Principal’s News

NEW CLASS STRUCTURE On Monday (17th) we commenced working with our new class structure. As you were previously informed this was caused by the need for us to align our class numbers with Department of Education (DoE) class size limits. It was also cause by the uneven spread of our student numbers across the different year levels.

Thank you sincerely for your cooperation and patience with this process. All students have now spent a day in their new classrooms and appear settled.

A full list of our classes is as follows: Prep E – Mrs Elson Prep J – Mrs Job 1B – Mrs Baldwin 1M – Mrs Muldoon 1/2K – Mrs Pearson 2O – Mrs O’Keeffe 2/3F – Mrs Fetzer 3B – Mrs Barnes 3/4A – Miss Alderson 4T – Mrs Toby 4W – Mrs Wyland 4/5L – Mrs Lancaster 5C – Mrs Cox 5F – Mr Fallon 6S – Mr Spyve 6W – Mrs Warcon

STUDENT LEADERS

It gave me great pleasure last Friday (14th Feb) morning to name our 2020 student leaders: They are:

SCHOOL CAPTAINS Stephanie Taylor Luke Johns

SPORTS HOUSE CAPTAINS Cook – Connor Robinson Flinders – Hayley Burnell Oxley – Alkirah Smith-Sauer Phillip – Isaac Dahler

SENIOR LEADERS Serien Tremaine Croft James

Congratulations to all these students. Your position is just reward for the manner in which you engage in your education and display yourself within the school.

PREP PHOTOS FOR BULLETIN The Morning Bulletin will be at Allenstown on Thursday morning. They will take photos of the Prep students for their annual Prep student edition.

Please note: only students with media permission will have their photos taken and name recorded. We will advise you when the photos are to be published.

WEATHER CAUSING

SOME PLAY CHANGES The wet weather that we have been experiencing has meant that not all our normal play spaces are available to students.

The oval and junior playground have had to be closed regularly due to the bogginess and danger of injury.

We hope to return to normal play conditions soon (although the rain has been very welcome too).

In the meantime students have been directed to some undercover areas during their breaks. This still allows they some play options and the chance to ‘get some air in their lungs’ after being in classrooms.

BEHAVIOUR CONCERNS

It saddens (and frustrates) me to have to tell you that after only fourteen school days we have had five students suspended from school.

All of these suspensions have been as a consequence of physical violence against other students.

I wish to make the message loud and clear – students who deliberately injure others will be dealt with using the strongest measures possible.

I strongly believe that we do an effective job at Allenstown School of teaching students the appropriate way to behave.

However, some students have poor impulse control and make poor choices in their reactions.

Please talk with your child about their school behaviour. I am determined that students should feel safe from violence and bullying when they are inside our fences.

REMINDERS

JOLLY GRAMMAR BOOKS Year 1 Jolly Grammar Books have arrived at the school office and are available for purchase for $9.95

Year 2 books are yet to arrive, admin will update via the newsletter and facebook once they are available.

SCHOOL HOURS are 8.45am to 2.45pm Students should be at school by 8.35am

Morning Session 8.45am to 10.45am First Lunch 10.45am to 11.30am Middle Session 11.30am to 1.00pm Second Lunch 1.00pm to 1.30pm Afternoon Session 1.30pm to 2.45pm

OFFICE HOURS 8.15am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday (Closed Public Holidays and School Holidays)

ABSENCES The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities of Education Queensland. Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and parents/carers need to know if their child hasn’t turned up for school.

This is why we will continue to send our daily SMS texts to families who have children away on an unexplained absence. Please advise the school by one of the contacts listed below, when your child is not at school.

Reply to the SMS message sent by school

Report the absence on the QParents app

Phone the office as soon as possible (A message can be left at any time)

Parents/Carers of children who have unexplained absences will be contacted by the school to provide an explanation.

LATE ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL If students arrive late to school they are required to come to the office before heading to the classroom to register the absence and receive a Late Arrival slip which will update the class roll. EARLY COLLECTION FROM SCHOOL From time to time a student may need to be collected early from school for an appointment or due to illness, so please ensure an authorised adult (on your Emergency Contact list) comes to the office to collect them and arrange to have the student signed out. Students will not be sent out to a vehicle on the street for their own safety.

Please refrain from collecting students early from school unless pre-arranged. Encourage your student to attend school for the entire day to ensure they get the most out of their day’s learning at Allies.

Any time missed at school makes a difference to their learning over time. From an early age, if children are taught that they need to “show up” for school and make a commitment, this positive mentality aids academic and career success and brings benefits in adulthood. Please invest in your child’s future and ensure they attend school all day – every day!!

MESSAGES Most days the office is inundated with phone calls to pass on messages to students. Please ensure you discuss school pick up details with your child each day to avoid confusion for the student.

Many students come to the office unsure of who is collecting them and where to wait. If a student has not been collected by 3.00pm they will be directed to the office to wait so there is no need to phone to advise you will be a few minutes late. Students are supervised outside the office until 3.15pm.

The office makes every attempt to pass on urgent messages to students, but trying to pass on numerous messages to lots of students in a very short time is sometimes near impossible and we can’t guarantee the student will respond to the message. At times the messages are very detailed and confusing for both staff and students. If there is an urgent change to school pick up details, a message will be sent over the loud speaker just before the end of the school day for ALL students with messages to come to the office. Messages will then be distributed. Calling classrooms is very time consuming as well as a huge disruption to learning time.

CHANGE OF CLOTHES Please ensure your child has a change of clothes and underwear in their school bag each day in case of toileting accidents.

SCHOOL MEDICATION If your child needs to take medication (e.g. Tablets, Ventolin Puffer etc.) at school, parents are required to complete a Medication Form before staff are permitted to administer the medication to the student.

Parents/caregivers of students who require ongoing medication for 2020 will need to complete a new medication form for this year. This includes Epipens and Asthma Puffers (even if the student has the puffer in their bag or classroom and can administer the puffer themselves). The school needs to be aware of what medication is on school grounds.

If a new form is not completed for 2020 then staff are not permitted to administer any medication without this updated information. Forms are available from the office.

Instructions for administering medication MUST be written on the medication container provided by the pharmacist at the doctor’s request. The instructions on the medication container MUST indicate the dosage and frequency that it is to be administered.

NEWSLETTER The school newsletter is available on the Allenstown State School Facebook page and website each week. Paper copies are available from the office.

FACEBOOK We also use our school Facebook page regularly to keep our school community informed of a wide range of information. If you have not yet done so, look us up on Facebook and make sure that you have our news as quickly as it is put up.

LOST PROPERTY Please ensure all your child’s belongings are clearly named. Many of these items go missing during the school day and quite a few are left behind in the eating areas. If each item is named, it makes it much easier to find its owner. Lost Property is located downstairs in A Block.

SCHOOL BANKING Students participating in Commbank Dollamites School banking is Thursday.

LOST GLASSES A pair of children’s were lost last year from grade 1. They are blue and were in a green case. If found please have them handed into the office.

LOST SCOOTER On Friday 7th February a purple ‘jump pro’ scooter has gone missing from the bike rack. It has the students name engraved on it.
