Carole Young

Dear Members

I t was my absolute honour and pleasure to visit your countries in March at the time of your AGMs. Thank you sincerely for the welcome and the friendship that was accorded to me.

I came home from that visit filled with humility and admiration of the work that is being undertaken by Members of Districts 330 and 331 in the name of Inner Wheel. I was privileged to speak with members about their Club projects (and in D331 to visit one project). I applaud you all for your on-going efforts to create Happier Futures.

The gathering in Kuala Lumpur for your District AGMs was a credit to the organising committee and I congratulate them on their planning and organisation. Events such as this take forethought and effort. It is this careful and thorough forward planning that makes the event feel as though it is progressing smoothly and effortlessly.

To those who have accepted office within your Clubs and Districts for 2013-2014, I thank you. I urge all members to support these ladies as they lead our organisation in your countries for the coming year.

I thank you all for continuing to “Be A Friend” and I thank you for giving me such wonderful memories of my visit to your area.

In friendship,

CaroleIIW President 2012-2013

A nHonourToServefrom District Chairman (D330) Juanita Lee

I t is a privilege to be part of this great organisation and an honour to have served as Chairman of District 330.

My appreciation of Inner Wheel has grown this past year with the opportunity to experience the good work carried out by Clubs in the District. By upholding the values of Inner Wheel with compassion, members have made a difference in the lives of others and their world a better place. Let us continue to focus and build a better future for children. I am indeed very proud of your efforts and contributions.

With better communication in exchanging of ideas and experiences, clubs in the District can collaborate in bigger projects, resulting in greater public awareness and raising the image of Inner Wheel. This has been advocated by IIW President Carole Young to members all over the world. The publicity will help us garner better support and will make it easier for us to raise funds.

During my term, I have had the valuable support of my District Executive Committee. I thank each and everyone of my dedicated officers. Together, we have achieved the following: •ActivatingandkeepingtheDistrict330websiteup-to-date.•CharteringoftwonewClubs,IWCIntanKualaLumpurandIWCMutiaraSelangor.•Organising a joint district social project involving nineteen Clubs from Districts

We were very honoured with the presence of IIW President Carole Young at the joint District AGM. Thank you also to President Chan Kam Fatt and Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja for their donation of skipping ropes.

District Committee, Presidents and members, our journey has been rewarding and fulfilling. Your wholehearted commitment to Inner Wheel has played an important role in making Inner Wheel the great organisation that it is today, one that we are all proud of. I thank you all.

A Year of Changesfrom District Chairman (District 331)

Rokiah Staun

I feel honoured to be given this opportunity to write a message as District 331 Chairman.

It is now a year since District 331 was formed, resulting from the division of District 330. There are many changes introduced to the new District such

as a new set of District Rules and Constitution, a new website, a new banner. However, there are also many customary practices which we want to perpetuate, one in particular is the access to news from all Clubs in Malaysia and Singapore. Hence, I am

glad that we have opted for this year’s edition of ‘Newslink’ to be a joint-publication of both Districts.

I would like to acknowledge the work of District 330 Editor Cheng YeokSanwhoischieflyresponsiblefordesigningthenewformatof‘Newslink’ in order to accommodate news from both Districts. This is not a simple task. I am confident that everyone will appreciate the many hours of effort and thought you have put into this year’s publication. To District 331 Editor Florence Enau, I wish to congratulate you for being able to coordinate the compilation of news from Clubs in District 331 and work with Yeok Santhousands of miles away, to get this magazine published. For a person who professes being IT illiterate, you have done a remarkable job.

Looking forward to reading this year’s ‘Newslink’.

Yours in Inner Wheel Friendship,

Rokiah StaunDistrict Chairman 2012-2013 (District 331)

I t gives me great pleasure to write some of my experiences serving District 330 and District331 as the National Representative for the year 2012-2013. Indeed, it has been

a wonderful journey of learning experience as I had the priviledge of direct communication between International Inner Wheel to pass on very important information to both the districts and clubs.

Deadlines set by International Inner Wheel has to be met, and therefore, communication between clubs was my priority.

IIW President Carole Young’s theme “Be A Friend” is a very simple theme which can encompass all that Inner Wheel stands for us, as we promote true friendship, encourage

the ideals of personal service and foster international understanding.

One of the greatest features of Inner Wheel is theopportunity given to members the world over, thus contributing to international understanding and friendship.

Best wishes to all.

from National Representative (District 330 & District 331)

5IIW Theme 2012-2013 “Be A Friend”

Inner Wheel to me is a sisterhood, a friendship group. As we get on in our years, girlfriends play an important

role in our lives. We all have our work, family and various other commitments. To be able to shut off, at least for a while, every now and then, in the company of ‘sisters’ is very welcome. Sometimes we can get carried away in our dayto day grind that we tend to forget to look on the brighter side or the funnier side of situations. Girlfriends remind you to do exactly that. To lend a shoulder to cry on or to laugh ourselves silly. Just like our new IIW theme, “We, for women”. Inner Wheel also serves as an avenue to do service to the underprivileged. What we cannot do alone, we can do as a group. What we accomplish will give us great satisfaction. I think Inner Wheel is very necessary in our lives.

In the transition from one district to two, District Chairman Rokiah Staun has shown hercompetence in heading the new District 331 and I am more than grateful that her experience

of being two times District Chairman, namely in 2011-2012 in District 330 and 2012-2013 in District 331, has helped in forming and developing District 331 smoothly and bringing it to full function without any hiccups.

As the second District Chairman of District 331, with the theme “We, for women”, I would like to quote the British poet Mathew Arnold, who once said, “If ever there comes a time when the women of the world come together purely and simply for the benefit of mankind, it will be a force such as the world has never known”. Since Inner Wheel Clubs are for women, how moremeaningful it is to work alongside friends for the benefit of mankind!

I would first like to thank all Clubs in Districts 330 and 331 for voting me as National Representative for 2013-2014. It will be my privilege to carry out my duties to advise,

communicate and connect, between International Inner Wheel and our Districts. IfirstjoinedtheInnerWheelClubofSingaporeEastmorethan30yearsago.Despitenumerousotherwork and social commitments, Inner Wheel continues to retain a special place in my heart because of its unique blend of service through friendship. Through the years, Inner Wheel has faced some challenges, the most significant of which was declining membership. With the fast-changing global socio-economic landscape, the need to steer the Organisationfromaperceived“coffeeclub”culturetoonethatmeetstheaspirationsanddesiresofahigher-educated and better-travelled female population, became evident. The recent landmark ruling to open our doors to all women was, therefore, inevitable and timely, immediately allowing Inner Wheel to gain strength not only in numbers but also in the quality and mix of diverse members. It is exciting times indeed for Inner Wheel, with visionary leaders at the helm and new clubs in formation, many with younger generation members. We can proudly count Districts 330 and 331 as a prime example. As we scale greater heights, however, our original and distinctive ideals of friendship, fellowship and international understanding must remain a constant and continue to be nurtured amongst old and new members alike. I urge members to be attuned to International Inner Wheel, to keep abreast of ongoing worldwide activities, to meet up and welcome visiting overseas members and to look beyond our own District shores, for a more wholesome and rewarding Inner Wheel experience. There are many platforms to be engaged on, even internationally, if any member so desires. For a start, I encourage members to take up office, especially the club Presidency, as the first step to “growing” in Inner Wheel. I have seen many members rise to the occasion, despite initial fears, developing in self-confidence and mastering untapped skills along the journey. Likewise, I wish to remind members to support, and work with, every elected President, and to cast aside personal opinions and prejudices for the general good of the club. Finally, it leaves me to say that I will perform my duties as National Representative to the best of my ability and with abject humility. I invite members to correspond with me on any issue that may need clarification, especially from International Inner Wheel, and I look forward to meeting old and new friends in the course of my work. I hope this short account may inspire more Inner Wheel members in our district to move through the ranks in their clubs, then the district and eventually become part of the

International Inner Wheel board.

My journey, which started out as an ordinary Inner Wheel member in 1996 to being elected to the International Inner Wheel Board member for 2013/2014 was not something I planned. It happened organically and came about as I began to immerse myself within the service and fellowship culture of Inner Wheel.

In retrospect, I believe my love and dedication to service and the Inner Wheel movement had taken root when I travelled to Australia in my teens to continue my education. My guardians in Australia wereaRotarianandanactiveInnerWheelmember.Shewasafostermothertomanyinternationalstudents and I got involved with International and community service projects during my stay.

My husband became a Rotarian in 1975 and the wives of Rotarians met monthly to have fellowship and help Rotarians in their projects. We even did our own projects and I guess this was the start of

my love for service through fellowship.

I joined the Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur in 1996 and served as the Club secretary for 2 years continuously. This position gave me the opportunity to

understand the ethos of Inner Wheel and to become familiar with its structure, constitution and rules.

During my tenure as the Club President and later as District Chairman, some of us realised that our movement will benefit if all Inner Wheel members in our district understood and knew how to use the existing rules to structure their clubs and activities. Thus a few of us spent many hours of our time coupled with great fellowship to come up with a manual of procedure for

club and district officers.

I have attended several Inner Wheel International conferences and was also the National Representative. The conferences and my tenure as the National Representative allowed me to appreciate Inner Wheel and I realised that I was becoming a better person intellectually and socially. I learnt the true meaning of giving within my means and realised that what I received in friendship and happiness far outweighed my sacrifice in time, effort and money.

Emily Dickson wrote ”Friends Are My Estate”, as my friends, many of whom are in Inner Wheel, are my greatest inheritance in this life.

exCerpt of speeCh by IIW presIdent Carole young, openIng Ceremony, 23 mar 2013

I am delighted to be here to be part of your District Meetings and I thank you for the invitation to attend and for the very warm welcome that I have received. It is wonderful to see familiar faces and to meet again with members that I have met

at other Conferences and Charters. I was very pleased to hear recently that two more Clubs have been chartered in District 330 – that is wonderful news and I congratulate all those involved in this extension work. There is a lot of talk within our organisation about new Clubs being Chartered, new Districts being formed and new members being welcomed. This is wonderful news; it is all positive and encouraging,

but I still believe that it is very important that we retain the members that we have, that the established Clubs and Districts remain healthy and active – this can only happen if we have people willing to take on leadership roles. I am often reminded that we are all volunteers and this is true but we also have a commitment to our Club and our organisation. I am finding as I travel that the Clubs and Districts which have high expectations and which require commitment and effort from their members are the Clubs and Districts that are thriving. InthecountrieswhereInnerWheelisthriving, itiscertainlyaserviceClub.Ourmembersinthose countries have “friendship with a real purpose”, not just “friendship with coffee”. These Clubs have a vision; they have specific and ambitious projects; there are expectations that the members will contribute time and energy; these Clubs and Districts make no apology for demanding dedication and effort from their members and these expectations are made very clear before the person is admitted to membership. This is what I mean when I say we have to make Inner Wheel relevant …if we become just a coffee group, we will have totally lost the Inner Wheel ethic and the ideals that Margarette Golding had in mind when she formed Inner Wheel in 1924 to enhance the work of Rotarian husbands, and wewillhavelostsightofthethreeObjectsofInnerWheel.Withoutthevisionandtheexpectationhow can there be achievement and satisfaction that we have indeed helped someone less fortunate than ourselves, or helped someone to upskill themselves so that they can support and feed their family members in the future. This is the sort of thing that Inner Wheel is about. This is what we are aiming for and this is why we need members to come forward and take office to keep our Clubs and our Districts healthy, to keep giving new enthusiasm to activities, to bring new ideas to our Clubs, to retain the members that we have, as well as to entice more ladies to join our wonderful worldwide organisation and help create Happier Futures. I hope you have all seen the new IIW website which was launched earlier this week. I hope you will find the site easy to explore and will find it interesting. I also hope you have found the President’s 4th message which I wrote for the launch on the website on a drop down from the “Who’s Who” heading. Also on the web are the new pamphlets that are there is be printed for your use. They are on a drop down from “Documents Library”. In conclusion, I have been delighted to receive many positive comments from all around the Inner Wheel World from members who are finding my theme for the year “Be A Friend” good to work towards and which is encouraging members to take our organisation back to its core values. Yes, we need to be moving forward, and we need to move with the times, but we also need to keep our eyes focussed on our original objects. “Rules and traditions can be changed; principles are forever” and I believe that our objects are our principles. Let us all Be A Friend as we continue helping people and extending the hand of friendship as we help to create Happier Futures by helping children around the world now.

Dialogue with IIW President22 March 2013 • One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya

“board dIreCtors” in page 8 of the IIW Constitution

“no country in this group (that is, with fewer than 1,000 members) shall have a person serving as a Board Director for more than two consecutive years, but may nominate a candidate again after an interval of one year.”

Q: How would we know under which group the previous Nominee was elected. It will be unfair if the following year’s nomination is invalid because of this ruling.

A: Currently on the IIW Governing Body, eight of sixteen would qualify under this category. Go ahead and nominate. The two years apply to “country”, and this was passed at the 2009 convention.

About the position and standing of IIW Board Director in the District and Club. As a Board Director is on the International Inner Wheel Governing Body she must not be involved within her own country, must be impartial and not be involved in ‘local’ matters.

aCtIve membershIp, Category C

“Women who have been invited to join, provided that a majority of club members agree.”

Q: Two-thirds majority or simple majority?

A: Simple majority. In India, it is two-thirds because of local bye-laws.

Inner Wheel traInIng

Q: How does IIW view training? What steps has IIW taken with regards to this? At the recent IIW Governing Body Meeting, PIIW President Catherine Refabert emphasised the need to train members at all levels especially E-training. Some of our members see IW more as a social organisation and are just happy with the friendship and service aspects but do not feel the need to be ‘trained’ on IW culture, procedures and knowledge. This is where the District faces its most crucial challenge – getting knowledgeable members to serve so that IW can expand beyond club and district status. We are unable to proceed to form a National Governing Body if members are not interested to hold office. Perhaps you can address this issue to the members tomorrow at the AGM.

A: IIW encourages training. IIW’s aim is to put more training materials on the web. For those under Category C, a mentoring system should be introduced.

soCIal Change

Q: Would President Carole share with us any impactful social change noted during your term of office. Has IIW considered a role to identify charismatic leaders or projects that have shown successful impact for social change at community level as examples to motivate and encourage clubs?

A: Difficult to measure charismatic leadership. In India there are 30,000 members and competition is strong amongst themselves. Their website is very comprehensive and there are a number of worthwhile projects that have been carried out. Other Clubs can learn from this.

Lunch was held at the Raffles Hotel, an establishment built in the early 20th Century. After lunch, President Carole was taken to PIIWBD Shirin’s residence where she was hosted for the duration of the visit. In the evening, she attended the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) Charity Banquet, graced by Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam. The next day, about fifty Inner Wheel members from the three Clubs congregated at the premises of the SAVH for a meeting with IIW President Carole. Reports were presented by the Club Presidents. President Carole was then shown around the premises to see the whole range of services provided by SAVH. She was also given the honour to cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the upgraded facility consisting of new PCs and new Braille-coded machines and printers, donated by IWC of Singapore to SAVH. After lunch, President Carole accompanied by NR Ilah, DC Rokiah, VC Nany and Dr Joanna Sie spent time at the ‘Garden by the Bay’. The attractions included Flower Dome, Supertree Grove, Cloud Forest, Heritage Garden and the famous Bay East Garden. Many photos were taken. In the evening, a dinner was held at a restaurant serving western food. It was a relaxing evening with good fellowship, good food and wine. On the morning of the third day, President Carole visited the National Museum of Singapore, established in 1887 when Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements. Re-opened in December 2006 after three years of extensive restoration, the museum now presents permanent exhibitions on Singapore history and popular culture, using state-of-the-art multimedia technology to bring history to life. After a lunch of seafood with Inner Wheel members, President Carole returned to PIIWBD Shirin’s residence to get ready for her return trip to New Zealand, in the evening of 28 March 2013.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF intan, Kuala luMpur

This “young generation” Club held an Inaugural Meeting on the 29 October 2012 and was registered with the Registrar of Societies in December 2012, with the guidance and support from District Chairman Juanita Lee, Extension Chairman Datin Pearl and mentoring club, Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur. The Club was initiated by President Shin Loh, with the objective of helping to make a difference in people’s lives and also influencing other like-minded ladies to be involved. The club was successfully registered with International Inner Wheel on 22 November 2012, with 16 members aged 25 and above. A year-long of exciting plans include fundraising for a long-term programme with Rumah Solehah and POSHe (Positive Shelter Home), a shelter for women and children living with HIV/AIDS, to provide the children with support to aid their development, to educate peers about HIV, raising the awareness of living with HIV and also promoting the importance of Safe Sex and STDs. At the Charter Installation, a cheque of RM6,000 was presented by District Chairman Juanita Lee on behalf of their mentor club, Inner Wheel Club of Kuala Lumpur. This sum is part of the total proceeds allocated to District 330 from a musical concert “Empress Wu” sponsored by PP Datin Linda Koay.

Sixteen members including spouses attended the 13th Treinnial Conference of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs In India at the Leonia Holistic Destination, Hyderabad, on 1-3 February 2013. It was a wonderful experience. Places that we visited were the Qutub Minar – the tallest minaret in India, Golconda Fort – a ruined city in South Central India built in the 13th century by ‘kakatiya’ kings. Bannerettes were exchanged and many clubs said they would love to visit Penang.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF petaling jaya

The Inner Wheel Club of Petaling Jaya under the leadership of President May Khoo and the Executive Committee undertook some key projects in 2012-2013: Light Syawal Cheer, Deepavali Cheer, Christmas Cheer and the Chinese New Year Cheer. Food hampers, ang pows, provisions and clothes were donated mainly to single mothers and stationeries when there were small children. » A Charity Bazaar was held on the 24-25 November 2012 at the

Community Centre, 1 Utama Shopping Complex. It was a bake and handicraft sale. IIW objectives of bonding true friendship among members and public awareness were achieved. True Friendship was further bonded during the time of baking, preparing and onsite sale. All the proceeds from this sale were channeled to underprivileged children and single mothers in line with the IIW social project theme “Giving Children a Better Future”.

» In conjunction with International Women’s Day, a Hi-tea was held on 9 December 2012 at the PJ Caring Home. Donating adult diapers to the PJ caring home has been an ongoing project.

» Another long-standing project is “Buy a Book to Teach a Child”. Its three main objectives are to help the environment by the recycling of books and magazines, to cultivate a reading habit amongst the public as the price of each book is minimal and often given out free of charge to deserving children and voluntary teachers, and lastly, to collect proceeds which goes towards educating underprivileged children. The proceeds from this sale sponsored tuition fees for 4 secondary students.

» An Appreciation Lunch for single mothers with their children was held on 19 May in celebrating Mother’s Day at Kampung Parit Mahang, near Kuala Selangor. It included motivational talks on Breast Cancer Awareness and nutrition, fitness exercises, basic beauty makeover, and ice breaking games for both moms and kids. 30 single mothers from three major ethnic backgrounds were invited.

Pre-Chinese New Year Dinner at Pantai Restaurant Seri Kembangan. Members were dressed in red and looked radiant. Dinner kick-started with the must-have-CNY Yee Sang. We had a great fellowship and a wonderful time.

The year 2012 saw the passing of the baton of leadership from Past President Thana to President Datin Shamini Nair. The activities of IWC Selangor did not abate under Datin Shamini’s leadership with able guidance from PP Thana. The highlight of 2012 was the premiere of the James Bond film “Skyfall” which was held at Sunway Pyramid on 31 October. It was a fantastic evening, ably supported by Inner Wheel members and Rotarians. The IWCS ladies came out in full force resplendent in red, the theme for that night. We had a healthy sale of tickets and managed to raise RM19,000 which could be used for activities in the coming year. Other notable activities of 2012 included the replenishing of the library at SJK (T) Bangsar. Members rallied when a call for donation of books was made. The library now has a healthy collection of books, which is what a library should be. We also donated a wheelchair to a senior citizen who was desperately in need of assistance in that area. It was a rewarding experience to see the pleasure and gratitude she showed for that unexpected gift. The IWCS remains committed to our theme and slogan “Friendship and Service”. Again members heeded the call of the President to help a family who had lost their home and belongings in a fire. Donations of clothes and provisions were made to the family. Within the club, the ladies continued with the spirit of camaraderie and humour, our monthly meetings were not just productive but also fun. We have new members joining our club in 2012, and we hope to continue in the same vein for this year.

Children’s Day with Special Children

Envision Their Dreams

3 october 2012. It was a very special celebration for all the members of our club. We gathered at Lighthouse School to celebrate Children’s Day with 45 children who are partially visually impaired, some partially hearing impaired and mildly autistic. President Smita raised funds for a memorable Lunch Party for the children. We distributed goodie bags to all the children. They were given “I love Singapore” T-shirts, soft toys, Pringles, two packets of biscuits, Gello, chocolates and Milo. Each child was treated to doughnuts, pizza and drinks. President Smita received a donation of a piano from her friend for these students. The children played the Parachute Game and sang a beautiful “Thank You” song. The celebration was in line with IIW social project campaign “Happier Futures Helping Children Around The World Now”.

27 March 2013. Major charity project for this year is to provide facilities to the visually handicapped children to continue their education beyond Primary School Leaving Examination and compete for the limited vacancies in the Universities. These students depend on Braille transcription services provided by the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH). As Microsoft will cease support for Windows XP in 2013, SAVH will require to revamp the PCs and related peripherals/screen reader software and equipment, required to support the Braille transcription process and embossing, to remain relevant and compliant with its patrons i.e. Ministry of Education and secondary schools under its purview, and other Government and commercial agencies.

SAVH runs a school for visually handicapped, hearing impaired and autistic children. The library requires special videos and audio tapes available only in the US and is also needed to be upgraded to provide facilities to these handicapped students. IWC of Singapore is raising $30,000 (SGD) for SAVH to purchase four units of Focus 40 Blue Braille Display, one flatbed scanner, seven PC units for Braille production and audio-video tapes for their library.

Bring Cheers to Adults withIntellectual Disability

Installation of the 38th President, Lucia Goh

A Christmas Party for clients of the SUN-DAC Day Activity Centre was held on Saturday, 8 December 2012. IWC Singapore West members namely Kim, Caroline, Claudia, Gek, Shirley, Lucy Bay and grandson Lucas, Ping and niece, and Lucia joined the SUN-DAC clients and staff for a morning of song-and-dance. The biggest draw was the buffet which both the clients and their familes enjoyed heartily. SUN-DAC is a charity set up in 1990 to provide care for persons with intellectual disabilities in a day activity centre setting.

Lucia Goh was installed on 23 June 2012 as the 38th President. The simple ceremony was held at the University Club at Kent Ridge. Gracing the occasion was IIW Board member and District ISO Mrs Shirin Ghadiali and President 2012-2013 of IWC Singapore Mrs Smita Gadgil. Also present were IWC Singapore East Past President Rajani and fellow member Nelly Doctor. Master of Ceremonies Dr Kim Ng was eloquent and humorous, and kept us engaged all the time. In addition, she exhibited her own collection of photographs of the past events for the occasion. She even compiled and banded a members' list, President, Secretary and Treasurer's reports and distributed to all those present. As the theme “Memory of Yesteryear” goes, all members turned up in fashions of the sixties and seventies. Paul Sie and Joanna wowed the crowd with their most unusual outfits: he with a leather jacket and dark glasses, topped with a wig that made him look like a rock star; and she in an a-go-go style mini skirt. Eventually, the pair walked away with the top prize of being the best dressed. Another winner was Sophia. At the end of the celebration, Mr Lee, Tommy Lien and Dr Goh bought the floral arrangements personally made and contributed by Vice-President Rose Lien and added $150 dollars to the sunshine box.
