Alterations will include a 2.5m extension to the ramp, plus a 1.3m walkway on each side of the ramp with mooring rings and wooden buffers. A diagram of the planned alterations will be on display at Burrum Traders, and also on the notice board outside the general store (if the notice board is still there!). Burrum Heads ‘Needs’: Fraser Coast Regional Council CEO has arranged to meet with Barry Alexander to discuss our submission. The Association also received messages of support from Councillors Sue Brooks and Barb Hovard. Hall Cleaning: Lesley advised that we now have approximately eighteen volunteers taking care of hall cleaning. Working in groups of 3 or 4, each person will be required to assist for approximately one hour every three or four weeks. This is a great show of community involvement, but we would be happy to see even more sign-on to help. This is not just for the ladies; men are also very welcome to assist. If you can spare an hour once a month please contact Val (41295 765) or Lesley (41295 410). Playground/Exercise Equipment: Cr. Dalgleish advised that a Council inspection has resulted in the decision that there is insufficient room for playground equipment in Lions Park. It seems likely that exercise equipment may be placed there, and that allocations from individual councillors may enable the erection of playground equipment adjacent to the Community Hall. Discussions on possibilities will continue. Next Meeting of the Association will be held on Wednesday 19 August 2009, commencing at 7.00pm sharp, at the Community Hall.

ASSOCIATION NEWS

Our meeting on 15 July was attended by 22 members and 3

visitors, including Councillors Sue Brooks, David

Dalgleish and Les MucKan from Fraser Coast Regional

Council. Apologies were received from 15 members.

Thank you to all who attended, especially as it was State of

Origin night. Your commitment to the Association is

appreciated.

President’s Position: As our Association has been

without a President for two months, we were very pleased

when Ron Gregson accepted the challenge put to him.

Ron explained that other commitments would exclude him

from occasional meetings, but that he firmly believes in the

objects of our Association and will do his best in the role

of President.

Ron’s acceptance of this position means that we now have

a vacancy in the position of Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.

If you feel you can help in this role please contact one of

the Management Committee. We would certainly welcome

your assistance.

Social Bowls Day: This community event, organised by

the Burrum Heads Bluewater Boat Club, and supported by

the Burrum Heads Bowls Club, was an outstanding

success, both socially and financially. The Progress

Association greatly appreciates the efforts of the members

of these clubs, and of the donation of $1000 received

towards the cost of the shelter shed at the tennis courts. I

am sure that many who attended look forward to other

combined social functions. It was a ‘top’ day. Thank you.

Tennis Courts: Once again Ergon have advised of

another delay in the connection of power. We are now

hoping for lighting in August. We also expect that the

shelter shed will be erected in late July. Elsewhere in this

newsletter is a call for interested people to form a Social

Tennis Group. If you are considering ‘getting into tennis’

this is just the way to do it.

Illegal Campers: Barry Alexander has met with Andrew

Gaze (FCRC) for discussion regarding this issue. Council

has ordered five new signs – for Burrum Heads locations -

advising of fines for illegal camping, and also a large sign

at the entrance to town. They are now looking at ways in

which these rules can be policed.

Boat Ramp: George Dart advised that the Land

Management Plan was completed on 19 July and has now

been passed to the Dept. of Environment and Resource

Management. At present the report is ‘confidential’ and

cannot be released to the public. George has had

discussion with Chris Foley MP, and has been assured of

his support and assistance within Parliament on this issue.

George also advised that tenders are to be called next week

for improvements to the Burrum Heads Road boat ramp.

Alterations will include a 2.5m extension to the ramp, plus

a 1.3m walkway on each side of the ramp with mooring

rings and wooden buffers. A diagram of the planned

alterations will be on display at Burrum Traders, and also

on the notice board outside the general store (if the notice

board is still there!).

Burrum Heads ‘Needs’: Fraser Coast Regional Council

CEO has arranged to meet with Barry Alexander to discuss

our submission. The Association also received messages of

support from Councillors Sue Brooks and Barb Hovard.

Hall Cleaning: Lesley advised that we now have

approximately eighteen volunteers taking care of hall

cleaning. Working in groups of 3 or 4, each person will be

required to assist for approximately one hour every three

or four weeks. This is a great show of community

involvement, but we would be happy to see even more

sign-on to help. This is not just for the ladies; men are also

very welcome to assist. If you can spare an hour once a

month please contact Val (41295 765) or Lesley (41295

410).

Playground/Exercise Equipment: Cr. Dalgleish advised

that a Council inspection has resulted in the decision that

there is insufficient room for playground equipment in

Lions Park. It seems likely that exercise equipment may be

placed there, and that allocations from individual

councillors may enable the erection of playground

equipment adjacent to the Community Hall. Discussions

on possibilities will continue.

Next Meeting of the Association will be held on

Wednesday 19 August 2009, commencing at

7.00pm sharp, at the Community Hall.

HISTORY OF TRAVISTON (BURRUM HEADS)

At the June General Meeting of the BHPA, Joyce Watson spoke of her proposal to gather information

relating to the history of our district.

Joyce is keen to see a collection of photographs, literature, letters, and memories of some of the older

members of the district of the Burrum River and surrounds. The information so gathered could be

collated and used in several ways, e.g. in book form or as a display in the Community Hall at Burrum

Heads, or as an installation where residents and visitors could learn about the origin of Traviston (now

known as Burrum Heads).

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a possible source of funding to collect and collate this

information. Funding from various Arts bodies could be the source of monies to take a step further and

build an installation in a form to be decided by the community, under the guidance of a committee

formed from Progress Association and other interested parties.

At this stage we are simply asking everyone to

search through their own family archives, and to

gather as much information as possible to launch

this project. Further information relating to the

‘gathering’ will be advised in the near future.

More than half the year has already disappeared.

No wonder we are feeling older.

The nights are cooler but the days are lovely and

don’t feel like winter.

Monday Crafts are going well with quite a few

visitors from the south.

Crafts: The Free Form Knitting and Crochet Bags

are taking shape – each is personally designed and

is very impressive. Thank you to Heather.

August project will be Silk Ribbon Embroidery.

This will be taught by Joan I Simpson.

Party preparations are well underway with

everybody bringing two craft projects for our

display. This year’s theme is ‘something from the

fifties’ so it should be a

very interesting show.

Come and join the craft

group on Monday

mornings.

Everyone welcome.

The pelicans are returning, and the stingrays have

disappeared. We know where the pelicans go, but

where do the stingrays go in winter? We need to know

as we will soon be sporting our new teal green club

shirts, featuring a stingray emblem. The juniors have

voted to have "Burrum Bullrays" emblazoned on their

shirts for regatta purposes.

Social Paddle with Fraser Coast Outriggers: - 9th

August. We will be hosting the annual social paddle

with Fraser Coast Outriggers followed by a BBQ lunch

at Lions Park. We plan to paddle up the Gregory or to

Toogoom and back depending on weather. High tide is

10.14am. Start Time 8.30am

Ours is a small club, but we are affiliated with a

national body, AOCRA, for constitutional, insurance

and racing purposes. We hold a ten year lease over our

compound at Lions Park and we believe that we have

one of the best paddling venues in Australia. We

paddle mainly for fitness and the love of being out on

the water, but are able to cater for those who wish to

compete in regattas. Anyone wishing to come and try

outrigging may do so on Sundays at 8am. Call

41295635 or 41295226 for more information.

Junior Outriggers:- Saturdays 8.30am. Sundays 9.30am

(No Juniors 25th/26th July and 9th August). New

Juniors, (over 10yrs, under 19yrs) are allowed 3 free

paddles. Contact Julie Bray 41295711 for more

information.

Julie has had the Juniors practising turns and change

overs (jumping in and out of moving canoes) in the

OC6's and getting paddle time in the OC1's leading up

to the "Spirit of Aloha " REGATTA at Awoonga Dam.

This event will be hosted by Canoe Point Outriggers on

25th and 26th July. Canoes will be provided by

AOCRA and Canoe point outriggers. We are all looking

forward to the weekend camp at Tannum Sands and the

friendly competition. If points are given for enthusiasm

our juniors should all win gold. They will be competing

in OC1 and OC6 races including changeover and

obstacle courses. Adults will do the obstacle portion of

the race (I think I'm busy lighting the BBQ when that

one is on) Good Luck to our juniors, and have fun.

FRIENDSHIP GROUP NEWS

The July meeting of the Burrum Heads Friendship

Group was held on Thursday 2ndJuly. Celie, Lea

and Terry provided our goodies for afternoon tea

as well as the raffle prize. We enjoyed a tasty

smoko and Anita was the lucky winner of the

day’s raffle.

Lea entertained the group with a couple of games

to “get our minds ticking over”! Also, thank you

to Lea for providing the game prizes.

Lyn has been able to secure the services of two

guest speakers for our August meeting -

Dani Runnalls and Ian Dawe. Dani is the

Manager of Fraser Coast and Wide Bay Carer

Services and Ian is a representative of Home

Assist. Both speakers will address the ladies on

how they can provide assistance and who is

eligible for such assistance. They will also be

available to answer any questions that we may

have.

This get together is open to anybody who may have

any concerns in either of these areas. Everybody

who is interested is most welcome. We do ask,

however, that those intending to attend to hear

these speakers phone Eadith on 4129 5516 to

assist with catering numbers.

The next get-together will be held on Thursday

6thAugust at 2.30pm in the Burrum Heads

Community Hall. Lyn McC and Barb are our

volunteer caterers and raffle donors for the

afternoon.

Admission is $4.50 to cover cost of the afternoon

tea and the hall hire.

For more information, phone Lyn on 41216063.

Favourable weather late in June allowed us to

catch up on postponed charters. Both the Venus 11

out of Bundaberg and the Coastwide Tin Can Bay

had similar catches of predominately smaller

species of fish, hussar, parrot, sweetlip, with just a

few quality fish mixed in. John Zilches topped the

Coastwide catch with a 6.2kg red emperor...nice

fish John. On the Venus11 John Cramb got us off

to a flying start with several large blackall before

anyone else had a bite. Daryl Coombes landed his

first snapper...a 6.1kg "Nobby"..Well done Daryl.

Ron Underwood landed a 5.8kg spangled

emperor, and had the best "one that got away"

story. He fought a good half hour to tire out and

raise what must have been a huge cod or groper,

only to have it go under the boat and break off

when almost to the surface...Bad luck Ron, after

such a good fight we would have liked to have

seen him. I was fortunate to land a 9.25kg red

emperor,a 4kg spangled emperor,a 3.25kg red

throat, and a 2.2kg coral trout... luck happens !!

I hear that Burrum River has been fishing well

with good catches of flathead, flounder, and bream

being recorded. The rock wall from Lions Park to

the caravan park has produced good flathead, and

quality bream have been taken near the boat ramps

at night.

Bill Cardiff reported on details of planned

improvements and extension to the Burrum Heads

Rd boat ramp. There will be no second lane, but

side platforms will be built for safer handling of

boats being launched and retrieved...the ramp will

be extended further into the low tide zone, and

stainless rings will be attached to the side

platforms.

We had a good roll up for our community fund

raising bowls day on Sunday 12th, and all who

attended enjoyed the perfect weather, fun bowling,

and community fellowship. I take this opportunity

to thank :-Clive and Des and the Bowls Club

management and members for providing the greens,

bowls, guidance, club faculties...and donating

green fees to the cause; I thank the many Burrum

Heads businesses for their generous donations of

prizes for our raffles. Thanks to our club members

for their support and contribution of prizes, to

George for compering the day, Leslie for taking

entries, Paul for organising..And cooking the Best

BBQ lunch..Crackerjacks for morning tea

refreshments, and special thanks to Denise for

organising and coordinating raffles, tickets, and

prizes and everything else necessary to make it

happen...We appreciate the time and effort that you

put into making this such a successful day...Finally

thanks to the Burrum community for supporting us

in raising close to $1000 for the tennis court

shelter.

Until next month Peter McKenzie

Well, Christmas is now over and Santa & Mrs Claus are back in the North Pole again until December.

Our annual fund raiser – Christmas in July was a grand success once again with everyone enjoying a

wonderful meal, lots of laughter, good friendship, prizes and great music. It is so nice to see such a

strong community spirit.

Talking of community spirit, the Local Ambulance Committee (based in Howard) is meeting for it’s

AGM on Thursday the 6th of August at 7pm at the ambulance station in Thomas Street, Howard and is

looking for volunteers. They meet every second month and have 3 fund raising activities a year – 2

bowls days (one in Torbanlea and one in Burrum) and one golf day (in Howard). If you can spare a

few hours every second month, why not come along and see if you can be of assistance.

An update of the news on our much needed shed – We have now employed the services of Dick Fogg

to assist us with our negotiations with the Fraser Coast Regional Council. We have our grant of

$50,000, we are very close to having $40,000 from our fund raising efforts and now if we can get the

Council to kick in another $50,000 we are in the running for our much needed new facility. Fingers

crossed.

Remember, now is the time to be looking at your gardens, trees & gutters for the next storm season.

If you would like to become an SES member, just talk to Darryl at Burrum Traders or Rhonda at

Burrum River Realty. We are always looking for new members.

SES NEWS

For fire permits, phone Eric Rosenberger Ph 4129 5928

Late one Sunday afternoon last month as I was

settling in to watch the second half of the

footy, a phone call came in from the Duty Officer at

EMQ's communications centre at Kawana on the

Sunshine Coast. He was concerned that two

Burrum Heads appliances (each with a crew of

three) had been deployed early that morning but

had not sent an arrival call or any sit-rep

transmissions all day. Nor had they called in with a

'return to base' message. He said he would get back

to me.

How could this be I wondered? I knew our first and

second Officers were taking some much overdue

time off the on-call register and I was about to do a

ring-around of the rest of our on-call

members when Firecom got back to me. To my

great relief it turned out that an error had been

made that morning when a Firecom operator had

'heard' and typed in Burrum Heads instead of

Burnett Heads. I've requested a transcript of

the transmissions and responses that day

between the two Burnett Heads crews and Firecom.

To end on a more positive note, all the State's

frontline RFB vehicles are currently being fitted

with satellite positioning beacons by which

Firecom will be able to locate any vehicle in the

entire fleet with a touch of a computer key or two.

I guess that means we can't go beach fishing in

them any more.

Stay safe.

The Howard & District Local Ambulance Committee will be holding their

BIENNIAL GENERAL MEETING on Thursday the 6th August 2009

at the Howard Ambulance Station, Thomas Street Howard at 7pm.

ALL POSITIONS WILL BE VACANT.

Come along and get involved and learn about Ambulance Services and why this committee exists.

Local Ambulance Committees consist of members of the community who take an active interest in

emergency medical services and play a vital role in providing feedback to QAS regarding provision and

enhancement of emergency service delivery.

We have had fantastic support over the past 5 years since the committee was formed to coincide with the

opening of Howard Ambulance Station.

Many organizations and citizens in the area have donated and held functions to support the committee in its

endeavours to purchase equipment for the paramedics to use and we thank you all. All monies raised in

this area stays in the area.

The Paramedics at Howard Ambulance are dedicated officers who strive to give the best possible care to

patients requiring their assistance

The first competition of

our new fishing year was

held on the weekend of

19 – 21 June. Colleen

Tarnawsky took out the

Ladies best bag and

John Keam the Men’s best bag. The secret weight

species were: Trumpeter, won by Zorro Tarnawsky

and Tailor, won by Graham Stretton. The lucky

draw of members weighing in a fish was won by

Ron Henderson and the Lucky Virgin draw by Ron

Underwoood.

The competition of 10 - 12 July resulted in a very

poor weigh-in with a combination of strong wind,

members away on trips and boat problems for

some, affecting the quantity of fish weighed in.

However, husband and wife team Don and Beryl

McNeil managed some good fish to win the Men’s

and Ladies heaviest bags. The secret weight species

were Flathead, won by Graham Stretton, and Pike

won by Ken Frainey. The lucky draw of members

weighing in a fish was won Rosemary Davey.

If you have been thinking about joining but haven’t

got around to it yet now is a good time, as the

competitions for the new fishing year have only

recently commenced. We would love to see some

more juniors in our club so how about all those

Mums and Dads out there joining up with their

kids. Membership is $20 for adults, $7.50 for

Juniors, or $40 per family.

If you are interested in finding out more about us

you are welcome to come along to our weigh-in at

the Lions Park at 4:30pm every third Sunday. The

next one will be held on the 2 August.

THE STATION

Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision.

We see ourselves on a long trip that spans the

Country. We are travelling by train.

Out of the windows we drink in the passing scene of

cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a

crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of

row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and

valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city

skylines and village halls.

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination.

On a certain day at a certain hour we will pull into

the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving.

Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will

come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together

like a completed jigsaw puzzle.

How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the

minutes for loitering, - waiting, waiting, waiting for

the station. When we reach the station, "that will be

it!" we cry.

"When I'm 18", "When I buy a new car", "when I put

my last child through college", "when I have paid off

the mortgage", "when I get a promotion", "when I

reach the age of retirement I will live happily ever

after".

But sooner or later we must realize that there is no

station in life, no one place to arrive at once and for

all. The true joy of life is the journey. The station is

only a dream. It constantly out distances us.

It is not the burdens of life that drive us mad. It is the

regrets of yesterday, and the fear of tomorrow. Regret

and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.

So, stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles.

Instead, climb more mountains, swim more rivers, go

barefoot more often, watch more sunsets, eat more

ice cream, laugh more and cry less.

Life must be lived as we go along.

The station will be here soon enough.

CLUB NEWSBoth of our Men's Pennants teams are doing well and

we are looking forward to some more good games.
