One chapter closes; another opens
St Thomas à Becket Catholic Secondary School, Wakefield
I’m sure that most parents would agree that ‘time flies’ but never more so than in the case of one’s school days. Despite the children feeling that the five years they spend at secondary school drags whilst there, all leavers agree that it passes in the blink of an eye. This is always a topic of conversation at the annual school ‘Prom’. Parents and students alike can remember their first day at Beckets; who they spoke to, who they sat next to etc. Poignantly, this year, the date of the Prom coincided with the first of our two Year Six Transition days. We have been having two days for the last three years and, as a result, we really see how quickly the boys and girls settle in when they arrive fully uniformed and equipped in September. For the first time this year we held a Year Five Taster Day with every child from our four Catholic feeder schools taking part in a frenetic mix of Art, Drama, science, PE, technology, Languages and music. We know that the children really enjoyed both days being guided by former pupils of their respective primaries. The chicken burgers, goujons and curly fries went down particularly well! This issue focuses on the new faces who will be writing the next chapter in the life of our school and, in time, their names in the Becket’s Hall of Fame. John Rooney

“This is an INCLUSIVE school with a CARING ETHOS”
OFSTED May 2014
As they take their first steps on their journey away from childhood, may our young people be blessed with abundant hope and imagination, integrity and courage, love and joy.
May they remember that joy can be found in their connection to others, that integrity grows with every choice to be true to themselves, that courage means to be of large heart.
May we ever appreciate and learn from their energy and wisdom, delight in the unique people they are and support their growing into whom they will become.
May the time and care we give through the years which start tonight bless the path that they will walk.
Amen
