YANASE DENTAL GROUP WINTER 2012 PAGE 1 Newsletter Three Generations of Dental Excellence A Newsletter for the Patients of The Yanase Dental Group A tradition is a ritual, belief, or object passed down within a society still maintained in the present, with origins in the past. It is passed down from generation to generation, from the eldest to the youngest. Traditions are legacies that preserve the greatness and integrity of the past and ensure that they have a place in the present and future. The Yanase Dental Group was developed as a result of decades of integrity-driven, patient-centered comprehensive dental care in a professional environment. Dr. Stanley H. Yanase moved to Torrance in 1958 after practicing in Waipahu, Oahu, for 20 years. In Waipahu, he was the only dentist for a wide rural district, just a stone’s throw from the famed Pearl Harbor. In 1969, Dr. Stan’s son, Dr. Roy T. Yanase, graduated from The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and began practicing with Dr. Stan at their new oce, which is our current location, in Torrance. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Roy returned to USC to pursue additional training in advanced prosthetic dentistry. In 1977, Dr. Roy completed his Advanced Prosthodontic certificate program, set up a satellite practice in Orange County, and rejoined the practice in Torrance. Dr. Stan retired after a rewarding 55 years in dentistry in January of 1993. In 2002, Dr. Roy’s son, Dr. Rex R. Yanase, graduated from the The Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and began practicing at the Torrance oce while completing a General Practice Residency at the Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, which is part of the VA (Veteran Aairs) Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. In 2009, with the addition of the Corporations of Dr. Roy, Dr. Rex, Associate Dr. Hamilton H. Le, and a team of 9 dental hygienists, the newly formed Yanase Dental Group is now entering the 6th decade of a family legacy, committed to the profession of dentistry and the preservation of oral health of patients we serve. mia DRY MOUTH

What puts

you at risk?

Common Causes Of Xerostomia

MedicationsHundreds of medications, including some over-the-counter drugs, produce dry mouth as a side effect. Among the more likely types to cause problems are antihistamines, decongestants, high blood pressure medications, and muscle relaxants.

Cancer Therapy Chemotherapy can change the nature and amount of saliva. Radiation to your head and neck can damage salivary glands, causing a marked decrease in salivary flow.

AgingGetting older isn’t a risk factor for dry mouth on its own, however, older people are more likely to be taking medications that may cause dry mouth. Also, older people are more likely to have other health conditions that may cause dry mouth.

Other health conditionsDry mouth can be a consequence of certain health conditions — or their treatments — including the autoimmune disease Sjogren's syndrome, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, HIV/AIDS, and anxiety disorders.

The absence of saliva can open the way for a dramatic rise in the number of cavities, as the protective effect of saliva's ability to remineralize enamel is no longer present, and can make the mucosa and periodontal tissue of the mouth more vulnerable to infection.

If you feel you may be at risk for dry mouth we encourage you to call our practice and schedule a consultation, to discuss the many options for dealing with this condition.
