If you didn’t get a chance to attend the new Workplace Violence (WPV)Taskforce, you can still attend at the 2

nd quarter meeting in Killeen. The meeting

had a great turn out showing that WPV is a major crisis in healthcare today. Please make time to attend this important taskforce as we work to be a solution in reducing violence against healthcare providers. Reducing violence in the workplace is one of my passions. Early in my career, I was abducted from my ER by a very angry patient. He dragged me to the ambulance bay by my hair and scrubs while hitting me. I had no idea why he did this as I wasn’t his nurse and had never spoken to him. I just happened to be standing there when he walked by. At that time security was standing by and stated they couldn’t touch patients. A co-worker managed to free me and my team took down the patient. During those days I had no recourse. Over the years, just as many of my peers have experienced, the violence continued. Although times have changed and legislation has changed, we are not finished fighting for the right to work in a safe environment. The Raise Your Hand Campaign is a great source of infor-mation on this topic. You can read more about the Raise Your Hand awareness campaign on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoRaiseYourHand/. Even if you have not been active in ENA in the past, there is no time like the present. It’s time to change the future of Emergency Nursing.

Texas ENA members we are pleased to announce that Representative Stephanie Klick (District 91) this past week has filed HB 1869. This bill would allow for two nurses to be appointed to seats on the Governor’s EMS & Trauma Advisory Council. Currently there is no dedicated position for a nurse on this council. Nurses may be appointed for other seats but there is no guarantee that a nurse would be appointed. This will guaran-tee an emergency room registered nurse appointed by Texas ENA and a registered nurse with trauma expertise would have designated seats on the council. Currently most committees that report up through this council have nurs-es appointed by the chair of the GETAC council. These nurses on the committees work tirelessly to help lead projects and recommendations for the council. By designating seats for expert emergency and trauma nurs-es we feel that this bill would allow for better communication for prehospi-tal and intra-hospital care, improve relationships amongst nurses, physi-cians & emergency medical technicians, and ultimately improve patient outcomes for all patients in Texas. Texas ENA would like to thank Representative Klick for supporting the voices of emergency nurses in Texas. Please contact your representative to let them know you are in favor of this bill. https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home Link to copy of bill filed: https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/86R/billtext/pdf/HB01869I.pdf#navpanes=0 Cassie Campbell, MSN, RN, CPEN Government Affairs Chair Texas Emergency Nurses Association

This year the San Antonio ENA has a few 1st timers in office, me included. With

the mentoring and support of the more experienced officers and members I look

forward to a productive year with many new ideas and changes coming about.

My primary goals as President are to increase attendance at our monthly meet-

ings hopefully seeing a number of new faces and to promote more member en-

gagement in community services.

One of our upcoming community projects will be helping the Safety Why’s group

at the ‘Corynval’ in Helotes, for the 2nd

year, selling strawberry short cakes. I’m

am also Co-Chair along with my Austin partner De Anna Gillespie helping organ-

ize this year’s TxENA’s Community Service Day at our National Conference.

(more information to come).

The chapter is extremely proud of two of our members who were published in the JEN this month. Michael Moon authored “Triangulation: A Method to In-

crease Validity, Reliability, and Legitimation in Clinical Re-search”. Monique Je-sionowski co- authored “Does a Provider in Tri-age and Rapid Medical Evalua-tion Help With Left Without Be-ing Seen Rates and ED Crowd-ing?”.

A very active chapter, San Antonio is working especially hard to provide educa-

tional opportunities to the members of the chapter as well as nurses in the sur-

rounding areas and Texas. We have already hosted two TNCC courses this

year with three

more classes

scheduled.

There are four

ENPC classes

planned for the

year as well as

several ‘Safety

Why’s’ baby sitter

courses for chil-

dren ages 11-17.

https://

www.sanantonioena.org/education In addition, several of our members teach

‘Falls Safety’ classes and ‘Stop the Bleed’ courses.

Lastly, I would like to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to our San Antonio Chapter Con-

ference Committee currently in the process of organizing our 7th annual confer-

ence ‘Concepts in Emergency and Critical Care 2019’. This one day conference

is scheduled for May 9th at the NOAH Event Venue in San Antonio. https://

www.sanantonioena.org/2019-conference. We would love to see you there!

. I have outlined the steps as we know them now. There will be

8 online pre-course modules instead of the 5 in the 7th edition. Classroom

time will be 12 hours versus 16 . There is an additional 2 hour time bock

for the online testing. Some of the biggest differences, all students will

have to register on the national ENA website to receive the link to the pre-

course modules.

These modules

must be done prior

to the first day of

class, or they will

not be allowed to

attend the class.

There will be less

lectures in the 8th

edition and more

classroom interac-

tion. After the stu-

dents are checked off on the TNP station (they will have two opportunities

to pass it) they will receive an email with a link to the online test. They will

then have 7 days to complete the test, this includes the second attempt if

they need it. There is no going in and out of the test, once they begin it,

they must complete it. That being said, they really need to set aside 2

hours to complete the test. If they do not get the test completed within the

7 days, it will fail them. Once they pass the test, they will print their CE

certificate and TNCC card from the ENA website. The really good thing

about the 8th edition, is it will be paperless for the Course Director. The

last date that a 7th

edition TNCC course can be held is June 30, 2019.
