*****************************************************************************************

Monday, April 23, 2018 - 6:30 PM at the Textile Center:

SD8 is a surface design group composed of eight Twin Cities-based artists. The presentation they will share at the March meeting is one originally given at the August, 2017 Surface Design Association Conference in Portland. MCQ

members will learn how SD8 managed three important conditions for a success-ful artist group: how to work through a start-up phase, how to navigate the in-terpersonal side of team dynamics and how to pursue and accomplish goals.

SD8 has shown their work at three venues in the metro area and is preparing a new exhibition for 2018. The group was formed in 2013. MCQ members Ann Ribbens and Kristin Hoelscher-Schacker also belong to SD8.

At the end of this presentation, there will be time for Q&A and each of the SD8 artists will share samples of her work.

The Power of Eight: Marking the Way of a Successful Artist Group

Carolyn Abbott, a fiber artist from Brainerd, Minnesota, will demonstrate the technique of paper lamination and share examples of work using this method. Paper lamination is a way of fastening a thin layer of paper to fabric. If the paper has an image on it next to the fabric, the image will transfer to the fabric. A laminated sheer cloth can also be used as a stencil. Carolyn will be showing finished work that used the technique as well as demonstrating the process of making a lamination on sheer fabric. Carolyn graduated from Iowa State University in 1967, with a degree in Applied Art Edu-cation with an emphasis on fine crafts. In 1979 her interests expanded to include quilting. She has studied hand dyeing and surface design with Jan Myers-Newbury, Nan-cy Halpern, Laura Murray, Claire Benn, Leslie Morgan and Kerr Grabowski, and has stud-ied design with art quilters Michael James and Nancy Crow. Carolyn’s studio is in Brainerd, Minnesota. Carolyn’s designs have been published in “Better Homes and Gardens”, “American Quilter” and "Quilting Arts" magazines and the recently published book, Crea-tive Quilting, The Journal Quilt Project Book, a book about the journal quilts that have hung at the International Quilt Festivals in Houston and Chicago. Her quilts have hung in the Fine Arts Building at the Minnesota State Fair, “Tactile Architecture” in Washington, D.C., "Form Not Function" in New Albany, Indiana, and a number of regional exhibits. Carolyn taught quilting and dyeing in the Brainerd area for many years. She is the owner of Flying Colors Fabric and Design, through which she sells her fine art quilts.

FROM THE MCQ CHAIR: MIMIE POLLARD

Wasn’t that some blizzard on January 22nd? I’m glad we all stayed safe but we also missed a lot. January is a good time to get reacquaint-ed with long-time friends after the holidays. We missed hearing Marilyn Fore-man, the planned speaker for January. She will be re-scheduled as soon as possi-ble. Carol Mashuga, Pro-gram Chair is coordinating that and will keep us updat-ed. We also missed Rose Al-len’s review of the Minnesota Quilt Show in June.

Our new Show and Tell for-mat was introduced at the February meeting. Smaller pieces were displayed on the design wall for everyone to admire during the meeting. Larger pieces or bed quilts were displayed on the tables provided. We have so many talented people and I feel that our quick show and tell doesn’t do justice to the artist or the piece. We’ll experiment with this format for a few meetings and see how it works for us.

The huge Textile Center Garage Sale is the evening of Friday, April 13th (preview sale) and Saturday, April 14th. Donations will be collected April 12th and April 13th. Now is the time to start thinking about “The Studio Spring Cleaning”. The TC will accept books, magazines, fabrics, craft tools, sewing machines, yarn, & anything that is related to textiles. Please donate those items that no longer inspire you, so that they may inspire others.

The next MCQ Retreat will be April 13-16th at Camp Wapo in Amery, WI. This is a great way to make new friends and to finish off those projects that we just can’t finish at home. More details will be provided on-line and at our monthly meetings.

Let our passion continue to inspire,

Mimie

MCQ CHALLENGE FOR 2018-19

I hope you’re working on your challenge quilt for the 2018-19 season. Our theme is: Inspired by….. [Artist of your choice.] Quilts will be due in May, 2018. Wow! This opens up a lot of possibilities. Is there an artist who inspires you on your artistic journey? To try new techniques? To work with new materials? Or simply create? Let your imagination run wild with this year’s theme. Regis-tration forms and additional guidelines are listed on the MCQ website — http://mncontemporary quilters.net/membership/challenge — and available at the MCQ meetings.

Our Two Bit Bag program will be supporting a $175 scholarship for the Summer Youth Art Quilt Camp at the Textile Center.

Each summer the Textile Center offers one-week summer textile camps for youth. One of the summer youth programs in 2018 will be a one-week camp on art quilts. The students will learn about design and how to use a sewing ma-chine. They will each make 2 art quilts. Tuition is $175/student. Many stu-dents and their parents are unable to pay tuition. MCQ will donate 50% of the 2BB donations (up to $175) between February and May to fund one scholar-ship.

We will have a box at our table through May for any additional cash you want to donate. We’ll also have envelopes for any checks people would like to send to the Textile Center for scholarships.

We need young quilters to continue our art and craft after we are gone (or too frail to quilt). This is our opportunity to help make that happen.

Private Tour of Historic Quilts and Textile Art Minnesota: Wednesday, May 9, 2018, 10:00 am Spend a morning with fellow Minnesota Contemporary Quilters as we view nine Minnesota historic quilts that are usually kept locked in storage, but will be out for us to see close up! Learn about the history, construction and significance of each quilt. Also included in the tour will be a selection of art quilts and other small contemporary textile art from the permanent collections of the Minnesota History Center, including a Kiwi Necklace, a Neibling doily, and a feed sack quilt. After the 1½ hour tour, explore the History Center on your own or have lunch in the café onsite with friends.

Tickets are $12 for the tour and must be purchased in advance. Payment must be made no later than our April meeting, April 23. Register now to reserve your ticket. Special needs can be accommodated, but tell Nancy Eha as soon as possible so she can work with the History Center regarding your needs. See http://mncontemporaryquilters.net/events/special-events/ for registration form and additional information. Nancy always welcomes and depends on your ideas. She needs to hear from you at least 3 months in advance of the date of your idea or event to publicize the event and register attendees. Email your ideas to Nancy Eha at [email protected].

Textile Center and Women Chefs & Restaurateurs present a collaborative exhibition: Artists in the Kitchen

50 works of art by women artists inspired by 50 women chefs & restaurateurs March 21 – May 19, 2018 Public Reception: Thursday, March 29, 5:30 – 7 pm Being on a team for Artists in the Kitchen is to begin to understand how an artist actually works, to be part of that process. I’m be-ginning to think of it as walking into a room you’ve never been in before, yet it’s totally familiar in so many ways and not in oth-ers. That’s because it’s partially about your own work and then discovering the visions and processes of the other person there, the artist.” —Lynne Rossetto Kasper Beginning December 27, 2017, 50 all-women artist/chef-restaurateur teams met to join forces in an innovative partnership where-by chefs are inspiring the artists to produce new artworks, culminating in the exhibition. ]To honor the mission of Textile Center, each of the artists is incorporating a textile process, material, or sensibility in their completed work. Recognizing the abundance of local culinary and visual art talent of Twin Cities-area women, “this invitational exhibition forges a new partnership that celebrates the work of women artists in both the art studio and culinary worlds.”— Artists in the Kitchen Organizers. Artists in the Kitchen premieres in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of Women Chefs & Restaurateurs (WCR) national confer-ence, Women Speak: Curating the Future of Food from April 21-23.
