Make me Holy1

Dear Brothers

As children of Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini, we celebrated on May 30th, 150 years of his priestly consecration and on June 1st, 108 years that ended his pilgrimage in this world and entered into heavenly glory.

These dates are the reason and timely occasion to strengthen our ideal of consecration, to enhance our personal and community prayer, to ask the Holy Trinity through the intercession of Blessed Scalabrini for a miracle that may obtain his canonization, so that the world can recognize the virtues and the vision of this great man, Father of Migrants and Apostle of the Catechism.

Fr. Fernando Cuevas, cs, Vice-postulator of the region of St. John Baptist and St. Charles Provinces, has started to produce material of devotion: prayers, novenas etc., and has invited us to individually strengthen the daily devotion through the intercession of Blessed Scalabrini, then motivate missionary and formation communities... the different groups whose patronage and intercession we draw upon.

I want to share with you, brothers of the province, a little bit about the Holiness in our founder. His call to faith meant first vocation to personal Holiness and then community Holiness. Practical as always, Blessed Scalabrini proposed on Holiness, very simple and clear concepts and everything always under the visible model of the imitation of Christ.

“Holy is the one who firmly believes all the truths of the faith; who in God puts all his hope; who

loves Him above all else.” Holiness “consists in observing the commandments of God and the Church,

in compliance with faithfully the duties of one self’s being.” “What the most illustrious saints, or

rather, the Saints that the Church recognizes, were not the extraordinary gifts..., it was the fidelity,

the vigilance, the accuracy, which constantly fulfilled the duties of their being, and met them mindful

of God. That is the true, essential character of Holiness.”

Scalabrini would say in order to reach Holiness three things take place: ardent desire, that is, true hunger and thirst for perfection; the perfect fulfillment of the duties of one’s vocation; and the effort to imitate Christ every day. “To define myself I must always remember it is necessary to be blameless, modest, firm, sweet, strong, big and noble in all things.”

In search of Holiness we found:

a) The Imitation of Christ Crucified: God educates with the tribulations, with humiliation, with hardships, with the nuisances of the Ministry, from there we should consider the tribulations, the humiliations, the downs as precious means of sanctification. ”Don't complain, not grieve me, and not discourage me: offer it all in union with the sufferings of Jesus Christ". Fac me cruce inebriare!...

b) Practice of asceticism: In search of the purification of the spirit through the denial

of material pleasures, Scalabrini said that: "what for others is nothing, for me it is fatal". We see it constantly practiced in his life itself "the promptness in distancing from all unclean

thoughts... I prostrate before God, cry my misery and confess... never allow words that could

offend the virtue, nor stand others to say them in his presence”.

c) A Man of Faith: the essential thing in the life of a man is the nature of his personal relationship with God. The existence of Scalabrini cannot be understood and explained without the conception of his being a man entirely of God and a man of faith. The supernatural was the life of his life. He acted continuously guided by the most high. He searched for God in the achievements of the study, in the apostolic work, conversations with the elderly and youth... "There is nothing more natural than

supernatural". He was a man who lived the faith and sought to communicate it to the

souls. Having been forced by the choice of half an hour of meditation a day, faithful to the Divine Office, the Rosary and other piety practices of piety he would say: "who does not pray, has no soul: or do not understand, or feel, or does not love." Prayer is the bond of

humanity".

d) Christian Vision of history: Scalabrini was so absorbed by the Christian experience that saw everything in its light; even in history and in progress, the victories and the human flaws, the sufferings and the triumphs of the Church. He wouldn’t consider anything accidental, because on all the events dominating, as sole protagonist, is Divine Providence. . . . """"While the world is stirred under the weight of their progress, while the man is exalted by his conquests in the matter and governs as pattern to

nature... While people fall, resurgence and renewed, and races mingle, extend, confused;" "through

the rumor of our machines much beyond this feverish work... they start maturing here on earth, a

wider, more sublime time: union with God of all men of good will".

e) All for God and the good of souls, despite their continuous occupations and fatigues, his thoughts always made him feel more in need for the union with God. In his diary he noted: "the tree born from the earth finds its nourishment in the earth; "the soul that has the origin in heaven, finds their food, only in what comes from heaven".

During his trips to America, Scalabrini’s thoughts were concentrated on the glory of God and the salvation of souls: “I am here for Him, and for Him I shall carry out the program He has inspired in me even if it should demand the sacrifice of my life. Despite the discomfort of

these interminable voyages and exertions of every sort, my health has always been excellent and I

trust that God, for whom I have come, will keep me so. I feel very well, working for heaven and

for the souls”.

In conclusion, our Blessed Founder invites us constantly to holiness showing by example the way to achieve it. May Blessed Scalabrini intercede with God so that we his children may continue to be witnesses of God in the world of migrants and refugees.

Estimados hermanos,

Como hijos del Beato Juan Bautista Scalabrini, celebramos el día 30 de mayo, 150 años de su consagración sacerdotal y el día, 1 de junio 108 años de que finalizó su peregrinación en este mundo y entró en la Gloria celestial.

Estas fechas son motivo y ocasión oportuna para fortalecer nuestro ideal de consagración, para intensificar nuestra oración personal y comunitaria, para pedir a la Santísima Trinidad a través de la intercesión del Beato Scalabrini un milagro que obtenga su canonización, de tal forma que el mundo entero pueda reconocer las virtudes y la visión de este gran hombre, Padre de los Migrantes y Apóstol del Catecismo.

El P. Fernando Cuevas, cs, vice-postulador de la región de las provincias de San Carlos y San Juan Bautista, ha iniciado a elaborar material de devoción: oraciones, novenas etc., y ha invitado para que primero a nivel individual fortalezcamos la devoción diaria bajo la intercesión del Beato Scalabrini, después motivemos a las comunidades de misión, de formación… a los diversos grupos que servimos a recurrir a su patrocinio e intercesión.

Deseo reflexionar con Ustedes, hermanos de la provincia, un poco acerca de la Santidad en nuestro fundador. Para el cual, la llamada a la fe, significaba en primer lugar vocación a la santidad personal y luego santidad comunitaria. Todo siempre bajo el modelo visible de imitación que es Cristo. Práctico como siempre, el beato Scalabrini proponía sobre la santidad, conceptos muy simples y claros:

“Santo es aquél que cree firmemente todas las verdades de la fe; quien en Dios pone toda su esperanza;

quien lo ama sobre todas las cosas”. La santidad “consiste en observar los mandamientos de Dios y de

la Iglesia, en el cumplimiento fielmente de los deberes del propio estado”. “Lo que hizo los santos más

ilustres, o más bien, a los Santos que reconoce la Iglesia, no fueron los dones extraordinarios…,fue

aquella fidelidad, aquella vigilancia, aquella exactitud, con las que cumplieron constantemente los

deberes de su estado, y los cumplieron teniendo presente a Dios. Es ese el verdadero, el esencial carácter

de la santidad”.

Scalabrini decía que para alcanzar la santidad, ocurren tres medios: deseo ardiente, esto es, verdadera hambre y sed de perfección; perfecto cumplimiento de las obras y

de la vocación; esfuerzo en imitar a Cristo todos los días. ““““Para divinizarme debo recordarme siempre que es necesario ser irreprensible, modesto, firme, dulce, fuerte, grande y noble en todas las

cosas”.

En su búsqueda de santidad encontramos:

a) La Imitación de Cristo Crucificado: “Dios educa con las tribulaciones, con las humillaciones, con las penas, con los fastidios del ministerio,… de ahí que debemos “considerar las

tribulaciones, las humillaciones, los desprecios como medios preciosos de santificación. No quejarme, no

entristecerme, no desanimarme: ofrecerlo todo en unión a las penas de Jesucristo”. Fac me cruce

inebriari!..

b) La práctica del ascetismo: como búsqueda de la purificación del espíritu por medio de la negación de los placeres materiales, Scalabrini decía: “Lo que para los otros no es nada, para mi es fatal”. Lo vemos constantemente practicado en su vida misma “La prontitud en alejarse de todo pensamiento inmundo… Postrarme ante Dios, llorar mi miseria y confesarme… no

permitía nunca palabras que pudieran ofender la virtud, ni soportaba que otros las dijeran en su

presencia.

c) Hombre de Fe: Lo esencial en la vida de un hombre decía, es la naturaleza de sus relaciones personales con Dios. La existencia de Scalabrini no puede ser entendida y explicada sin la concepción de ser un hombre totalmente de Dios y un hombre de fe. Lo sobrenatural era la vida de su vida. Actuaba continuamente guiado por el Altísimo. Buscó a Dios en los logros del estudio, en las labores apostólicas, en las conversaciones con los grandes y pequeños… “Nada hay más natural, que lo sobrenatural”. Era un hombre que vivía de la fe y buscaba comunicarla a las almas. Habiéndose obligado con el voto de media hora de meditación al día, fiel al divino Oficio, al Rosario y otras prácticas de piedad decía: “Quién no ora, no tiene alma: O no entiende, o no siente, o no ama. La oración es el vínculo de la entera humanidad”.

d) Visión Cristiana de la Historia: Scalabrini estaba tan absorbido por la experiencia cristiana que veía en todo, su luz; hasta en la historia y en el progreso, las victorias y las caídas humanas, los sufrimientos y los triunfos de la Iglesia. Nada consideraba fortuito, porque sobre todos los eventos veía dominar, como única gran protagonista, a la Providencia Divina. “Mientras el mundo se agita bajo el peso de su progreso, mientras el hombre se exalta por sus conquistas en la materia y gobierna como patrón a la naturaleza…mientras los

pueblos caen, resurgen y se renuevan, y las razas se mezclan, se extienden, se confunden; a través del

rumor de nuestras máquinas mucha más allá de este trabajo febril…se va madurando aquí en la tierra,

una época más vasta, más sublime: la unión con Dios de todos los hombres de buena voluntad”.

e) Todo Por Dios y por las almas, A pesar de sus continuas ocupaciones y fatigas, los pensamientos le hacían sentir siempre más viva la necesidad de la unión con Dios.

En su diario anotaba: “El árbol nacido de la tierra encuentra en la tierra su alimento; el alma que tiene el origen en el cielo, no puede encontrar su alimento, más que en aquello que le es dado del Cielo”.

Durante los viajes en América, el pensamiento del Obispo estaba dirigido a la gloria de Dios y a la salvación de las almas: “Estoy aquí por El, y por El cumpliré el programa que ha inspirado, aunque sea necesario hasta el sacrificio de la vida. Mi salud, a pesar de las incomodidades de

los interminables viajes y de los cansancios de todo género, fue siempre óptima, y espero que Dios, por

quien he venido, me la conserve… me siento bien trabajando por el cielo y por las almas, trabajemos

sólo por Dios, con Dios y a la salvación de las almas…salvemos a las almas, y todo los demás quede sin

importancia”.

En conclusión, nuestro Beato fundador nos invita constantemente a la santidad mostrándonos con el ejemplo las vías para alcanzarlo. Que él, como Padre nuestro, interceda ante Dios para que sigamos siendo buenos hijos y testigos de Dios en el mundo de los migrantes y refugiados.

ORDINATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD

Deacon Rosemond Sylvestre, cs, from Haiti, is concluding his studies at SIMI in Rome, Italy and will be ordained to the priesthood on July 21, 2013 at the Chapelle Saint Louis de Gonzague, Port au Prince, Haiti. In February 2014 Deacon Rosemont will be assigned to one of our missions in the province.

Deacon Juventino Hermilo Cortes Solis, cs, from Mexico, is concluding his studies at SIMI in Rome, Italy and will be ordained to the priesthood on September 13, 2013 in Palenque, Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico. Hermilo is assigned to St. Joseph Province in Argentina.

NEW POSTULANT GROUP A group of 5 young students coming from Mexico and Colombia will begin the Postulant Program on July 16th 2013 in Mexico City, under the orientation of Fr. Antonio Muraro, cs. We welcome them to our Province and wish them the best in this new phase of formation which will be held at Casa Del Migrante in Tijuana. Con la orientación del P. FR. DAN LAPOLLA, CS

Dear Confreres,

Please accept my gratitude for your prayers and concerns during my recent illness. As you probably know, last November, I had fallen down the stairs, spent three months in hospital recovering from the fall, and therapy; but while I was in hospital, I acquired urosepsis or urinary infection, requiring further treatment. I had lost about 80 lbs. And now weigh about 126 k. One of the doctors, just to check further, sent me for an MRI and they discovered an infection in my spine requiring CT guided biopsy and six weeks of daily intravenous antibiotics. I am now at the end of that period and will be doing some further therapy.

It’s been a long road indeed! It started last June when we were celebrating the 100th anniversary of the parish. At the time, I heard that the Scalabrinians will be leaving the Diocese in which I worked since 1997. This had a tremendous psychological and eventually physical effect on me, my diabetes etc. and as Nov. 2012 approached my health had taken a turn for the worse beginning with the fall I had taken. IV INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON MIGRATION AND PEACE

The Forum is organized by the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) in collaboration with the Office of Immigrant Affairs of the Mayor's Office of New York City and

the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations. The IV Forum will focus on the theme Human Security, Human Development and Global Governance on Migration: The Commitment of Governments and Civil Society Organizations at Local, National and International Levels. The event will be held in New York City on June 20 and 21, 2013 at the New York Law School. SIMN is an organization linking 270 institutions established in over 30 countries on five continents, with a mission to safeguard and promote the dignity and the rights of migrants, refugees, seafarers, itinerants, and people on the move. Participants of the Forum include Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, United Nation Agencies, representatives of International Organizations, Heads of State and other political representatives, members of civil society, organizations working with migration issues as well as those representing migrant people. NUEVO LAREDO VISIT

La Casa del Migrante Nazareth de Nuevo Laredo ha recibido 3 850 migrantes en este primer semestre del año 2013. 40% son deportados y 60% son migrantes. De estos migrantes el 45% son provenientes de Honduras. Con el apoyo del gobierno del estado de Tamaulipas, se llevara a cabo durante este año la construcción del proyecto de la casa de los voluntarios en anexo a la actual Casa del Migrante. Actualmente la casa está bajo la coordinación del Padre Jesús Reyes, cs, el cual cuenta con la colaboración de 3 voluntarios de origen Guatemalteco, Colombiano e Italiano.

JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF FR. NICK MARRO, CS On April 28, 2013, Fr. Nick Marro, cs celebrated his Anniversary Mass with the presence of Bishop Lawrence Sabatini, cs and the Provincial Superior marking his 50th Jubilee of Ordination to the Priesthood. ENCUENTRO SECRETARIADO DE VIDA RELIGIOSA

Los Angeles, 4-5 junio, 2013

El Secretariado de vida religiosa nos reunimos en nuestro siempre hospitalario seminario del Sun Valley, los Ángeles, para evaluar, proponer y organizar la vida religiosa en nuestra comunidad provincial. Los religiosos participantes miembros del secretariado: Richard Zanotti, Marvin Ajic, Fernando Cuevas y Francisco Pellizzari, hemos estudiado el documento capitular, analizado y sintetizado las respuestas y el trabajo que los grupos han hecho en la asamblea provincial, otros temas concernientes la vida religiosa. Hemos elaborado un breve cuestionario que será enviado a todos los cohermanos para ser contestado en los encuentros de las comunidades locales y para que los superiores locales presenten en el próximo encuentro en octubre. Este será enviado después de que los otros dos secretariados, formación y misión, aporten sus preguntas. Decidimos enviar a todos ustedes un comunicado resultado de una larga discusión y discernimiento que quiere indicar nuestro plan y nuestro compromiso: Recalcamos la importancia y la validez de la distribución de las comunidades religiosas por áreas, reconociendo algunas dificultades, entre otras, las largas distancias. Valoramos la riqueza de la dinámica participativa de la Vida Religiosa en nuestra provincia: Encuentros de Comunidad local, superiores locales, secretariados, consejo provincial asamblea, provincial y otros encuentros. Recomendamos la práctica de los encuentros de la comunidad local (tres veces al ano de dos o tres días) organizados adecuadamente: horario, oración, programación, temas, corrección fraterna, lectio divina. Exhortamos a que cada comunidad local prepare un proyecto misionero en consonancia con el plan provincial, que incluya las dimensiones de vida religiosa, pastoral, formación y animación vocacional, “vinos nuevos en odres nuevos”. Nos comprometemos a preparar y facilitar material de apoyo en los varios temas para reflexionar en las comunidades locales. Nos unimos a la iniciativa de la dirección provincial en la preparación de los encuentros de los superiores locales, colaborando con los otros secretariados de nuestra provincia.

RED – CASAS DEL MIGRANTE

The meeting of RED – Casas del Migrante took place June 3-5, 2013 in Tijuana, BC, Mexico attended by Fr. Pat Murphy, cs, Fr. Ademar Barilli, cs, Fr. Florenzo Rigoni, cs and Fr. Jesus Reyes, cs. They shared the current reality of the Casas del Migrante in Mexico and Guatemala, the recent migration flows and their hopes and concerns in their challenging ministry and the projects of St. John the Baptist Province.

NEW BISHOP IN MEXICO D.F.

Father Jorge Estrada Solórzano, Pastor of St. Peter Parish in Tlalpan, Mexico D.F., a few block from our seminary, will be consecrated Bishop at the Basilica of Guadalupe on July 19 at 11:00 am. He visited our formators and the seminarians of Seminario San Juan Bautista this past week. We thank him for his support during his stay as Pastor at St. Peter’s Parish where we, the Scalabrinians of the Seminary, share our ministry. Congratulations Bishop Jorge and we wish you the best in your new journey as Shepherd of the Church.

Fr. Leo Silvestri was born at Castel di Godego (Treviso) on 8th May 1930, the fourth of the eight children of Romano and Agnese Zordan. At the age of 12 he entered the Istituto Scalabrini of Bassano del Grappa (Vicenza). He made his first profession at Crespano del Grappa (Treviso), where he had done the novitiate. He made his perpetual profession at Rezzato (Brescia) on 5th October 1955. He was ordained a priest by the hands of Mons. Carlo Zinato, bishop of Vicenza, in the church of the Istituto Scalabrini of Bassano del Grappa on 17th March 1956.

Assigned to the Province of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, which at that time comprise only the Australian continent, he carried out his initial ministry for a short while in the parish of Carrington and then in the parish of Lawrence O’Tool, Broadmeadows, in the city of Newcastle (NSW). In 1962 he was vice-parish priest in the parish of Immaculate Conception, Unanderra (NSW) and the following year he was appointed parish priest of the parish of Silkwood, North Queensland. In 1964 and1965 he was vice-parish priest in the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary at Redcliffs (Vic). In 1966 he was asked to take care of the Italian community in the parish of St. Brigid’s, North Fitzroy (Vic), in view that the parish was to be entrusted to our Congregation. After it was entrusted to it (1968), he continued to exercise his ministry as vice-parish priest until the end of 1969. From 1970 to 1976 he was parish priest of Sacred Family’s parish, Lismore (NSW). He carried that responsibility for six years. In 1977 he was appointed parish priest of the parish of St. Francis de Sales, Haymarket (Sydney, NSW). From 1981 to 1984 he lived outside the Congregation. At the end of 1984 he was transferred to the Province of St. John the Baptist. He carried out his ministry in Canada, first as vice-parish priest in the parish of Our Lady of Grace, Calgary, AL. During this time there he had to undergo a heart operation, from which he recovered, but which undermined his, so far, strong constitution. Then, from 1994 to 1998, he was vice-parish priest of St. Angela Merici’s, Windsor, ON; and from 1998 to 199 vice-parish priest of St. Maria Goretti, Edmonton, AL. For health reasons, in 1999 decided to return Italy. After some in the community of Maria Assunta at Arco, he moved in St. Raphael’s Home, at Bassano del Grappa. There he diligently took care, as sacristan, of the chapel, while his health allowed him. He was also gradually losing his sight, until, at the end, he recognized people more by their voice than by their face. The Lord called him on the vigil of Christmas Day 2012. Fr. Leo was a humble and meek person. He never tried to stand out above others. He knew how to be close to people. Those who went through times of sorrow and difficulties found in him a priest who understood and comforted them.

P. Leo Silvestri nació en Castel di Godego (TV-Italia) el 8 de mayo de 1930; hijo de Romano y Zordan Agnese. Era el cuarto de ocho hijos. Entró en el Scalabrini de Bassano del Grappa a los doce años. Destinado a la Provincia de San Francisca Javier Cabrini, que en ese momento comprendía solamente el continente australiano, realizó su primer ministerio en la parroquia de Carrington y

despues en St. Lawrence O'Toole, Broadmeadow (Newcastle, NSW). En 1962 fue vicario en la parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción, Unanderra (NSW), y al año siguiente fue nombrado párroco de Silkwood, Queensland. Desde 1964 hasta 1965 fue asistente en la parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Redcliffs (Vic). En 1966 estuvo a cargo del cuidado pastoral de la comunidad italiana en la parroquia de Santa Brigida, North Fitzroy (Vic), también en perspectiva de que la parroquia fuera confiada a nuestra congregación. Después que la parroquia fue confiada a la Congregación (1968) siguió ejerciendo el ministerio como vice-párroco hasta el final de 1969. Desde 1970 hasta 1976 se le pidió el cuidado de la parroquia de la Sagrada Familia, al norte de Lismore, Nueva Gales del Sur, cargo que realizó durante 6 años. En 1977 fue nombrado párroco de San Francisco de Sales, Haymarket (Sydney), Nueva Gales del Sur. Desde 1981 hasta 1984 vivió fuera de la congregación. A finales de 1986 fue enviado a la Provincia de San Juan Bautista: aquí trabajó en Canadá, inicialmente como vice-párroco en la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Gracia, Calgary, AL. Durante estos años tuvo que someterse a una cirugía de corazón de la que se recuperó, pero que ósufísicofuerte.Desde1994hasta1998fuevicarioparroquialenlaparroquiadeSantaٕdebilit Ángela Merici, Windsor, ON, y desde 1998 hasta 1999 desarrolló el ministerio, siempre como vice párroco en la parroquia de Santa María Goretti, Edmonton, AL. En 1999 se retiró en Italia, primero en Arco y luego en Bassano del Grappa. En Bassano del Grappa aceptó de buena gana hacerse cargo de la Capilla, una tarea que llevó a cabo con mucha diligencia hasta que sus fuerzas se lo permitieron. Poco a poco su vista se volvió más y más débil, por lo que al final distinguía la gente más por la voz que por su rostro. El Señor lo llamó la noche de Navidad de 2012. P. Leo era una persona humilde y mansa, que nunca ha tratado de sobresalir entre los demás. Siempre ha desempeñado con diligencia los compromisos que se le asignaron. Sabía hacerse cercano a la gente. Los que pasaban por momentos de dolor y dificultades encontraron en él un sacerdote que sabía comprender y consolar.
