    STELLA TELLER

Dear Parents and Friends of Stella Maris,

Did you ever stop to think about the fact that all

material things are diminished by sharing. Forexample, the more people there are to share a loafof bread the less there is for each person. On theother hand, knowledge is actually increased bysharing. Teachers and parents multiply knowledgewhen they share it with children. One piece ofknowledge that the world could well do to share isknowledge about the Christian virtue of gentleness.

Han Suyin, the renowned Chinese writer, tells usthat, There is nothing stronger in the world thangentleness. This is because gentleness is true

strength. It is treating other people with care, respect and consideration; it is being sensitive. TheBook of Proverbs tells us, A gentle tongue is a treeof life. It promotes life in other people, because itdoes not hurt or pass judgement or put-down, butoffers compassion and understanding.

A quick look around our society will reveal peoplepublicly yabbering loudly on mobiles, an unhealthylevel of abusive and foul language, increasinglevels of road rage and a frightening level ofdomestic violence. The antidote for these

behaviours is gentleness for it brings calmness, quietness and humility. However, no-one is humbleanymore; in fact, people are falsely told that to behumble means that they dont have self-esteem.Absolute rubbish! Being humble means that youdont force your presence upon others but that youdo respect the presence of others and act in amanner that is refined, kindly and expressive ofgood manners.

George Washington had a number of self rules, the first of which stated that, Every action done incompany ought to be done with some sign ofrespect to those who are present. The choice totreat ourselves and others with respect is in ourhands and it is through our hands, our actions andthe manner of our speaking, that we express thevirtue of gentleness. St Paul in his letters to thepeople of Philipi encourages those people to, Letyour gentleness be known to everyone.

Margot Prior, Professor of Psychology atMelbourne University, has pointed out that when itcomes to manners and respect for others, childrencant just be told: Parents have to be like thatthemselves. Manners are learned by watching whatthe parent does. If the behaviour isnt passed on

through parent modelling, it becomes so muchharder for the child as the child grows older.Children need boundaries and they sometimes needto be told what behaviour is okay.

Once again it is St Paul in his letters to theChristian community in Philipi, who reminds us to,Show a gentle attitude towards everyone. If weare gentle, we reveal the strength of our characterprecisely in our ability to remain calm andunruffled in very trying situations. When othersobserve such self-control, they admire ourcharacter; they trust us, they confide in us and areopen to our suggestions. Gentle people have greatinfluence, precisely, because they are gentleandkind and gracious.

While gentleness may not be in vogue, in todaysworld it is certainly due for a return. Perhaps, whoever said, Today I will walk on the gentle sideof the street, has put up a choice that is well worthconsidering.

Thought for the WeekTeaching your children how to pray can be adaunting task. The best place to start is withcommon prayers for children that can be easilymemorized. TheGrace Before Mealsand theGuardian Angel Prayerare prayers that even veryyoung children can learn by repeating them daily.

Instilling a sense of gratitude in our children can beespecially hard in a world where many of us havean overabundance of goods. Grace Before Meals isa good way to remind them (and ourselves!) thateverything we have comes ultimately from God.

    Grace Before Meals

"Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which weare about to receive, through Christ our Lord.

    Amen."

    The Guardian Angel Prayer

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom His loveentrusts me here, ever this day [night] be at my sideto light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
