepfather, who is really my dad, when I was one year old. We grew up in church because he went into full-time ministry as a pastor. You see, God had a plan from the very beginning! I’m often asked by skeptics why I’m as passionate about worshiping God as I am. The answer is simple for me. In this age of disposable relationships, I could easily have become a statistic and, at best, a distant memory of a youthful mistake.

Instead, a Sovereign God rescued my mother and me and gave us hope, a future and a testimony of the providence of God. The very least I can do is enter into His gates with thanksgiving, His courts with a passionate praise and eventually bow before His throne in intimate worship.

PREADING ThE MESSAGE OF GOD’S LOVE AS MANIFESTED ThROUGh MANKIND SET TO A SOUNDTRACK OF “SOUL MUSIC” AT ITS MOST PROFOUND, INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST/COMPOSER/PRO-S

DUCER ISRAEL hOUGhTON hAS DONE IT AGAIN.Building on the theme of his Grammy-winning 2009 of-fering The Power of One, Houghton returned to the stu-dio, this time London’s famed Abbey Road Studios, to re-cord his new masterwork, Love God. Love People., with a little help from his friends. There, holed up in a hallowed space of classic recordings by Rock royalty The Beatles, Houghton and his crack team of co-producers Aaron Lindsey and Tommy Sims, along with guests Fred Ham-mond, kirk Franklin, and Take 6’s Claude V. Mcknight, Mark kibble and Joey kibble, created a new ode to love in this epic, 12-song cycle. The result, Love God. Love People. (Integrity Mu-sic/Columbia), delivers the musical versatility, profound lyrics and galvanizing displays of vocal and instrumen-tal virtuosity fans have come to expect from the multiple Grammy and Stellar Award winner. And it is the perfect and fitting manner in which to celebrate Israel Houghton’s 20 against-the-grain years of music ministry and over a decade of his group New Breed’s mission of creating “king-dom music.” “During my career, a lot of people told me to stop trying to merge styles,” Houghton reflects of hissignature blending of pop, rock, Latin and R&B influences. “But the times I feel most true to myself are when I am intentionally creating dialogue through music that allows everybody to get involved in the conversation. I thank God that I stayed the course. Now, people are saying, ‘Wow, your music is fresh!’ Ten years ago, people were saying it was confusing! But when God puts something in yourheart, you’ve got to stick with it.” Over the course of the past two decades, Houghton has traveled the world and seen up close the best and the worst of the human spirit at work. He is heartened to report that, of late, he has witnessed great improvement, which inspired and fortified the overall theme of this dynamic new disc. “This whole concept of a love revolution - think-ing beyond yourself - is the great equalizer to our theol-ogy,” Houghton states. “Because of the music we make as

New Breed, we get invited into a lot of worlds that other-wise would not co-exist. That’s a huge part of our life’s mis-sion - to be effective in all kinds of streams. Even though we may differ in theologies, we as Christians are still the ‘Love People.’ If we can agree that Jesus is Lord, we can connect on what The Lord said, which is ‘Love The Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, your might and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself. Couple that with Matthew: 25 ‘Love to the least of these,’ and there’s a lot we can do together as Christians instead of focusing on things we don’t believe.

“Love God. Love People. is a simple yet pivotal statement about the essence of what life here on Earth ultimately

comes down to.”

And now it’s time to make a change... Life gets better / It just gets better when we / We look around and

see all of humanity / Waiting on someone / Someone is you and me.

If I wasn’t an art-ist, I would still be an activist – out trying to make a difference and giving a voice to those who don’t have one.” – Israel Houghton

In addition to the obvious Biblical command found in the title song, the heart of the album may lie in the haunting “Others,” penned by Houghton and his wife Meleasa. The song began when the couple came up with separate parts for what they thought would be different songs. But when they sat down at the piano, Houghton began to feel that the lyrics might go well together. Within minutes of opening to this possibil-

ity, the song was born. “Meleasa has a tendency to write strong, raw lyrics like the opening lines of this song: “ I see the state of the world and it grieves me. I tend to come with more of the lighter ‘I wanna love like you love, wanna love others the way that you love me.’ That makes for a lot of tension and release in what we write which is what music always needs.” That in-nate sense of music chemistry has helped Houghton create a canon of songs that have become favorites in houses of faith and on radio dials across the globe. Having written or co-written 11 CCLI.

Top 500 favorites, Houghton uses his multicultural upbringing as a key reference point in his boundary-defying music, inspiring people of all ages, races and cultures to come together under the banner of Christ. Renowned as a worship leader in Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood church in Houston, Houghton has also led hundreds of thousands in worship at events, churches and festivals around the world. In 1995, he and Meleasa founded New Breed Ministries, an organization comprised of noted musicians and singers who serve within their respective churches and, together, serve the Church atlarge. For their efforts, they have been fittingly graced with two Gold-selling albums, three Grammy Awards, six Dove Awards, two Stellar Awards and a Soul Train Award. Summing up Love God. Love People., and the culmination of his first 20 years in music ministry, Houghton states, “For this season of my life, this is what I’m still passionate about. If I wasn’t an artist, I would still be an activist - out try-ing to make a difference and giving a voice to those who don’t have one. New Breed could have easily found its end at any time overnight. Not because the music wasn’t good, but because we had failed up to that point to discover our real purpose. It was not to build a platform under myself but to build a platform under others. Once we as a team grasped the understanding that ‘Strength is for service not status’ (Romans: 15), we knew our success was not about winning awards, selling platinum CDs or selling out concert halls. It was about taking whatev-er momentum we could gather and giving it back in service. That’s what has kept me and New Breed relevant, focused and effective. And I am grateful that God has surrounded me with people who have that same heart.”

NEED A CAREER RESCUE?Out of work? Want more out of your career? Frustrated because you don’t know how to get there? The good news is, you’re not alone. The even better news is... I am here to offer practical strategies that will help you position yourself where you want to be and to show you how to earn the salary that you deserve!

My name is Brenda M. Cunningham and I am the owner of ROYAL Resume Services, a company dedicated to serving your career growth and education needs. I hold the coveted designation of Certified Pro-fessional Resume Writer, I am a member of Career Directors Inter-national to stay abreast of the latest trends, and I have been featured on Monster.com, kFYI, and in the Arizona Republic. Having been in the resume writing industry for nearly four years, I have already seen several trends come and go. If I, who actually follow the industry havedocumented at least 20 changes in the past 4 years, how are you the part time job seeker going to keep up? For example do you know how

by ROYALRESUMEAZ.COM

to write your resume so that it focuses on the employ-ers needs and NOT your objectives? Do you know how to leverage social media in your 21st century job search and business expansion? These effective mech-anisms are what I specialize in and what I will be shar-ing with you in this publication.

Now that you have read what qualifies me to offer advice in these areas, let’s get to some learning... This month I want to share with you some practical job search strategies that will help you get results!

1Make sure your resume is focused on what you want to do, if you are flexible and are interested in multiple job titles or industries then create different versions of your resume.

2 Make sure that your key credentials are promi-nently placed at the very top of your resume. Also ac-cording to several HR Recruiters that shared some in-side information, there is no longer a need to include an objective, just a brief professional summary thatparaphrases what you can offer to your potential em-ployer.

3 Establish a profile and network on LinkedIn or other social networking sites, and then useyour network to request recommendations and job referrals.

4 When applying to positions on line, apply direct-ly on the company website and if applicable, create a new profile as opposed to copying and pasting your existing resume. Doing this allows the HR personnel to filter by certain information fields which cannotand will not be done with a pasted resume.

5 You need to know that the unemployment rate is continuing to grow and the number of companies hir-ing is continuing to shrink! You need to have a con-nection in this day and age to get a response from your resume submission. NOTE: This is not always true forthose individuals with very specialized and rare skill sets.

6 While performing your search, try to obtain new credentials that would make you a more viable can-didate!

Page 53: NEWVISION Magazine - The Aplha Issue

7 Don’t rely on a single job search engine (like careerbuilder.com) but rather expand your search (ex. Try indeed.com, dice.com, thelad-ders.com, jobing.com, etc…)

If you are unemployed, underemployed, or sim-ply want to arm yourself with information for future progress, then this column is a must read with every issue. We’ll continue to dig deeper and provide more and more detail pertaining to different aspects of the employment process. Hopefully these pointers will help you along in your search. I know it seems discouraging to bein a transition period, but please be encouraged.

Try to see the situation as an opportunity to try something new. And of course for your profes-sional resume writing needs, please contact ROYAL Resume Services at 602-570-7593 or on the web at www.RoyalResumeAz.com.

May many new doors of opportunity be opened for you!

GOD, FASHION, AND YOUIn honor of the alpha edition of New Vision magazine, I would like to acknowledge the One who loved me first, God—my Daddy and the Alpha in my life. 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us that, “Each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others.” It is my hope that I may serve you with the passion God has given me. God gives us inspiration and passion for many different things, whether big or small, and in the grand scheme of things all of it is ultimately designed for His purpose. Let’s not forget that after all we are made in His image (Genesis 1:27).

I can’t recall when I fell in love with fashion. Perhaps it was when I got my first job and was able to buy my own clothes or maybe it’s al-ways been in my DNA. DNA? Well, let me share with you a revelation that hopefully will enlighten you. If you love God and fashion. but don’t quite know how the two correlate, let’s take it back to the beginning. In Genesis 3, when Adam and Eve ate of the fruit from the forbidden tree, they became naked and were ashamed. Now, if we read further, verse 21 brings attention to how God made tunics and clothed them. In other words, He fashioned them. How exciting is it to know that before Chris-tian Dior, Donna karan, Lanvin, and all the other designers of today, God was, is and will forever be the best fashion designer there ever was!

QUESTION? Have you ever loved something to the point of thinking about it all the time? Maybe it’s writing, cooking, singing, exercising? I’d have to raise my right hand and say, “Guilty.” But here’s the funny part, in as much as I am passionate about fashion, we have a love-hate relationship. I mean, perhaps, I’m a perfectionist, but it is important that all pieces from head to toe are strategically placed together. Many people are afraid of what others will think if they go outside the box. Fashion is about taking chances, being bold and making a statement.

Here’s food for thought: “Fashion doesn’t make you; you make fashion.” I encourage everyone to find their own sense of style—a personal style that describes you. It’s quite easy to look fabulous without having to spend a lot of money; it’s all about being creative. But before we can paint the picture, we need a canvas.

1. New to Neutrals? Every person should have neutral colors in their wardrobe like blacks, whites, creams and greys. Black, a popular color in fashion for many women, has been an age-old trick to look slimmer and lean. White, I love white, no matter the season, it’s a great way to look innocent and pure. Add cream colors

GOD, FASHION, AND YOUto your wardrobe, this is an excellent way to create a softer look, especially with accessories. Add pearls and

it will turn your look into elegance. You can never go wrong with those choices. 2. Paint Out Loud. Color is a great way to express yourself and it often reflects your mood. I recommend using colors that compliment your skin tone. Don’t be afraid to play, branch out and experiment with colors. If you’re unsure on how to put colors together, buy clothing that has a great color palette such as maxi dresses, skirts and blouses. This will make it easier for you to

coordinate and accessorize and apply your own special touch. 3. In the Black. There are several items every woman must have in their closet. Hands down, the every closet has to house the faithful black dress (preferably knee length). A black dress is vital be¬cause, it can be worn anywhere— church, work, dinner. 4. Doodle. Pencil skirts are stylish and look great with any blouse. It can be versatile whether you desire to be casual or so¬phisticated, while giving you shape. 5. Set Fires! Blazers—I just love them—especially with jeans and a nice top. Not only are blazers fashionable, but it serves as a great method to hiding what I call “extra love” in the midsection. I love cardigans as well, especially if your style leans more towards the “college-prep” look. 6. Diva Denim. I suggest investing in two good pairs of jeans. Skinny jeans are what’s “in” nowadays. They look nice and will do exact¬ly as they are called: Make you look skinny. Also, I recommend trying a dark denim straight-wide leg jean; they have a way of giving length and looking lean. In colder weathers, black tights can be incorporated in your wardrobe by wearing them under skirts or dresses. 7. Cue the Band. Choose to decorate the ensemble. A choice of acces-sories, such as belts and jewelry, can turn a simple outfit into a great outfit. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings are the essentials of most fashion statements. Bear in my mind that sometimes less is more.8. Walk it Out. This last piece is crucial when completing your look. A pair of pumps should be your statement piece, with boots ideal for the

winter. When it comes to heels, a variety of colors and styles are recommended in every closet. Whether you’re black or white, skinny or plus size, short or tall, fashion is what you make it. It is your very own style linking you to the Master Designer. God fashioned us with clothing, but he also clothes us with boldness and confidence. We can dress in all the nicest and most fashionable clothes, but what really sepa¬rates us from society is knowing who we are as women of God. Mary, Mary said it best with their title song, “It’s the God in Me.” I believe that a great sense of style coupled with the confidence of God equals FIERCE!

Ladies, I encourage you to explore the world of fashion. Trust in your judgment with your wardrobe and know that it’s not the clothes that define you, but the God in you. Remember: You are fierce!

Interviewed by PATRICK L. GILDER

One on One with

Arthur “Buddy” StrongNVi: Why do you think your name is highly requested by major artist?

Buddy: I really believe that there are three things that lead to my success in ministry as well as my career. 1) The first thing I would say is “God’s Plan for My Life!” I believe that he opened the door for me period. When he wants you to do some-thing he’ll open ways, and shine the light on you. 2) The second way that I would say is he gave me a gift, and I’ve worked hard over the years to develop that talent. I think peo-ple see my talent, and he’s given me something special and unique. A lot of people say my style is a really unique combination of old and new.

3) Connections and Relationships – I think people can work with my personality, I think I’m easy to talk to, and easy to work with. And as I get more and more professional so does my ability to build and main-tain relationships.

People call me for those three areas; you know that’s the model of my life. I believe that’s why I am where I’m at today. God’s plan for my life, De-veloping that talent, and relation-ships with the people I’m connected to. I try my best to treat people right and word has gotten around that I’m dependable, on time, and just cool to hang with.

NVi: You know I’ve been around a few very successful individuals and I’ve notice the key areas that they stress in order to continue their suc-cess. And you just hit each area.

1) Calling - Each person under-stands what they are called to do. This enables them to be able to properly filter their decisions, and not waste valuable time.2) Craft - They develop themselves in order to sustain where they are called to. 3) Connection - A Great man of God once said. “Everyone wants a G5 jet, but why do you need it if there is no one expecting you to show up.” Develop your calling until it creates a demand for you.

NVi: When did you decide that you wanted to be a touring musician?

Buddy: Well, I made that decision a long time ago, I had dreams about it. I think I wanted to tour and re-cord ever since I heard you could do that. “Lol” It didn’t happen the way I planned. I thought I was just go-ing to play to John P kee, Yolanda Adams, and James Hall. But secular gigs opened up first, and then when the word got out those doors be-came open.

NVi: As a profession there are cer-tain qualities that you posses that other musicians may not, what tips would you give an aspiring musi-cian?

Buddy: I’m a firm believer that music is like food. What you eat is what comes out of you. And what comes out of you is a part of you ability to perform. If you eat great wholesome foods you’ll be health and have a lot of energy. If you eat fast greasy foods you’ll be heavy and it’ll have you wanting to lay down all the time. I think who you listen

If we really want to treat ourselves, we’ll travel really far away and do the same thing. “Watch a movie, and go out to eat!”

Page 63: NEWVISION Magazine - The Aplha Issue

to, and who you’re studying is where I start at. The guys I listen to are Herbie Hancock, Billy Preston, and Chick Corea to name a few. I’ll sit down and study them, and I’ve found over the years to practice, practice, and more practice. It’s to the point where it’s a part of your lifestyle. It’s not like the “7-8 hours in a day and I’ll chill for a little while!” It becomes apart of what you do every day. There’s not a single day that goes by where I not practicing something in music.

NVi: What kind of Men in your life have in-spired you, and helped you develop as a Man of God, and as a musician.

Buddy: My Father first of all, Valdez Brant-ley has credit for a whole lot of musicians. And a lot of my music inspiration too. Israel Houghton and Aaron Lindsey. Those two guys have lived a lifestyle of Man of God first, and a musician second. And they are great examples. A lot of my understanding of being a Man of God first comes from them.

NVi: Being in the spotlight has got to be dif-ficult at times, what do you and your wife do to help relax?

Buddy: My wife and I are major movie lov-ers, and we love fine dining. “Fine dinning on a regular” And if we really want to treat our-selves, we’ll travel really far away like Japan and do the same thing. “Watch a movie, and go out to eat.” We found this new restaurant called Persian Steak in Scottsdale. They got this dish called Lobster Pot Pie, You gotta try it. It hit me $85 but it is delicious. Fine Din-ing at its best!

NVi: Well Mr. Strong we thank you for your time and will be in agreement with you as you continue on in what God has called you to do.
