The celebrations have begun! To commemorate 40 years of saving andprotecting species, we began a 40 day animal countdown on July 7 that willcontinue until our anniversary on August 15. These 40 days will include uniqueanimal enrichments, animal encounters, special feedings, keeper talks and
promotions. Also, be sure to join us on our anniversary weekend from August 15 – 17 where there will bespecial activities and events takingplace. As we celebrate our 40thanniversary, this year is certainlyturning out to be a big one at theToronto Zoo. Not only have wewelcomed many new animals withrecent births, we are also very proudto be part of a Canadian first with theartificial insemination of our femalegiant panda.Er Shun started showing signs of
going into estrus leading up to theweekend of April 26, 2014. On Sunday April 27, a giant panda expert from theChengdu Research Base of Giant PandaBreeding in China and Toronto Zoo staff fromthe Conservation, Education & Wildlifedepartment artificially inseminated Er Shun. Asgiant pandas are critically endangered, theToronto Zoo is very proud to be participatingand partnering in a giant panda conservationbreeding program.Giant pandas have what is called delayed
implantation and the gestation period isanywhere from 87 to 186 days from the date ofinsemination. As a result, Toronto Zoo staff willnot know if Er Shun is pregnant untilapproximately 20 days before she would give birth. The success rate ofartificial insemination is 60 percent, so we remain optimistic that our giantpanda family could grow. Stay tuned at torontozoo.com andFacebook.com/TheTorontoZoo for updates.
